To everyone that voted no I implore you to check out and play Warframe on Xbox One. In the first hour of gameplay see if you are invited to an active personilised guild, taken to some higher level areas that you wouldn't normally get to visit or pass til much later, get in touch with an amazing community happy to help you out and then try to do the same on ESO for console. ESO is a cold, dark and lonely experience if you don't have anyone you know from the real world playing it. The only interactions I've had with people in ESO is a couple of dances here and there or people scamming me or asking for free things.

We need text chat! For gods sakes I finished cad wells gold a month ago and I still can't find a group for Craglorn! If we had text chat a community would truly form not this sad excuse for a forum where every time a new player asks a question the five star supremacy tells them their thread is a waste of time and that their opinions are worthless (this happens daily). Text chat for console will give us consolers a community of our own and keep us playing longer!

Respectfully after having played Warframe and Neverwinter vs TESO on PC and Xbox One ...those experiences are what influence my vote to a no. I'm not 100% adverse to other adjustments nor am I against a text chat within the social window but that's just where I am

Regarding finding groups tho...your social options (friends list from other games and those you met here) should offer plenty of opportunities to group.

Take a day and play and talk in social chat...tons of cool ppl are more than willing to play.
If you don't know many hit me up on Xbox one. I'll introduce you to some

There's plenty who just started on the PS4 or have used it only for single player games. I only have a couple of friends on PS4, while on PC, I had several friends after a month of play. Why? Because I would answer random peoples' questions about the game and lore, help them with world bosses and otherwise be able to participate in discussions while questing with random people via text chat. Now? I have to be CLOSE to people to be able to communicate with them unless I'm in a guild. So I can't do all of that anymore. I still check world boss spots when I'm travelling by, but it's useless. I want to interact with the community, not just with who is nearby.

As a person with a severe hearing impairment, text chat is extremely necessary. Anyone who shares this problem will understand how inconvenient and uncomfortable it is to wear a headset with a hearing aid. Voice chat is completely lost to me and without a text option, I have zero communication with people in the game.

I'm not saying that voice chat was a bad idea, on the contrary, it was a good choice, but the decision to not include a text box seemed to be a tad silly. There are many reasons people can't participate in chat and it excludes a vast majority who don't, won't or can't use a headset by giving them literally no other way to communicate.

It's an MMO, there's no reason it shouldn't be there and I feel it wouldn't even need to be released as part of the DLC. I wouldn't imagine it would be that difficult to patch it in with a hotfix.

Thats if one can find a guild. Without text chat, recruiters have no way to advertise and so they are difficult to find. I got lucky one time and had a recruiter spam me an invite coming out of the bank, but it never happened again..

Squeaky kid voices, people blasting their music, coughing, and the worst or all, Crying babies!

Just some of the reasons of why voice chat isn't working out. Not to mention, voice chat has a small radius and many people leave the area chat channel due to the reasons I mentioned above. I'm 100% positive that ESO will get text chat, I just hope it's soon, I know a lot of people leaving due to how hard having no voice chat makes it to find a dungeon group

I must say though, no text chat does make pvp less Zerg heavy, but that's a bad reason to not have text chat. Zos just needs to add some small scale arena modes or add some mechanics that discourage zerging

Text chat can do this, text chat can do that, fine. But what is now in the game, is the best we can do.

And if I can find several guilds whom are very active, can find several players with connections for other guilds and what not, then so can most of the rest of us.

In PVP, it's highly unlikely you would grind to rank 50 with out some sort of group involved in between.

Someone showed some sort of the "ropes" to us in Cyrodiil, and if they haven't, just promote you're looking for a group.
To be honest, since players are more focused on coordinating in PVP than PVE, take advantage of this and find new connections.

I now have personal business connections regarding foods, potions and what not too. On top of that, the several guilds and guild vendors I know to help me along the way.

Excuse after excuse, there is a reason we are still flourishing in this game.

