Console: Should text chat be implemented with the IC patch?

    Yes
Just to reiterate a previous point but voice chat has zero moderation. That makes it inferior to text chat as unless a mod directly hears disruptive, profane or insulting language and can identify who is talking there is nothing that will ever be done to discourage such behavior. Text chat can be reported and is logged so even days after the incident, action can be taken (or a bot can act immediately). This alone is the reason why having only voice chat is problematic and why so many actively avoid it (i.e. leave all chat channels immediately after loading).

If ZoS was willing to provide moderation for public voice chat then I'd reluctantly defer to their decision. Until then, voice chat is entirely inferior to text chat in regards to ESO and only encourages bad behavior among players. I mean there isn't even a push to talk button by default; that option would cut out most of the background noise by itself. It's just lazy (low budget?) game design by 2015 standards, especially for an MMO.

Text chat for console is a good idea. There are WAY TOO MANY limitations without having text chat.

    Buying Selling
    Finding a group
    Coordinating pvp
Getting people to join group chat channel

Sure these have work-a-rounds... but do u know how freaking hard it is to talk in Mournhold or other popular cities?
You literally have to tell people to STFU for a second, so people can hear what you're saying.
You're forced to be a *** just so your message is heard.
    It's not a good thing.

Do you know how hard it is to get someone to join group chat when they don't auto join it? You can send them mail (nope this player does not exist), or u can message them on xbox live (nope this gamertag is unavailable). And even if these 2 options work.. it still takes u 3-4 minutes just to send a message and is a huge pain in the ass. Grouping should not feel like a chore!!!

Text chat on console would be much different. It wouldn't be spammy and fast-paced like it is on PC. People would type a message and it would sit. "Group looking for x/y/z" and its in the chat log for a bit because its not so spammy.

Damn... most people are for text chat on console, but its a few of you with your strong anti-text chat opinion that are going to ruin it for the masses.

You must mean the masses who are playing the game right now, instead of the vocal minority here in the forums.
Honestly even if you rolled the PC votes in to this poll, you still have a drop in the bucket compared to the actual population.

And no this is not representative, as most happy players never even bother with the forums.
More stable voice chat is all we really need.
Text chat is a feature. Just a option.
And its a redundant one at that. The devs said no.
The core of the community seems open to the new kind of mmo, one tailor made for the console.

This thread is long for one reason.

The pro text guys love to type.

Long winded arguments spanning several paragraphs and usually full of caustic insults.

Why would anyone want that brought to the console experience?

Read a few messages at random and think that right now, you might have common cause with the rudenes, but in text chat the same people whose rudeness you cheer and applaud, might be directed at you. Or at new casual players.

The nicest guy in here is smurf. All the text guys seem to be chomping at the bit to spread the spite.

Let's keep our community happy and just pass on the text chat.

So there is no rudeness in voice chat? There are not hours and hours of video of players showing the continual crass nature of voice chat? Really now?

    Also reduntant you say?

"...I'll give you an example. If I am in a guild with 45 people other than myself online, and I am looking for a team to run a trial. I'd need 11 other people. However of those 45 online only 5 of them are in guild chat. Now how am I suppose to communicate with the other 40 in a more streamlined way than being able to type in guild text chat "LFG trial group, need 11. I'm X role". Should I message them all individually? Randomly invite them to a group, hoping they are not busy or already grouped? Voice Chat only does not provide an efficient means to tackle this issue, and text chat does."

That is from a previous post of mine. How if text chat would solve that situation in a more efficient manner than voice chat is text chat reduntant exactly?
What would you do if they don't use Text chat and prefer voice?Another thing what of they just don't want to talk to anyone and play Solo.Text chat won't help with that either.Just saying not trying to start a argument.

If they dont use text chat.... then they dont use it....if someone wants to play solo...then they will play solo....

