They didn't mix up the names. Maelstrom shield was originally put into the game as a plain shield, and only later was it changed to count as a part of the permafrost set(and IIRC also one another set) to increase it's value, since it was a bit underwhelming compared to the other maelstrom legendary items.

That's irrelevant... read my post above again.... I didn't come down on either side of the weapon/armor debate or disagree with your post!

There are items on both sides that people are using to support their case whether its a weapon or armor... I'm not in either camp.... I'm agreeing with Turelus that the debate on how you classify a shield is basically irrelevant.... just a case of wording in patch notes, and because the only way to acquire these in game is via vMA they are not going to simply remove it.

You're arguing over the wrong thing.

Weapon or Armor isn't going to achieve what the OP wants.... for them to be removed from the weekly rewards.

Hmmm, isn't the real issue here that the shield is just useless (or at the very least nothing special)? I mean, ofcourse it can come from weekly since it's part of the Maelstrom items.

the shield is even more terrible given that the tri-enchant includes health and that such encahnts (and set boni) lead to a not-full health pool upon weapon swap (even if the other side has the enchant/setbonus, too).

A lot of the items are pretty useless tbh.....

But you hit the nail on the head... of course it will come from the weekly as its one of only two ways to acquire Maelstrom Items.

If there were more ways to get it then perhaps...

But again, how likely is it that they will introduce more methods to get Maelstrom weapons... they are meant to be rare and hard to get, and the very name suggests Arena!

ZOS nerfed the shield back in May of 2014 because at one time it caused as much damage as a weapon. ZOS's position at that time is that a SHIELD was to be used for defense to block!

None of our points matter anyway it is ZOS that gets to make that final decision.

What makes a Maelstrom weapon a Maelstrom weapon? I'd wager it's the unique enchantment. The Maelstrom's Shield enchantment isn't unique. It's craftable and can be applied to any piece of armor. The Maelstrom's Shield deserves a better enchantment and shouldn't be considered as part of the Permafrost set. None of the other Maelstrom items identify with inferior sets. With the exception of The Maelstrom's Shield, they are all distinct and stand alone.

ZOS, how about we give The Maelstrom's Shield some love? Either that or give it a more accurate name, and remove it from the weeklies. It's a glorified Permafrost shield. Nothing more.

Just my two cents.

And I kinda get the feeling, that weekly rewards are global. Seems like most people received the shield today and last week, me and my friend both received a Winterborn ring. Could be a coincidence though

They meant Maelstrom items, they sent Maelstrom items. Some of them suck big time, that's all... I got 3 defending weapons in a row

@Ruben - I don't like the Elemental Succession Robust Necklace, or the Maelstrom Lightening staff I received, so what. It is not about that.

Waiting on ZOS to confirm if the patch notes just worded incorrectly and should say Maelstrom Items, 100% chance Weapon or Shield, or that it is a mistake and I should have received a weapon.

I asked customer service and they told me that I just had bad luck. I replied back to the email and they have yet to send me another response. So I brought it to the forums so that Gina, Rich, ZOS Whoever can confirm.

And where is the weekly golden jewellry...? Oh wait, they removed it without telling the playerbase prior that it was limited time only... and now those who run VMSA regularly will have everything they need by christmas, even with rng messing them over with poor drops like this shield! Check out here if you want to get the dev's to change this.

This is indeed sad. I'm happy I could at least get one Magicka Winterborn ring in gold.

They should definately make it so, that the weekly reward offers a maelstrom weapon and one random jewelry. This is not too much to ask for.

U did vma, u got some gold gear, and even though shield s inbetween weapon/armor category, so thats arguably considered a weapon, they probably misspoke and meant gear instead of weapon

As I said before, the shield should not count as a Maelstrom item. All Master/Maelstrom items aside from this crap shield have an ability altering enchantment, that is how they are defined. If the enchantment boosted a skill, or buffed the sword enchant or something, it would be an entirely different story, but the current enchant is craft-able and in most cases not even ideal.

I think all Maelstrom shields should be retroactively buffed with a better enchant, something that fits the idea of a Maelstrom item, not some cheap set item cop-out.

In game I go to the question mark as if putting in a bug report. Instead I use customer service issue. I will warn you. I was questioning the shield not being a Weapon and the official response I received from customer service was... "If you are continually getting the wrong type of loot, you may be having bad luck. But fear not! Your chances could turn around, so keep trying."

I don't understand why people are arguing about the "armor vs. weapon" thing, when the REAL problem is that the so-called "Maelstrom Shield" is really just a Permafrost set piece in disguise!

Why isn't there a true Maelstrom Shield with a unique 1 piece bonus like the other Maelstrom gear?

It doesn't really matter if I get a golden weapon from the mail or a purple one from the chest. If it's the right weapon with the right trait, I gladly buy 8 tempering things. But I can only get purple jewelry and need to live with it.

I rather get golden jewelry from the mails than golden weapons.