Let's not throw out the potentially creative side of getting stuff done with out a text chat.

I mean no offense, but, if something isn't working, change how you approach things.

    Sorry triplets lmao.
    You guys really...
Actually this just keeps bumping their thread which they don't appreciate. :D

That's what I don't get about the people telling me not to comment.

Smurf and I are actually helping by steering the conversation from the gutter and into functional, possible alternatives and in doing so bring attention to the issue.

Respectfully, this thread keeps sinking to page 5 because there's no actual interest in formulaic HUD clutter text chat.

Steering the conversation into options that people may be open to and are feasible from a technical standpoint seems helpful.

I really don't get the hostility.

Ya noone is interested in it except the 400 people who voted for it lol o.O

Yaay I'm sure all of those PC people who voted in a completely biased poll taken from the niche group of players who actually visit the forums, will be really happy to see the game succeed without text chat, y'know like it is without text chat.

I say this is a niche cause because obviously it is. This thread sinks without the occasional suggestion from smurf, and then as thanks he gets well, let's say rudeness.

The percentage of actual console players who voted here is tiny.

Text chat will be added the minute that the cluttered ui doesn't scare off the casual player base.

I know some people don't like the fact that ESO is bringing MMOs to a broad audience and introducing new players who might never have bothered with this type of game to a new fun experience.

But this very pragmatic move to shy away from the isolating trappings of standard mmo stuff is going to mean success for ESO.

You have no idea the amount of people I talk with that say within the first two sentences the words 'I don't normally play this kind of game'.

But there they are. Playing an awesome game that we all love and bringing in tons of revenue while they are at it.

Destiny avoided using mmo terminology and outdated communication tech for the same reasons.

What's the number one grossing game today?

    Candy crush.

If a company has the option to take a lot of money from one customer, a hard core, or a little bit of money from a thousand casuals who can pick the game up and easily play, it makes more sense for them to keep out the hardcore crunchy stuff until long after the player is hooked.

Why is DC online free to play?

Because its complicated HUD scares away casuals who might have paid for it.

Why is ESO still rockin at 60$ ?

Because it makes a good live stream.

    It looks classy.

Try to think of text chat as a vegetarian offering at a restaurant.

    Sure its good for you.

Sure its probably going to help your stomach communicate with your colon better and more often.

Sure it seems simple to provide if you don't think about the massive farming infrastructure and labor abuses, or market fluctuations that can put farmers who try to oblige the vegetarians out of business.

But one thing I know from experience is that

People get REALLY annoyed when you try to push your personal preferences into them.

From my own personal experience, long silences usually are a precurser to everyone switching tables with me at the steak house.

    Cheers.

Yeah , i really don't know how people can make it to end game and not have accidentally made at least one friend.

Voice chat is full of people in towns but there are tons of places where it thins out.

I just made a five new buddies in Ares chat last night. I invited them to the guild and there they met a few more people.

Some of those people were reluctant to use the mic but after a few minutes , they saw the guild was low pressure convo, boom mic on fun starts

Yes and yes and yes to this! I'm hoping chat comes before I lose patience and leave but we shall see. For now I'm creating a healer alt character in the hopes of being grouped earlier in queues. I've never played support/heal roles (luckily Templar healers are dps as much as they are healers) nor do I want to but thanks to pvp this isn't a play how you want game anyway.

    Curious question tho....
I don't know that I've seen many who do want text chat added, respond to this question...

If the devs respond as having no interest to add a text chat box on consoles like whats on PC (regardless of the reason) how do you respond?

    Do you quit asking?
Do you leave the game until a later DLC or update?
Do you continue polling and creating threads/hijacking other threads?

    Curious question tho....
I don't know that I've seen many who do want text chat added, respond to this question...

If the devs respond as having no interest to add a text chat box on consoles like whats on PC (regardless of the reason) how do you respond?

    Do you quit asking?
Do you leave the game until a later DLC or update?
Do you continue polling and creating threads/hijacking other threads?