People intentionally cutting off comunication is not a good enough reason to not implement text chat....lol your comment made no sense... lol
Believe it or not it was a question that's why I used a ?.Also it wasn't a posted against text chat but I guess you have a problem reading.Lol and your response made even less sense try reading it before you to to make a snippy response.Hey that's your problem not mines.I just asked him a question what would you do if they decide not to use the option that you are using? You can try a PUG group but its not the same with running with Guild mates that know you and how you play.I believe in that Case sending Xbox live or PSN messages might be his best option.

On PC you can actually play with the keyboard as it functions as a controller. Console does not offer this option and is not fully possible

Keyboard can probably function as many things, but this nothing to do with it. I know my English is not the best, so let me try again.
You claim you play on PC with a controller. Correct?
You also claim when on PC and while using a controller, you can type AND play at the same time (see above quote) because you also have a keyboard in hand. Correct?
Forget about consoles and their options for a moment, and talking strictly PC only- How do you use a controller to play while at the same time typing on a keyboard?

I play on a controller using Pinnacle Profiler and an Xbox 360/Xbox One controller that is wired to my PC.
My PC is an ASUS gaming republic laptop to being as USB cords aren't but so long I'm sitting at the keyboard.

    Option1: (2013)
If I need to type the keyboard is there and the mouse is always there so while typing using the keyboard on PC I can continue playing. The next break I pick back up the controller.

The convenience here that's very important is that the keyboard on PC is actually a controller.
The controller peripherial is only an extension of the keyboard and mouse so the cursor and functions are enabled by Pinnacle Profiler to use the controller as a keyboard and mouse simultaneously.

It's a drastic difference from the actual controls on console but hopefully it answers your question.
The keyboard that I'm using to communicate with in the PC UI is setup in a way to allow a user to type and play simultaneously because the keyboard is the controller and the controller is the keyboard.

    Option 2:(late 2014 to current)
I purchased a Xbox one keypad that works on PC's that now enables me to use the controller as a mouse and keyboard along with using the keypad as a controller and keyboard with controller use as the mouse.
I touch type (reasonably fast I like to think) due to my profession.

Honestly, it'd be quicker and more efficient for me to put my controller down, type a message and then pick my controller back up - compared to trying to type and move my character at the same time.

With the new (for Xbone....the far, far superior PS4 has had that option for some time  ) controller keyboard plugins, you wouldn't need to put your controller down....use your thumbs to type.

Not my ideal option...but then I do prefer a full-size keyboard.

Still...it's becoming more and more apparent that the "using a keyboard impractical for consolers" argument is losing any validity it had.

unrelated - why on earth is there a  emote?

I don't think you're reading and comprehending this as it's written.
In option 1 I'm literally placing the controller down and going mouse/keyboard as you'd die or allow group members to die as a healer (I'm a healer)

Option 2 the controller and keypad are being used together just like option 1 but without a mouse and keyboard.

    Loosing validity?
-If the controller on console could do what a keyboard does on PC or if a Consoles allowed full keyboard play then I could see it loosing validity but the issue is the lack buttons
How so? Unless you can move and attack with a single hand, you still lose something by using a keyboard for text and movement.

With the controller-keyboard plugin, you have the same thing....although due to button placement and such, you can still block and use weapon attacks.

As mentioned, the controller-keyboard isn't my thing.....but for the younger generation who grew up with texting on phones etc, it could do the trick.

I'll be over in the corner putting my controller down, picking up my keyboard and typing, then reversing the process. And odds are pretty good you wouldn't notice much.

    Have you played on PC?

You can move and attack with a mouse alone so one hand literally can heal and attack if you decided to while typing. Especially with Pinnacle on a controller
    Good grief no....there's a reason I'm a consoler!

I have to say the thought of playing with one hand and trying to peck out a message with the other sends shivers up my spine.

In saying that, I'd never be typing mid combat...that doesn't even remotely sound like a good idea.

Using DCUO as an example, we'd use text for most everything. Any relevant combat mechanics would be outlined before the fight....definitely not during. And if you have to pick up a keyboard to ask for more power, healing or to call the tank a noob....well, there are other issues at play really.

Voice chat definitely has it's place....as does text chat.

Lol. Your response made me chuckle. God no...

I agree text chat has its place for sure so in the topic a couple of participants began thinking around a text chat box or menu within the social or any quick access menu.

