Here is a video I just recorded. I went back into a town just to use the clothier and woodworking station... and just listen to the nightmare of voice chat.
I'm recording this on my phone so the camera angles aren't the best.

We need text chat! For gods sakes I finished cad wells gold a month ago and I still can't find a group for Craglorn! If we had text chat a community would truly form not this sad excuse for a forum where every time a new player asks a question the five star supremacy tells them their thread is a waste of time and that their opinions are worthless (this happens daily). Text chat for console will give us consolers a community of our own and keep us playing longer!
Respectfully after having played Warframe and Neverwinter vs TESO on PC and Xbox One ...those experiences are what influence my vote to a no. I'm not 100% adverse to other adjustments nor am I against a text chat within the social window but that's just where I am
Regarding finding groups tho...your social options (friends list from other games and those you met here) should offer plenty of opportunities to group.
Take a day and play and talk in social chat...tons of cool ppl are more than willing to play.

And respectfully this is where you are wrong. Let's take Warframe, which I have well over 1k hours played on. When a player joins Clan chat and asks a question I can PM them and answer their questions while also communicating with everyone in clan chat and still have a voice conversation with my group while preparing for a run. This type of communication, or at least efficienct communication, is impossible currently in ESO.
If I want to organize a group run I am unable to make jokes or catch up on current events in clan chat, and there is no way I can give advice or help individual players at the same time. If you can outline how you can do all three things I mentioned at once in ESO please let me know because without text chat I find it impossible, especially since I can receive a PM in-game during a run, have the entire chat log available, and get back to them when I have time.
Text chat is not strictly better than voice chat but it does make a lot of things much easier. Often I get PMs while running a mission in Warframe and I can respond to them when I have time. I don't need a PSN or Xbox message to notify me that someone wants to talk and then have to exit the game/use a mobile phone to read it. It's just far more efficient to have both methods of communication. Don't even get me started on trades as Warframe's text chat is horrid, but ESO's voice chat is so much worse.
It's impossible to communicate via text chat WHILE playing.
Also, as this forum provides a great example...many ppl all talking at once are not paying attn to others.
It's many diff convos going on at once vs this game where in group, party, proximity or guild voice chats you have to listen and wait your turn.
You learn much more about others and honestly can get more done in addition to answering someone questions that others have. When done via voice it's without interruption.
If you prefer text chat over voice...that's fine but neither my comments nor your are "reasons" to add the feature. It's just preferences which exist on different platforms and games to our preferences.
I personally choose not to play console games that use text chat because of some of my comments but more so because of what happens indicative in this thread but add in spamming.
For me tats reason enough not to add it in. It's also why I moved from PC to console after playing on PC since 2013 closed BETa.
Warframe and Neverwinter are also completely different types of a MMO game as far as gameplay.
And their developers goals were to create a very traditional MMO feel whereas ZOS hopes to create a different TES experience with online play.
The very basic approach from day one was to make the game as much as possible look like TES
PC just has to have text chat as it makes sense to where a players hands are whereas console is gonna be different.
It's suppose to feel like TES and not like a MMO

Permission? Really? Lol nah. I will post any video I want. My video proves how flawed voice only is. Try making a group or selling something with all that going on. And if I turn off voice chat... I HAVE NO OTHER WAY TO COMMUNICATE with anyone on this game.
This is why voice only is flawed. Text chat is desperately needed, so I can turn off voice chat and still communicate with others, while everyone is square dancing in voice chat.
Uh oh Eriq , you better do what he says. I mean after all he is a rep ,no ? Employee ? No, hmmm, Anybody who has any right to tell anyone else anything they should or shouldn't do ? Apparently not. Continue on Eriq

Warframe is far more action oriented than ESO and we manage to text chat all the time during a run. I'll admit that voice chat is easier but if someone asks for an ETA on how much time is left in a run, I cam easily hit pause, respond, and be back in the action in under 10s. ESO, comparatively, has so much downtime I could have entire conversations during a mission while waiting on friends to catchup or get organized. Impossible to use text chat while playing? You must type really slow.
I agree that every MMO is different but text chat is a staple in the genre for a reason. There honestly isn't another efficient way to communicate with hundreds of other people at once; ESO is proof of that as it becomes a shouting match or filled with background noise in populated areas.
EDIT: Eriq's video is voice-only communication in practice and it completely destroys any argument supporting it as this is how it is like in-game. Also, there is absolutely zero moderation for voice chat unless a mod is present and can identify the individual speaking. Not easy when 5+ names are active at once.