I went into FFXIV and refreshed my memory on the UI and roamed around a bit to catch the vibe. The new expansion is supposedly hot, but I really wasn't interested. My toon is ilvl 121, so if ZOS really comes out and nixes text, I'll go back to FFXIV out of frustration and possibly start playing Witcher in between. I don't know if I can go back to DCUO. Both ESO and FFXIV are better games even if the UI and communication hub is better on DCUO. I can't do a raid with dudes flying everywhere anymore, lol. Maybe it's just pride, I don't know.
.... I have to admit, the devs do listen to reason, if not to the forums. Thank you for "nameplates", a welcome addition to immersion, as well as the text chat box for PS4, which only comes on the screen when I need it too, and helps this gameplay SO MUCH MORE then without it. THANK YOU for the additions. Very much appreciated.

If they respond and say they won't add text chat, I will be leaving the game, the forums, everything. I don't enjoy the voice only communication, I don't like having to literally shout "does anyone want to run a dungeon" 50+ times. It is too limited. So instead of staying and dealing with a system I don't like I will just leave and do something else with my time and money.

If the response is made to one of these threads (as opposed to some vague reference from a video made months ago) then yes I would.
Do you leave the game until a later DLC or update?
I dont understand this question. Yes I would leave, but why would I come back for a future update or DLC, if they responded no text chat would be in it?
Do you continue polling and creating threads/hijacking other threads?
I havent done these things and I wouldnt. Right now, I just keep coming back to see if there is an official response. Once there is one, then I see no point to continue..

Planning on repeatedly asking in the ESO live chat , along with many others , to enjoy watching them duck every important issue again. It's not like they actually answer anything important on Ask Us Anything , but at least I get to watch them actively duck all the real questions people are asking.

Just commenting on "let us in on your secret"

-When I play I often throw up a text emote followed with prix voice chat while grinding, and questing.
Also I do the console thingy - jump around silly to let ppl know I want their attn or use the silly emotes like play dead or flip coin and sit chair.

    Always begin with hello!
Voice chat as well. hi , do you mind if I quest with you or would you like to party up to kill XYZ for a bit.

-I always send out a group invite if it looks like a player is doing the same things as I and I'm very friendly cause I don't know them and vice versa.

-when in towns I turn off prox chat as more than likely it's not the best way to meet ppl
(Exceptions) banks and crafting stations are a great place to listen to others. If you hear a topic speak to the name on the screen and ask them to follow u (just to get out of the 25 raidius of others...talk, trade or whatever and go back)

-whenever you play with anyone for 30 mins or longer that's prob a good person to friend invite.
If you begin aging with them more than once make them a fav and ask about who else they play with or a guild.

-play the game socially just like you would in real life. Be yourself and do not try to mimic text chat behaviors in voice chat.

-one person speak at a time and never be sarcastic nor rude and don't keep your mic open. Mute it unless you are speaking

If you see someone fighting go help them.
If they are dying go heal them
If they are dead, go Rez them
If they are a lone fight with them solo or in a group

Nothing really mind blowing or scientific...but this is how I've met and added 200+ ppl so far either as a friend or not a friend but as a guild

I want to talk with 10-20 people at once , ones all over the zone , outside of my guild and friends list as I have in every other mmo. Text lets you meet more people , talk to more people at once , and enjoy the game sounds without interruption. With a text chat option those of us who like to play like that could and bother no one.

And respectfully this is where you are wrong. Let's take Warframe, which I have well over 1k hours played on. When a player joins Clan chat and asks a question I can PM them and answer their questions while also communicating with everyone in clan chat and still have a voice conversation with my group while preparing for a run. This type of communication, or at least efficienct communication, is impossible currently in ESO.

If I want to organize a group run I am unable to make jokes or catch up on current events in clan chat, and there is no way I can give advice or help individual players at the same time. If you can outline how you can do all three things I mentioned at once in ESO please let me know because without text chat I find it impossible, especially since I can receive a PM in-game during a run, have the entire chat log available, and get back to them when I have time.