I personally wouldn't want to type out mechanics nor do I want to wait for someone else to and then read it.
We just talk while we play just like I did in DAoC, Everquest, WoW, Linegae 2, LoTRO, Warhammer, etc.

When faced with a choice voice is much faster. I think the irritating part is in towns when ppl are just standing around so in context having casual ways to type out of combat may be ideal for others. Just not me so I'm only opposed to having a text box on my screen or a box on my UI. If ZOS were to place it in the quick menu like how we hit menu or menu and Y (triangle on PS4) and scroll to the recent interactions or stay on the main voice chat that's a menu that needs a lot of improvement anyway so building in a functional way to communicate there which could involve text and voice seems reasonable. We discussed and realized the controller is pretty full soto have a good functioning text chat window without sacrificing in-game controls seems like a good fit. Heck even make it optional to pop out for ppl who want it

I'd prefer it not be a zone text but use the same radius as voice but other than that I'm all for some people having the option so as long as it's not on the main UI

Just because you perfer one way doesnt mean everyone perfers that same way.

You must be extremely new to mmos because people commujicate boss and dungeon mechanics with text chat all the time....and guess what.... it only takes a few seconds to read it....

And believe it or not, sometime text chat is more effective during boss battles.... People who actually played mmos will know this.(this includes consoles mmos also)

Respectfully your comments aren't helping and often times come across as attacking vs discussing.
I think to you I've shared multiple pages of relevance to my gaming experiences where a larger experience comes from the genre of MMO types since he 1990's.

In competitive gaming people talk in the genre of MMO and do not type especially in games like this where guilds seek to be the first or fastest. Guilds in WoW like Tempora Heroica as an example were one of the top on the ER role playing realm I played on for years and voice chat was required. Even the casual guild I joined later required 40 and 25 man voice chat named the Illuminati and only in very old modem based game like DAoC where Spirits of Saint George did we rely on text chat but...it was 56k modems ages ago

Not to insult you but I suspect your experiences to MMO games have been for you a different perspective and goal from what's considered competitive gaming.

Text chat is NEVER more effective than voice for boss fights as it takes people's hands, fingers and eyes off being productive...takes longer to communicate and answer questions and also lacks the ability to adjust on the fly

But that's not what the topic is about. It's not me vs you.
It's your feature desires to ZOS....let's focus there

DCUO put me on the EU server (based on the fact that I have a NZ PSN).....so I was exposed to a multitude of languages over voice chat.

Trying to explain mechanics over voice in a group who speak any combination of French, German, Dutch, English (and a league mate who only spoke Greek) meant that text was the optimal way of explaining DCUO "mechanics". Single words that could easily be translated...."boss jumps, block" etc.

Although if I'm honest, that rarely happened.....more often than not you'd get KOd by some invisible hit (due to rendering issues) followed by the loading screen as your group kicked you for not knowing what was happening.

Is your perspective from Pick up groups or guild related and friend encounters?

And i answered your question with a statement... pugging and talking with guildmates is much easier threw an in game text chat like every good mmo has. Having multiple forms of communication is needed for mmos. And usingnxbox live or psn messagingnsystemnis always the last resort because it is the least practical out of the three which also forces you out of the game to set up and use.

You cant hide or run from this fact no matter how hard you try. And you can makenup "what if" situations all you want, and it still doesnt change the fact that eso needs text chat.

Did some digging through the old text chat thread and came across this:
OK. I've played some PvP. I am beginning to think text chat may help there.
As long as it can be invisible if other players want it and if its already in the files and dissent subtract money from the funds used for PvP fixes, dlc development etc, I guess I really don't care if they add it or not.

Here's a thought though, in PvP when a castle is being Attacked or scroll is being taken, will the same people who ignore the giant flashing 'scroll has been stolen from x' also be ignoring the text chat instructions/ strategy?

I was also thinking about the viability of forming a server guild, and having every team style player join and then branch off in to tactical groups using the multiple channels and maybe getting coordinated by one guy maybe some one with strategy exp.

