Why, of all things, did you ZoS change every single icon in the game?

The old ones at least had some relevance to what the skill did, so it was fairly easy to associate.

Granted, there were a couple that were not as clear as others and had other skill icon lookalikes. Tweaking those would have made sense, but all of them?

Painfully unncessary.

Some of the potential balance changes are great, but it's the little, subtle things like this that are really getting under people's skin.

Talked to some of my live group and the consensus is that they're getting tired of having to 'relearn' the game after every major patch.

I'm actually glad they finally made alternate icons for each weapon skill morph. I have actually been requesting this since launch (not sure why it took so long).

That's not fair, I'm sure they had a very long and heated debate about the icons.

    Wait, 'relearn' ?

Do people really need the skill icons to remember which skill is which?

Personally just toss them on my bar and remember the key associated with the effect.

At least they could have changed Empowering Sweep and Solar Prison icons too! They're so similar in aspect that I always confuse which bar has each and use the wrong one!

@Samadhi, it's not just this, it's other changes as well. Changes in how skills work, what triggers them, regen's, etc, while other things that need to be corrected still are not.

Regarding the icons, yes, if you've ever had to swap out a skill in a situational fight, it's good to be able to look over and know you have the right one after without going to the skill menu or firing it off.

It's an unnecessary and unasked for change, vs many changes that have been requested to at least be reviewed. I seriously doubt there is no work for the graphic artists at this time that they need to revamp what doesn't need revamping.

@leeux, this kind of thing, yes.

Overload vs Ice Comet is another example that visually are very similar. This kind of thing should not require 'memory' of which bar or skillset you had equipped - it's a visual check, same as every visual effect in the game.

Another thing they took from DAoC... funny to see posts like this again.. went through all this when DAoC got new updated sounds and icons.. the sounds were reverted due to the outcries on the forums.. the icons remained, but they provided the old icons for people that wanted to use them.

Us MMO players sure don't like change :-)

Heck some ppl in DAoC still play with old player models from 2001 instead of the updated ones.

I have to agree. Sometimes I think that, in order to justify maintaining certain jobs, they "find things" for them to do.

"Oh, Sam Smith doesn't have anything to do, so what can we have him do so that we don't have corporate breathing down our necks about people paid for doing nothing. Hmmmmm, well, I suppose we could have him work on redoing icons, we could tell corporate it was already part of our 'Quality of Life Improvement' plan. Yeah, that sounds great."

This is why many MMOs change things that don't have any rational for changing, simply because they want to keep people employed and therefore have to find ways to justify their position. Plus, there is always that, "In the future we may have need of their skills."

Thus the settings option suggestion. Thanks for adding absolutely nothing to the thread, though.

@Ace_SiN , posting about opinion and calling it complaint adds nothing to the thread, much as your comment does the same.

"Every single icon in the game"? Incredible misinformation.
Only the weapon skill morphs were changed, because before they all looked the same. They were simply brought up to the level of every other skill in the game so far. And they look fantastic.

Only thing I miss is a different icon based on sword/mace/axe, like there are different icons for each of the 3 destruction staves.

+1 insightful for actually explaining the change.

Also the icon change for weapon types would be awesome! @ZOS_RichLambert please add this to your notes.

The new icons are actually a great deal more simple and clear than the old ones. I guess it is because the old ones would look blurred at the distance you usually sit when playing on the console. So they made all the icons simpler with greater contrast.

Some have more clarity, others are scarcely different, one morph from another, nor to the original skill (Bone shield, Undaunted line, for instance, Grand Healing in the restro line...)

I can't imagine it being that difficult to make an icon with some relevance to the action it implies. Gratned, the morph issue is less prevalent, as you'll already know it's been morphed.

It seems the ones which had some definition are the ones they changed, and those that needed some distinction got left utterly alone or made worse.

ZoS: If you want alternate icons, great - make it a checkbox in the settings.

They could spend even more programming time to create a toggle condition in settings, or they could just call it done and let people take all of 5 minutes to get used to the new icons

When this goes live people will complain for a day and then you will never hear about it again.

By the same argument, they could have left it alone in the first place, and used those resources for a dozen other things that still need fixing. Arbitrary and unnecessary change for the sake of calling something "different" is both arbitrary and unnecessary.

ZoS spends far more time fixing what's not broken, and too little time doing actual fixing.

How many hours do you think it took to make new icon templates vs the time it would take to add one option setting, eh?