Text chat is not strictly better than voice chat but it does make a lot of things much easier. Often I get PMs while running a mission in Warframe and I can respond to them when I have time. I don't need a PSN or Xbox message to notify me that someone wants to talk and then have to exit the game/use a mobile phone to read it. It's just far more efficient to have both methods of communication. Don't even get me started on trades as Warframe's text chat is horrid, but ESO's voice chat is so much worse.

No text is 100% ruining the game for all of my friends that played MMOs previous to this one.
Most of them have stopped playing regularly or all together solely because of not being able to run group content through forming premade PUGs.
MOst of us when playing other MMOs, including the console MMOs, would spend all day grinding dungeons and raids by joining one premade PUG one after another. In any given day we could run group content with skilled players at our level until our eyes bled.
However without text in this game we all spend our days hoping from one guild chat to another or sitting in a queue, or shouting to a dozen people in prox chat, hoping for maybe one good group a day.
If there was text in this game i know I'd be grinding at least 5 vet dungeons a day with proper group set up and informed players. Instead i'm lucky to get one good vet dungeon run a week.
NO text destroys what this game was originally designed to be... a friggin MMO. --NOT a co-op Skyrim game.

In my 30 years of playing video games this has to go up there as the worst development decision I've ever seen made to a game.
They might have used the lack of text to entice 'new to mmo' console players into buying the game, but there is no doubt in my mind they will not retain any of those players past the first dlc or two. They definitely will not generate your typical spend happy mmo addict that becomes the life blood of future income through obsessive store purchases.
It's just the sadest thing I can ever remember in gaming. I LOVE this game. I'm not some bum who's just out there grinding up to vet 14 as fast as i can. I want to experience the entire game and be able to play content with 100, 000s of other players that are out there doing the same... but i can't because there is no text. SMH; FML.

Very much agree with you Glyph. I don't want to use a headset and voice at all , just text , but I cannot imagine how someone who uses voice some wouldn't want the advantages of text also. A combination of whatever works easiest for you at that time. I've seen no one ask for no voice , myself included , and cannot grasp why others do not want others to have options. I don't use dps meters for example , but have no problem with people that love them. Seems to be some want people to play their way only , which I don't get.

The secret isn't in this thread, that's for sure.

If you're having a hard time finding an active PVE guild or an active PVP guild, shoot me a message and I will help anyone on PS4 NA server.

I will show you thatdungeon completions, group findings, sales, trades can be done without text chat for now.

If any of you want to get stuff done in game, message me. I have a whole world to show you.

All I ask, is that you listen and follow. Dedicate yourself to adapt to this new style mmo and realize that you could be much more productive if you have a good connection. I can be that connection to helping you guys out.

It's impossible to communicate via text chat WHILE playing.
Also, as this forum provides a great example...many ppl all talking at once are not paying attn to others.
It's many diff convos going on at once vs this game where in group, party, proximity or guild voice chats you have to listen and wait your turn.

You learn much more about others and honestly can get more done in addition to answering someone questions that others have. When done via voice it's without interruption.

If you prefer text chat over voice...that's fine but neither my comments nor your are "reasons" to add the feature. It's just preferences which exist on different platforms and games to our preferences.
I personally choose not to play console games that use text chat because of some of my comments but more so because of what happens indicative in this thread but add in spamming.

For me tats reason enough not to add it in. It's also why I moved from PC to console after playing on PC since 2013 closed BETa.

Warframe and Neverwinter are also completely different types of a MMO game as far as gameplay.
And their developers goals were to create a very traditional MMO feel whereas ZOS hopes to create a different TES experience with online play.
The very basic approach from day one was to make the game as much as possible look like TES
PC just has to have text chat as it makes sense to where a players hands are whereas console is gonna be different.
It's suppose to feel like TES and not like a MMO