Then the commander swaps between the guild chat channels ordering quickly each squad.

Commander mode for eso. The commander might even be at the base using the map and spam recruiting fresh arrivals interested in giant battles.

Of course this is all just my opinion.

    -
You left those "good MMO " for this game that never was to have text chat.
Why are you picking fights with ppl in this forum for a game you no longer play?

    -
Pick up groups are not really good via text compared to voice as no one knows anyone so communication much more important. As seen here most ppl skim read so text is not a best or better way to communicate.

    -
Your opinion of having multiple forms of communication is and has been absent of supporting how to make your ideas viable and you continue to refuse to engage with others to get some form of what you desire

    What's the issue here?

I personally think both options should be available. If a person prefers not to use chat, it could be assumed they would be one of the people in guild chat. However a plus for text chat is that it let's player communicate with multiple guild memebers at once, without them all needing to be in guild chat.

A person playing solo wishing to talk to no one, has little connection to the scenrio. They would likely not be in a guild to begin with.

Ok I just have to ask..How do you use the controller, if the keyboard is in your hand?
Doesnt the controller require 2 hands on it to play? If the keyboard is already in one hand, by my count you dont have enough hands left to continue playing while you type?

Scroll up. It was answered there...
    ....

Is your perspective from Pick up groups or guild related and friend encounters?
The kicking? That's endemic in DCUO...mostly PUGs though. Although I did see it start to bleed into leagues on occasion.

If you meant the communication, that was largely PUGs...although occasionally leagues as well - such as the Greek guy who joined the league I was in. Due to the time-zone I'm in, it was incredibly common to end up in groups made of largely of French players. *bites tongue*

Dutch and German players made up a decent chunk of the player base online at the same time....then there was the guy in our league from the UAE - where voice simply wasn't an option, as it was was completely blocked.

Sure these have work-a-rounds... but do u know how freaking hard it is to talk in Mournhold or other popular cities?
You literally have to tell people to STFU for a second, so people can hear what you're saying.
You're forced to be a *** just so your message is heard.

Do you know how hard it is to get someone to join group chat when they don't auto join it? And even if these 2 options work.. it still takes u 3-4 minutes just to send a message and is a huge pain in the ass. Grouping should not feel like a chore!!!

Text chat on console would be much different. It wouldn't be spammy and fast-paced like it is on PC. People would type a message and it would sit. "Group looking for x/y/z" and its in the chat log for a bit because its not so spammy.

Damn... most people are for text chat on console, but its a few of you with your strong anti-text chat opinion that are going to ruin it for the masses.

First I wasn't talking to you it was a question for that poster that had nothing to do with you.You complain about Mr.Skull being a Troll but it seem the pro text team also has one.

A statement that had nothing to do with the question and made even less sense very helpful. Did I say that wasn't the case once in my question no I didn't so again you just posting to post that's it.Again that is opinion that isn't for everyone I talk in guild chat every night with my Guild with 100+ members and 50+ in every chat but Officers chat we don't have that many officees only about 5-7.Its not bad for us but that's us and not everyone else .

Another thing I notice why do you think people who disagree with you never played a MMO before?Smurf and many other have over a decade of MMO Experience if you take their words on it.Am sure all of us know how MMO work but can we not disagree with each other.Lets use a example from a poster of another thread here in the forums. They asked for flying mounts.I idea I believe is not a good one and I said that.I did not go around being a rude because they disagree with me.

Also using the Xbox messaging system or PSN won't take you out the game. You can use your phone and use the PSN and smart glass app.To send a message its just like putting your controller down to pick up a keyboard no difference.

Again dude calm down Its not that serious.

Those aren't facts those are your opinions....
    -
You left those "good MMO " for this game that never was to have text chat.

Now all that you said is opinion.

You just wish my states werent facts, but sorry to burst your bubble (im really not sorry) but eso was designed for text chat (pc version proves that). Just because I dont b play doesnt mean I have no access or right to share the facts I have.

