Average age of console players

According to the ESA the average age of console players is 30.http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/726494/the-average-age-of-a-gamer-is-30-says-esa/

Virtually every day I see console players referred to as 'kiddies' and other degenerative terms. Maybe it's time those who used such terms called a halt.

Stereotypes are seldom helpful, meaningful or accurate. For too many years to remember, I've heard ill-informed stereotypes from non-gamers; all gamers are nerds, games are for kids, gamers are virgins... now I have to read similar stereotypes from 'fellow gamers', who once again match the certainty of their claims with a complete lack of evidence.

Whilst I don't expect the average person who's happy to mudsling with no basis at all, I'm pretty sure that amongst them there are people who will actually examine not just the evidence, but their own attitudes, and maybe think again before flinging out the usual prejudicial and baseless name calling.

The main guild that I run with on XB1 runs the spectrum age wise. Plenty of folks from 20s - 60s. I would suspect it would average out to close to 30ish.

My friends list on Xbox is ranged from mid twenties to low sixties, the average of us about in the middle of that. It is really the same age range when I am on the computer too. Look at it this way you hear annoying kids and music all day on console because the chat is built in and wide open if you do not turn it off. The same kind of people are on PC but you cannot hear the noise through a chat box.

If that's true then I'm far too old to play games.

That's sad. 35 years of love and now I've aged out.

Maybe I should take up knitting again?

It's not that the average age of console players is lower...

It's that, due to the voice chat, the average age of the players you notice is much lower.

What you have to remember is that the group often using this terminology is also the one that took the negative connotation of being referred to as the "glorious PC gaming master race" and thought of it as a good thing (PC master race) regardless of is intended connection to the intolerant attitude of the NSDAP.

Yep. Area chat is a bit of a cesspool in the larger cities. So long as you have a good guild, you can stay in guild chat with reasonable people.

You know you can lie on those surveys?

Most kids want to look mature and cool so they lie their age so people won't treat them poorly.

Dismissing anyone whose behaviour you disapprove of by assuming they're simply too young to know better, and reacting to them based on that accusation, is actually a very common tactic in arguments. And it's even more common online because it's so much easier to make it seem justified when you (and everyone else involved) can't tell how old the people in question actually are.

The funny thing is I know from experience it's often completely inaccurate. I've moderated forums where members had to include their date of birth to sign up, so I knew exactly how old they were and some of the most immature were old enough to be parents, or even grandparents, of teenagers.

But even when the members knew that it still didn't stop the presumed age of the other posters being used as an insult.

(I could get into why it's so frequently used, and frequently effective, but I'd be here all day and I doubt anyone cares.)

Of course because all the younger kids are playing Call Of Duty or GTA and if they don't that means they got really good parents that don't want their brains waste on killing people on a video game. Mature Audience is ok because they understand its a game and its not worth getting grounded over.

    I'd care :)

I find the whole 'why people do the things people do' thing endlessly interesting :)

I'd say some of it is linked to a seemingly inate (in some people) need to be, or at least feel, superior, although a decent chunk of it could just be learned/emulated behaviour.

There is a psychological model called Transactional Analysis, which looks at every component of communication, and the ego-state of the person communicating at that time. Very briefly, often when people communicat there are two layers, the social message (what was said) and the psychological message (what was meant). Invariably when people use stereotypes, it's not just down to laziness or a convenient shortcut, but there is a pejoritive component; Put down group x and raise group y, thusly inflating the self esteem of the one doing the put down.

It's seen in school bullies, in bigots, racists and plenty of other socially inadequate groups.

People think that by calling someone else by a pejoritive put down it makes them look better, this is obviously rarely the case.

Another interesting aspect may be that of emulation as mentioned above, whether emeulation of role models, influencing peers, it's been well researched that people who've been bullied/abused have a proportionately higher chance of going on to be a bully/abuser themselves, maybe similar psychological processes are at play, and the group of gamers fed up with being stereotyped by society at large, unable to retort to that society, find a smaller sub-group to pick on instead.

But what would I know, I play on console, I'm just a kiddie.

As I stated in the other thread whether you are a "kid" or not is dependant on behavior. Sadly, due to this there are many "kids" not just on console but on PC too. This rather childish behavior is everywhere, unfortunately. That being said, stereotypers are also rampant, and even knowing the facts will not stop them from lashing out.

That's a pretty narrow margin there. Do you mostly have the same playstyle and goals and run together regularly?

    Just wondering.

No that's just the bell shape curve of the age of our players. There are a couple in their early 20s, but there's also a couple of our members in their 40s but I would consider them outliers.

I'm 21 and can honestly say I feel like a baby in ESO. Whenever I hear voice chat, I hear these deep husky voices that are quite intimidating if I'm honest! (Xbox One)

I don't know where people are getting the idea that console players are childish and young, especially when it comes to ESO? This game is FAR too complicated for younger people. A few of my friends have tried to play this game and have struggled. MMORPGs aren't exactly a walk in the park.. (Unless you're experienced in them like me! Which is why they now all come to me for help... :P )

Now if you go on CoD on the other hand... just turn voice chat on mute. I stopped playing CoD after Ghosts because I value my ear drums.

At 54 I find a controller actually much more intuitive than a keyboard, even tho I had years of using K/M.

I never have to look at a controller, just use it, but with K/M I spend as much time looking at my keys as I do the screen :)

It's the single main reason I made the switch to xbox 1 ESO play. Though, now knowing just how bad voice chat only is, and that PC now has controller support I'd give someone else's arm and a leg to be able to copy my account back to PC. :(
