I guess lore can be expanded without problems as long as it does not contradict existing lore. I can totally see a mage creating that ice or fire horse. Or a necromancer a skeleton horse.
But I still wont buy anything of it, since cosmetic items not earned inside the game have no value to me. It would be better if this stuff would be a micro DLC which adds a new quest chain to earn the item.

This gets all of my agrees! I would absolutely love that! For each non-standard mount and unusual costume when we purchase it, instead of just automatically getting it, have it mail you an item (a letter to read or something) that when you use it starts a quest scaled to your level. That way, if you've got multiple characters you can choose which one you want to complete the quest on (just use that character to activate the item), and then you can go and do the quest, and as a quest reward you get the mount/costume/whatever.

    That would be awesome.

How would you feel if there were a cash shop item that would start that quest for non-plus subscribers? Then Zenimax can still get money, but it still had to be earned in-game?
Every time someone swears, it gets replaced with three asterisks. There's only one three-letter swear word that I know of. I read that in the place of every set of three asterisks. It makes for some amusing sentences.

As far as I know the Senche mounts in ESO were NEVER part of any TES lore.
"...The Senche-Tiger, the largest great cat in existence, (...) can often be found serving as steeds..."

"...Nord bards (...) do not sing of how the great Ash King rode Dro'Zira up the Red Mountain..."

Pocket Guide to the Empire, 1st Edition: The Elsweyr Confederacy & The Tale of Dro'Zira

I have always read that passage to mean the Senche Khajiit. Not the Senche cats. But I can see how it could be interpreted to mean the mounts in ESO. And you should have included the whole passage, as it contains pertinent information.

" Even the Senche-tiger, the largest great cat in existence, has proven to be just another form of the khajiit; these massive beasts can often be found serving as steeds for their more humanoid cousins."

If this passage IS taking about our mounts, it's wrong about them being Khajiit.
What ESO really needs is an Auction Horse.
    That's right... Horse.

Khajiit are goofy. Lore wise, depending on what moon cycle they're born under, they can either be born cats, senche Tigers, or walking and talking furry thieves. So senche Tigers are still khajiit.

    Something like that.

Yeah, I look at some of the mod'ed pics on FB from other titles, and they aren't even TES anymore. Nothing at all resembles the original game they are changing.

Doesnt matter what they do in ESO, some of us are going to love it, some of us are going to hate it. As long as it looks "plausible" to the setting of the game, I'm likely okay with it. Whether or not I'd use it myself is another matter...
If options weren't necessary, and everyone played the same way, no one would use addons. Fix the UI!

The Scarecrow and Pumpkin polymorphs and to a slightly lesser extent, the skellie mounts just went over the line.
    Big facepalm here.

Skyrim had a skeletal mount. It was part of Dawnguard. You could argue, that whilst not skeletal, Shadowmere fits into the undead category too.

Now, skeleton horses I can see. It's not unthinkable that necromancy works on more than just human skeletons. Lest we forget, one already exists in lore:

Its sad, in the single player games, mods could make everything extremely consistent with the lore, but since this is an MMO, lore-fans are at the mercy of the company and other players. This could have been easily avoided if there was a server system that placed you with other players who wanted strict adherence to lore, keeping out the more questionable aspects of the game.

My ideal crown shop would only include lore-friendly mounts.
Senche, regular horses, camels and guar would be the merchandise. They would be reskinned forever and ever. I might budge on adding something like a bear or something but you certainly wouldn't see a flaming horse.

But now we have horses that are on fire, made of a glacier and are undead. Some of those are relatively okay seeing as how their variety has had precedence in former games (like the upcoming skeletal horse), but the rest are just there for the sake of it in the hopes of gaining cash. It is very telling on the loyalty to their own franchise when their own cash shop starts offering ludicrous mounts that do not abide by lore.

I have been seeing so many threads appear wanting certain outfits and costumes that just doesn't fit into Elder Scrolls lore that I'm a little worried  I have been a massive ES fan from the beginning and now having an MMO has been amazing. I love the lore, the land and the people there. I own maps, books and other nerdy little things, so I really hope any future add-ons don't sway from what makes it great. I don't want to see silly outfits or anything that doesn't play a part in ES xD *panics*

P.S. I'm not saying people shouldn't suggest things if it's something they really want to see, I'm just expressing my concern in regards to the franchise

It is interesting to note a recent article that says that gamers tend to align with specific brands. There is more loyalty to the brand than the type of game. Elder Scrolls players will be more likely to play an Elder Scrolls MMO because it is an Elder Scrolls game. Meanwhile, people who like other brands will tend to discount an Elder Scrolls MMO, even if they play other fantasy MMOs that are similar. This article (google it) claims there is no such thing as an "MMO gamer" that games can tap.

I am definitely attached to the Elder Scrolls brand and the article definitely speaks to how I have been deciding what games to play, and pay for, over the last decade. To me, it is important for ZOS to remember that they are Elder Scrolls first, and Online second. I expect that the Elder Scrolls brand will carry more weight in the game. I like Elder Scrolls more than I like MMO. I have a goodly list of other MMOs that I do not play.

To me, this is why they cannot just dump Halloween stuff in the Crown Store. I am certain that the stuff will sell very well, but I don't want to sit there and justify how these things fit into Elder Scrolls Online and the Elder Scrolls brand. It should be plainly obvious because these thing should already be part of the game before they are put in the Crown Store.

This has nothing to do with ruining my "immersion", by the way. Don't even go there. This is all about how I interpret what is, and is not, Elder Scrolls. I am willing to spend money, lots of money, on Elder Scrolls stuff. I am not interested in spending money on something that I think is just Elder-Scrolls-In-Name-Only so they can grab cash. Y'all can fork over your money for that. I draw the line at the scarecrow and pumpkin head, for sure, and the jury is still out on the mounts.

For starters, they can expand on the lore as much as they want. THEY OWN THE FRANCHISE which your maps, books, etc.. are based on.

Just because something wasn't already discussed in other TES games/books, etc... doesn't mean it never existed. That's about the equal of those who believe in almost any religion saying... welllll it doesn't mention space or Dinosaurs so neither must have existed.

What needs to end is people trying to keep the lore in a static, flat state. The lore should evolve and expand as do all great series unless they don't plan on making any other TES games. Sure there's some lore there which they could play out in the game already written, but keep in mind not all of it would be fun for the majority of gamers while some of it may be. Lore-expansion happens, deal with it.

Edit: ALSO, MMOs can have fun things that are just for the sake of the MMO. Heck all video games can without ruining lore. If it bothers you that much, you should really stop to think about how real life is and focus more on that instead.

Which is all well and good--really it is. But they are not expanding on lore so much as they are disregarding it. These items have close to no context for their existence, no in game references or even hints at their evolution/development in the game itself. There was no book, no quest to achieve them, no nothing. Just crown store put ins.

If there was a book or something saying something like how Estre made a pact with dagon for a horse cavalry unlike any other then I would go on ahead and say the Nightmare Courser was a fine addition to the cash shop. If there was a mad mage in Skyrim that used the essence of ice wraiths to create that Frost Mare horse then I would accept it. But no.

These mounts have no nuance or any smidge of lore effort put into them. That's not lore expansion. That's not lore evolution. That's disregarding lore entirely, with not even the courtesy of acknowledging its existence other than a mere hint at their origin in the description.