Text in pug grpups work fine, some people are nervous when speaking to strangers and text chat eases that tension. Many times on DCUO i eould be using my mic and some of the people in my group will be using text, it worked fine, and I understand it. I have a deep voice and some people are uncomfortable with that or intimdated, or just dont feel like talking. And we completed the latest raids like that....So you sayingn ext isnt best .... is a very biased and ignorant opinion.

You b convientant ignored when I gave very vailable implementations of multiple forms of communication. Ne and several others yave ex0lained thoroughly to you how, and you just whine about it because n you dont n like it.

Text chat like n pc will work perfect for this game. And these are the facts.

Like I said with the other poster I don't disagree with you here it was just a question of what would you do.Another thing you can send a group message using the Xbox smart glass app.if you are trying to send a message to certain group of players just like with a text box but I believe that's faster imo.

My point was you still will have trouble getting a group even with text chat in your guild because their already a divide in the player base and their no guarantee that everyone or a good amount with only use Text or only use Voice.Unless your guild makes it a rule that we use it.

I apologize am just rambling now you can just ignore me.

Ok I just have to ask..How do you use the controller, if the keyboard is in your hand?
Doesnt the controller require 2 hands on it to play? If the keyboard is already in one hand, by my count you dont have enough hands left to continue playing while you type?

Scroll up. It was answered there...
    ....

So how does text fix foreign language barriers in the console space?
I'm curious because for me if There is a voice challenge there tends to be a comprehension challenge via text so I just stop communicating and play....in other situations that's not an options so how is that overcome via text?

Simple words that are easily picked up*, using something like Google Translate (a bit more time-consuming, but it worked well enough when I was trying to talk to the Greek league member).

The UAE league member was a non-issue, as he was a British ex-pat.

    * Simple words are easier to pickup via text over speech due to the lack of accents. Kiwi's are pretty lazy speakers....fish sounds like fush. But when written (or typed), "fish" is "fish".

Don't get me started on those dirty Ockers and asking about our large "decks", and how we maintain them.

Dont care if you werent talking to me. In an internet forum you can reply to any post you want... and I saw your post... replied to your questions... and I destroyed your reasoning with facts and common sense.

And thats the thing, voice might work perfect for you and n your guild, ( but common sense and personal experience knows that having 100 people in one voice channel at once does not work out well, so in other words I know you are lieing)

And people with mmo experience dont make the ignorant claims as some people in this thread have made, hence the reason why I question their statements. Unlike most people I dont take what everyone says as gospel because people lie....

    Yes
For voice chat to be effective there needs to be no more than ~10 people using it, and even then not everyone can talk. Anyone who has ever led (or participated in) a professional meeting understands why this is the case. Text chat has no effective limit as you can read it and scroll through it without missing anything. Spam filters make it even easier too.

Voice chat is fantastic for dungeons, good for trials, but struggles once 10+ players start talking at the same time so it just doesn't work well for large guilds, area/region, or recruiting/trading. ZoS felt that voice chat was enough but it fails in so many significant ways that it either needs to be vastly improved or have supplemental text chat added. Hopefully they will address this issue once IC is fully released.

Sure these have work-a-rounds... but do u know how freaking hard it is to talk in Mournhold or other popular cities?
You literally have to tell people to STFU for a second, so people can hear what you're saying.

It's funny how you mentioned common sense and you haven't used it against me yet.You didn't even destory my reasoning that what makes it even funnier. Also your common sense goes out the window when your using it out of context like you did.

Like I said we have about 50 in a channel in a Guild of about 250 that's pretty Good. Also you don't have to believe me because I don't care your just some random dude wanting to start arguments online. So you really affect me.Damg you now am be up all night being angry not dude get real. So maybe try reading my psot before you response and I mean more then once so you can get it.

The same here I don't take everything people say as Gospel and just because someone disagree with you their ignorant umm OK wow.Well I can't help you with that but alright.

Hey you know what it's late for me so am going to bed have a Good night. Hopefully you can work on your manners.

"What would you do if they don't use Text chat and prefer voice?Another thing what of they just don't want to talk to anyone and play Solo.Text chat won't help with that either.Just saying not trying to start a argument"

    Direct quote from you....
    My response...