You're attaching a feature to a genre based on your limited experiences in a genre.
Those ideas hold back innovation.
I think technology and our ideas can provide a better medium to communication
It's why I keep pushing ppl to think and come up with stuff but I don't want this to be an argument so.

Actually this just keeps bumping their thread which they don't appreciate.
That's what I don't get about the people telling me not to comment.
Smurf and I are actually helping by steering the conversation from the gutter and into functional, possible alternatives and in doing so bring attention to the issue.
Respectfully, this thread keeps sinking to page 5 because there's no actual interest in formulaic HUD clutter text chat.
Steering the conversation into options that people may be open to and are feasible from a technical standpoint seems helpful.
I really don't get the hostility.
Ya noone is interested in it except the 400 people who voted for it lol o.O
Half of which are PC players who don't even play on console...
Even if it were true -- that means it's still over 2 to 1 who want text chat
Of the people who come to the forums...
& bother to vote in a toxic thread...
Great player sampling. Really.
Says the gal who did all of the above lol
Fixt that for ya there, guy...
That matters how ? He still is right , you voted and seem to think the no votes carry weight but the yes ones don't.
Also earlier you were trying to be cute with the "half are just PC players " and I called you out on the math that even if that is true only on the yes side then it's still overwhelmingly yes.
Basically couple times you've made not that great little retorts and been called out on them and really are just digging right now.

I'm a "gal" too, and the primary reason I stopped playing ESO on Xbox entirely was due to constantly getting harassed by guys in game due to me being a "gamer girl" and being completely unable to block them to stop hearing them. Before my main reason for wanting text chat was my thick accent when I talk, but ultimately that was not as bad as I thought. This problem of being harassed literally every 15 minutes by incredibly disturbing and terrifying guys while being unable to block them is just not forgivable.
Seriously, that was 100% completely irrelevant to say that. I've been called guy/dude/etc before numerous times on these forums, but unless there's actually a reason to clarify that, it's pointless to say. It only really is done to call attention to oneself in the manner you did it.

There's plenty who just started on the PS4 or have used it only for single player games. I only have a couple of friends on PS4, while on PC, I had several friends after a month of play. Why? Because I would answer random peoples' questions about the game and lore, help them with world bosses and otherwise be able to participate in discussions while questing with random people via text chat. Now? I have to be CLOSE to people to be able to communicate with them unless I'm in a guild. So I can't do all of that anymore. I still check world boss spots when I'm travelling by, but it's useless. I want to interact with the community, not just with who is nearby.

Thanks for letting me know where you're coming from.

Alright, you name every MMO without text chat and I'll name 5 to your 1. It's a staple because almost every game in the genre has it, not because of my limited experience with the genre (which you have no evidence to support your claim).
No, holding back features and calling it innovation is what holds innovation back. If ESO improved on voice chat in a meaningful way then we would be amazed at how well it works. I'm not amazed by things that have been in multiplayer games since the late 90's. Heck, there's not even a push to talk option to cut back on the excess noise. It's pretty barren in terms of innovations.

You guys really...
NewBlacksmurf wrote: »Curious question tho....
I don't know that I've seen many who do want text chat added, respond to this question...
If the devs respond as having no interest to add a text chat box on consoles like whats on PC (regardless of the reason) how do you respond?
Do you quit asking?
Do you leave the game until a later DLC or update?
Do you continue polling and creating threads/hijacking other threads?
Here's an official response on the matter from Twitch :
ZOS_Jessica_Folsom: For those asking about text chat on console, we do see all the requests for it (on our forums, social media channels, reddit, etc.), but we don't have anything new to share about the topic.

I do have something new to share with you Zenimad,I'm selling the game.
Next time you develop a MMORPG try to actually care about your customers.
Had a good run, good luck guys.

Stick around. They will be singing a different tune when all the couch casuals have moved on to other couch casual games. It's how console gaming works.
