I've always been a major TES fan since Daggerfall, and this game is perfect for me since I can experience the world of Nirn while playing/chatting with friends at the same time.
Things that I usually do:
- take a stroll through Tamriel: last week I simply went through Alik'r and Eastmarch, reminiscing a bit, taking SS etc... Tamriel is meant to be explored
- pledges: even though I've currently done 42 of them without finding a monster helm (got plenty of good Shoulders, but no Helmets)
- gathering mats in IC while I'm researcing the 8th trait on several Light Armor pieces for Kagrenac's Hope, so that I can eventually craft an entire 5 pcs Glass set of it
- learning how to PvP properly: currently using the Phoenix set for that since it helps me learn from my mistakes and survive a bit longer. Recently joined a PvP Dueling guild and had a couple of fights with some great players from AD. Still have much to learn, but I'll get there
And currently I'm eagerly anticipating Orsinium

Sadly, however, they're all leaving because they're not enjoying the game any longer. I know I should play a game because I love it and not because someone else is but what's an MMO without other people that you enjoy playing with?

I love this post.
This is what ESO is all about.Having fun.Not whining and demanding more, more, more, all the time.If you need someone to give you an incentive, you have no place in ESO. It's a game created out of love for the entire world of The Elder Scrolls. It isnt some game you run through and quit because you think you've done it all. There will always be things to do.Crafting, fishing, hunting, battling and so much more. Ever since I bought Morrowind in 2002,I've loved ES. I also played WoW and thought wouldnt it be awesome if there were others to play the game along side.To feel the life of everyone running around.lol.Morrowind is that beautiful that I wanted to see how others responded to it.Well, while I dont have Morrowind in ESO,I do have bits and pieces of it to enjoy.Like MW, there are tons of stuff to keep doing. I have no plans to stop either. Here is my incentive: One day they might add Vvardenfell.

Except EVE and WOW.
Don't feel bad OP... I usually get that feeling when I hit Cadwell's Silver and realize that I won't be seeing my friends in AD anymore. Then I lose motivation to continue and end up starting a new character so I can run AD all over again; hence the reason I have no characters over VR2. *sigh* I keep hoping that one of these times I'll have created a character I enjoy playing so much that it will keep me motivated to play through Silver and Gold.

There will always be things to be doing but the question is will those activities be worth doing? This is a very gear driven game but when the new shiny seems weaker then the old shiny it discourages you. Also with the flexibility you are really able to customize a build so when you dedicate 64 levels to achieving that build optimally then the new content won't allow for continuation of that path and none of the new options really fit with what you had been doing you get the what a waste feeling.

The carrot.
Namely the costumes and skins you can get. Currently trying to get to VR16 for that costume.

If you enjoy doing them, then yes. That matters so much more than whether you get a decent bit of gear or an achievement. It's sad that so many people have lost sight of the idea of playing a game just for the enjoyment of playing it.
imo, vr ranks, cp point issues, broken skills, class imbalance, endless loading screens, lag aren't really demotivating. Nope not at all.
Some cool people you play the game with and activities you do together. That's the motivation source you need to play a mmorpg for a long time.
Speaking of activities what do we have here? Cyrodiil, dungeons, TV stone farming.... err.... questing? rp? fishing? trading? Seriously, people spend many hours playing this game daily. Thanks ZoS there are good amount of dungeons to do for a new game like eso. But both in pvp and pve you team up and kill stuff right?
What do you do together with your friends when when you don't fight? Do we have stupid mini games to kill time? a guild hall or a housing system? build a small boat to just go for an open sea exploration? a maze like the one we saw in one of those harry potter movies? play music together with them? ok they all sounds stupid. but in a massive game like this I expect that kind of stuff to just to have fun for the mad god's sake.
