Define a MMO

To me it means Mulit Player Online. So why are most of you surprised when they add stuff to the game that requires a group of people to do. This is a MMO people not a single player game. I want a MMO to have a challenge and kick my butt some times. I guess I'm old school MMO player here that came from Everquest.

So play ESO if you like groups with some solo stuff, or play a single player rpg if your all about just soloing.

It is how you say and always has been. Unfortunately we live in a time where no one wants to group or be social and help each other out. They want to research and copy the best build that someone else has mastered, and faceroll all content. Ironically these same folks will then label the game "too easy, "and move on to the next. When group content or challenge is presented, they gnash their teeth and bemoan that everything is too hard and should be easily solo'd.

No, I don't... but it would feel strangely empty if the extras in my life story weren't wandering around ;)

    MMO=Massively Multiplayer Online
Basically a game where there a tons of people--well--online. Basically a game with a player population besides just you.

Naturally they tend to develop trends toward socialization, teamwork and the like but nowhere does it say that an MMO must have group content only. Grouping is totally fine, solo is totally fine, mixing and matching is totally fine. Niether are inherently bad.
All that is left after that is the matter of player demand. Demand that, in this game in particular, does significantly lean toward solo content as well as group content.

MMOs can be for more than just for groupers, you know.

Everquest is going on 16 years. Yes it has gotten a lot more solo than when it first came out,but it still way harder to solo than this game.

Final fantasy XI. Bar none the hardest MMO I've ever played. Unless you rolled a beast master that had pets, you had to join a group just to fight one mob. One silly mistake from a party member resulted in a wipe. Along with PVP in Asherons call this is the single most unforgiving game I've played

I can accept your definition, but I have to note that nowhere in "Multi Player Online" does it say "GROUP".

I do not like the forced SOLO instances in ESO, namely those places in the guild quests and main quest where the player is required to go it alone. Similarly, I do not feel that forced group play is any more appropriate. I wish to add to all of this: outside of formally ranked events and scenarios, which can be solo or grouped, as designed.

MMO means Massively Multiplayer Online, which does not suggest anything to do with grouping, but does suggest that players will be sharing the game with, not a few, but a massive number of other gamers. In this environment, an MMO player should be allowed to group, or not group, as they play along side all of the other players who are in the game.

I am in the middle what MMO means to me. For questing, I like to do it solo -- I am a slow quester and do not like to rush the content. I am fine grouping or doing solo for most other PVE content. I do talk all the time in the guild chat even I do quests solo. My char might be alone (solo), but as a player, I am not (talking with real people).

Eso doesn't require a group for levelling either, I think op is just referring to the backlash that follows any group or difficult content being added. Today a thread was closed where the op was furious that there was one boss in all of orsinium pts that he couldn't easily solo. Sadly others chimed right in to support his warped opinion of just how wrong that was.

This right here is what I'm getting at. A MMO is not all about soloing and being easy content. So if you need help with something don't be surprised about it.

Vanilla WOW you needed to group for 90% of the lvling content lol because it was hard as *** and lots of quest needed 3 to 5 people just for a quest lol their you go named one for ya.

That is something that no one should have to do with, I agree. Sadly everyone is so impatient nowadays and unwilling to teach and learn by trial and error. My only suggestion there would be to try and find a guild of like minded individuals. A great guild can make any game 1000 times more enjoyable.

The definition of MMO is Massively Multiplayer Online

This is a genre that takes Role Playing Games from the single player world, into a multi-player world.

Being social isn't an option, it’s a requirement...

Imo, an MMO is a game with continues updates and a social game community, where you can interact with other players as well as a game economy. It doesnt stand in the rules of MMO that it have to be group content. Thats two completely other categories, co-op or pvp.

Im happy with the solo content, but I wont be less social because of that. What we have discussed alot tho, is that all solo rewards and loot are bind on pickup, so you cant earn or trade something other then mats after a deconstruct or harvest.

I think there is plenty of good group content already, and the imperial city is giving you your own choice if you want to group or not. I made 200k TV stones solo, but have also made good profit and had fun in groups. I think imperial city is well made.
There is also two daily pledges everyday that needs a group.

Craglorn.. Where to start. Yep its a fail imo. Try group for clearing the crag quests, you will be busy for weeks, spamming zone chat or waiting for group tool. The trials as well as vet DSA, doesnt give higher gear then vr14, and with some easy calculations and experienced, we all know the power of vr16 gear, weapons and enchants. So Craglorn group atm is pure fail.

You're doing it all wrong. Never use the word "help", it's like saying "Hi, I have the gonorrhea, make babies?"

MMO players will naturally avoid anyone asking for "help", based on some earlier expedience, when they did help and it took hours of wiping.

Say something like: "LF3M DD's + tank for daily dungeon"

You will get loads of responses.

Most guys wants to do dungeons, but they're to scared or lazy to make the group, so nothing ever gets done, because no one starts the damn group.

If you want your player base to be social, you need to implement the tools to encourage it. Hacking in a voice chat system with nothing but basic options isn't enough. The voice only system doesn't work for an rpg, but is perfect for console shooters where the groups are usually small and dependent on a friends list.

Multi-player means different things to different people. Multi-player to me simply means that multiple players are playing the game together in some sort of shared space (in the case of an MMORPG, a massive space with role playing elements). They may be cooperating, fighting with each other, ignoring each other, or whatever. They're all PLAYING, but not necessarily COOPERATING or GROUPING. I would call those more specifically "multi-cooperative" or "multi-group," as opposed to the more generic "multi-player."

As for the argument that "Well, most other MMO's require grouping" I can only respond with "Well, I'm not playing most other MMO's. I'm playing this MMO."

I play it 'cause it's an Elder Scrolls game not because it's an MMO. Yes, a lot of us solo'rs shouldn't be surprised when group content comes out, but a lot of the MMO players shouldn't be so surprised that solo'rs play this game too when its roots are pretty deep, and thus get thrown a bone as well at times.

We may not get along sometimes but we're all roommates and pay the bills so neither can kick the other out.