".If they dont use text chat.... then they dont use it....if someone wants to play solo...then they will play solo....

People intentionally cutting off comunication is not a good enough reason to not implement text chat....lol your comment made no sense... lol"

You must be thinking of someone elses response to a comment of yours.... because my res0onse to you not only addressed your questions but exposed your implications and destroyed your whole argument

And you must have misunderstood my last comment, I wasnt saying your guild didnt have 50-100 people at once in guild chat, I was saying having that amount of people in the chat at once doesnt end up well, you just get a huge mess on the mic unless the people are muted or just off their mics.

And dont talk to me about manners because ...

Ok I just have to ask..How do you use the controller, if the keyboard is in your hand?
Doesnt the controller require 2 hands on it to play? If the keyboard is already in one hand, by my count you dont have enough hands left to continue playing while you type?

Scroll up. It was answered there...
    ....

Pros & Cons of Text Chat in Dot form.

    THE PROS
    - UNLIMITED Proximity
    - Deaf players will now be able to communicate with new players
    - Players with anxiety and social issues will now be more likely to try grouping with new players
    - Players like husbands or children up late playing whilst everyone in their household is asleep will be able to communicate with the online public
    - Real time Trading will become much more fluent (no more hour long guild store expeditions across the map daily).
    - More than one person will be able to speak at the same time! Everyone will be "heard"
    - Voice Chat will still be there!
    - More chances to use your smart glass app OR plug in your old keyboard

    THE CONS
    - Messy UI
    - Keyboard Warriors & Bullying (hell that happens on here and voice chat too)
    - Not really an option DURING FIGHTS in dungeons (but you could still text chat after wipes or between mobs for strategy discussions)
    - People with major reading difficulties won't be able to use it
    - More zergs in Cyrodiil (still better than getting to the map and trying to find the action with 15 min horse rides though right?)

THESE ARE THE FACTS! I haven't added any of my opinions (or at least tried NOT to - maybe just the brackets are my little extra say so ignore them to remain on target), I've just added simple dot points on both sides.

Now the way you read these dot points and how you reply to them will decide just how bias or open minded you are. It'll also show us what your priorities are. Do you want a pretty interface? Or do you want more ways to communicate with your community to make your ESO experience that much easier and enjoyable?

Your point of veiw is severly flawed, selfish and narrowminded. And to be completely honest your veiws are not needed because it actually hinders the gaming b experiencenfor others.

My perspective as outlined is from competitive gaming guilds in this genre. Just because my experience isn't the same as yours doesn't conclude I'm lacking in years or experience. To the topic it specifies that challenges your dealing with due to an a sense of text chat are no longer obstacles for anyone who has similar experiences to me in competitive gaming in the genre of an MMO. Your examples are also very recent or new games in the genre so it seems that the name calling and aggressive comments to me are for whatever reason how you communicate via text.

You're the exact example of why people like me do not want this form of communication in the game.
That and the logistic of consoles don't have a way to block text in game without completely blocking the user while voice only blocking is supported. We've discussed challenges of having a text box outside of a menu and you've yet to offer ideas on how to
Manage and use a box outside of a menu so please contribute to the topic that your so passionate about vs storing up users.
What you're doing is considered baiting and trolling which can get you suspended from the forums.

Again you continue with insults vs addressing the topic what logical ideas do you have that have not been addressed by ZOS on this topic?

Hmm, I think it would be a good idea to have an Application where player can text chat. Everybody has an Ipad, Iphone, or an Android device so it will be easy to chat. It won't ruin your or other player's interface while playing.

That app should be used as a map or something like that, same as seeing your damage, buffs and other interesting UI. I dont think it's complicated.

But still voice chat works fine for me. The only downside is grouping up with randoms. If you have an active guild it isnt a problem.

ZOS also said that you would have to control a certain amount of keeps in Cyrodiil to access Imp City.
However, after mass outcries from the playerbase they changed this.

The only people that want this isssue to stop being discussed are the people that are afraid that ZOS will see the error of their ways.
