Shadowhide Problem - I'm sooo confused

I'm on PS4 NA.

I can't find any Shadowhide to harvest. The Welwas in northern Craglorn drop ironhide for me. From Craglorn all the way through Cadwell Gold areas, everything drops only ironhide.

The only beast I can get Shadowhide from are the Daggerboars in Craglorn. These are lvl 1 animals.

I'm lvl V5.
Clothing 50
Tailoring 9/9
Keen Eye 1/3
Hireling 3/3
Unraveling 1/3
Stitching 4/4
Tanin Expert 0/3

My writs are asking for Shadowhide so I'm kind of Borked.

Shouldn't matter what skill you have, it's level based. Alligators by Shadowfen drop it. Can also of course deconstruct shadowhide armor you get.

    I'm lvl V5.

You won't see Shadowhide as a drop until your VR9

Buy it from the Guild Kiosks.

One good thing, it is about 4/5 to 1 on the ratio of writs that ask for Void Cloth vs Shadowhide, so you won't need it as often.

Hide dropping animals only drop hides you can craft with or according to your level, I can't remember which - but it's by design. Zenimax doesn't care about medium armor crafters.

This is the problem. There are only very few places where you can get drops that are higher than your level. So either you buy shadowhide from guild stores or you need to level up to v9. But buying them shouldn't be a problem. Most high level players have that much shadowhide that they sell it for less than 5 gold per piece.

I can get Shadowhide scraps from the lvl 1 Daggerboars scattered throughout Craglorn. This is going to be a hard writ to fill.

Using the guild stores on PS4 is eye watering. I spent two hours this morning going through pages and pages of Ruby Necklaces and pieces of Flint for 1000 gold apiece and still no Shadowhide.

I so want to like ESO but the game makes it very, very hard.

Just drop the writ if you can't fill it and pick up another one. There is no penalty for abandoning a writ. You have a decent chance of picking up a Void Cloth writ, that is what I get most of the time.

And, Craglorn is not the only place that has kiosks that sell this stuff.

The problem is, you set your material level to be higher than your character level, so that is why you get writs above what your character can collect, with regards to animal hides.

The problem, in my humble opinion, is a game that gives me tasks that I can't perform in a normal manner.

ESOTU on PS4 is a chore to play. If a few minor issues like this one would be addressed, this could truly be a great console game.

I agree with you. However in the past, we used to get no low level materials from animal drops if we were over leveled so making items for alts and other low level players was next to impossible. So, we have the system we have in place. Will it be changed, I doubt it, but even if they would change it, that would be down the road so no help to you now.

You can either respec your crafting to remove the extra material points you don't need, or you can follow the advice given in this thread to deal with the writ you have now.

I had to tell my low level friends, that if they wanted me to craft them medium armor, they had to give me the main materials. They wanted me to make a full set, and gave me like 10-12 hide ....which is pretty much enough to craft 1 item only.

It was the same period where guts were hard to get. In Aldmeri Dominion you had to roll out a new char, then get a high lvl friend to escort you inside a cave in Reapers March, where you could kill frogs for guts..

If you are in the V9-10 Gold areas you should get Shadowhide, no?

I know that in Craglorn and Cyrodiil the drops scale to your level, but in other zones, you should be getting hide drops at the level of the mob that's dropping them.

The lvl 9s in the Rift drop Ironhide. The lvl 13 Welwas in N. Craglorn drop Ironhide. The only beast that will drop Shadowhide for me is the lvl 1 Daggerboars in Craglorn.

As long as I know it's not just me being me and not understanding what's happening, I'm good.

    Thanks again for everyone's help!

Come to think of it, VR10 mobs in a VR10 zone should drop the Shadowhide. If your Gold zone is the Rift, then the lions north of Riften are a great source. Bankgkori has some places in the desert area, and Malabal Tor has lions in the SW part of the zone.

    I have a VR9 and a VR10 character, I will test this tonight.

    I checked this morning.

The lvl 10 Saber Cats north of Riften drop Ironhide for me. The lvl 1 Deer in the same area drop Superb Hide.
