Connect a keyboard. Problem solved. Go to ebay, 7 pounds / 10 usd. PS Keyboard free shipping from Hong Kong. Problem solved. We NEED the option to choose if we want to use a text chat or not. Warframe has it. This is an even bigger scaled game. No chat HURTS it so much it is painful. No trading. No team communication. No guild communication. It is ridiculous... Audio chat would work great, but 70% don't use it and in big areas it is just a cluster %$#.
respectfully, keyboards don't' just work like that on console.
-In order for a keyboard to work on a game, the developer has to specifically support this and in doing so consider how they want support to function. Specific to Xbox One...today, any text field entry is supported after prompted, and in games that do support using the "ENTER" key to avoid the text pop-up screen those interactions would then require a keyboard.
What's ideal for some isn't ideal for all.
Some play on console to avoid the PC master race gameplay...while others may be open to different opportunities of both.

You make no sense. Zero. Keyboards are compatible with xbox 1....
Actually no, dont' confuse the Xbox OS with a game running within the Xbox OS.
like on PC, all PC's can use a keyboard but not all applications support key presses the same.
This game is an application running in the Xbox One OS...all games do not support keyboards on Xbox One unless designed to do so.
letters work, but numbers don'tt always...shift and ENTER do and don't work based on the app or game running in the OS.
Thats been the big complaint about Xbox One form day 1
That response make zero sense.
You are just desperately trying to hold on to your view point for whatever reason.
Eso can easily support keyboards. The fact that you even mentioned otherwise is rediculous
Facts:
Xbox One keyboard support was added or rather enhanced here: http://news.xbox.com/2014/02/xbox-one-keeps-getting-better
*That support allows someone to plug in the keyboard and if done so prior to turning on the XBox One, it allows a user to type into text fields which by design are within the Xbox One OS.
This allows developed apps and games to also utilize the current support but that is limited as all the keys on a keyboard and the functions of the keys are not fully supported.
**All games and apps by development do not automatically support keyboard usage.

So its only for people who or not currently playing the game? I only use chat for game related issues, so why would I want to talk to them? And a bigger issue, how would I be able to play the game and watch the chat at the same time?
But I suppose it could work though, if we could have a way to place it on our game screen, maybe just stick it in a corner or something, so we can play the game and watch chat at the same time.. Hmmm now if someone could just come up with a way to do this

Mira,
I have the game...this specific game was developed to allow the ENTER key to work when the USB keyboard was plugged in when the console is turned on. Not by the developer but that's how the Xbox One handles keyboards right now...this game is just a specific example.
IF the USB keyboard is plugged in after the console is turned on the ENTER is not functional and therefore requires us to use the controller to prompt the text entry box which then creates keyboard letter functionality.
That set-up is not ideal and in this game, there linking and interacting in the text box chat requires controller button sacrifices, which is also not ideal
I'm trying to find a best fit for all sides of the conversation..without impacting other ideas that may or may not be implemented regarding controllers and keyboards.

I don't want it see it at all...Zenimax has decided not to include it which part of that was the UI (we know this tho)
so I'm suggesting a compromise to help get the idea considered....
Because the text chat feature as an all encompassing approach should have allowances for ideal usage.
The Xbox One has 3 USB ports only.
Most only have 2 available due to external HD usage
so from there 1 is often used to charge or plug in a controller in the event of a battery going low or dead
the other port can be used for other items...keyboards, wireless headset, alt HD for non gaming files, or the TV adapter
The PS4 may differ but our discussion has to work for both PS4 and Xbox One.
This isn't ideal overall to leave it plugged in for one or maybe two games if someone plays two
It isn' ideal to "force" people to buy a keyboard to participate but Smartglass can work if its not on the main UI

Your argument makes no sense....
What does any of that have to do with text chat in eso?
Are you implying that the game can't have it because it wasn't designed for keyboards??
Lol eso can add text chat. AND you are desperately trying to argue points that hold no weight.

Hmmm now if someone could just come up with a way to do this
Woah....sorry if this was confusing in how I typed it
The proposal is meant to be understood as in-game but not on the game-play UI as a compromise.
The social menu is the game social menu where group, guild, etc are situated.
This was be another item and in such, remove aany button limitations and open this up so someone can have a larger area to follow conversations with multiple options such as.
-text size

@NewBlacksmurf- Ive been reading this thread and thinking about this.. The one thing I think we can both agree on is it does seem to me as well that controller mapping on Xbox is already pretty full (dont know about PS4 as I dont own or play it)..
So building on what you started, what if one could enable the text box through the social menu, and it could be set up through there as to area, guild, group, whisper etc, set text size etc-- BUT when closed, an on-screen text chat box would appear in the corner so one could still play the game. Then if one felt the need to text or reply to someone, they could return to the social menu to do so. Basically the box on the game screen would be view only, and interaction or adjustment to it would have to be done in the social menu...Oh and would have to include zone chat, I dont know what your issue is with that, but its my main reason for wanting text chat. This would be a compromise I guess I could live with..

Basically like your idea but also visible on screen (not only bubble) maybe just for everyone in your group. Because I actually tried using the bubble chat stuff in a group once and it was very disappointing.
Did you see the other idea about in the social menu...adding text chat?
Text Chat should not be hidden in menu's.
Please suggest another proposal then....
*having it as seen on PC has already been shot down by the devs so....I think its worth coming up with alternative ideas for discussion.
please share with the community
lower left screen, semi transparent when not in use and have it minimizable. easy easy stuff wont effect anyones game play.
do you get mad when you loot stuff and text shows up in the lower left corner showing what you looted?
same thing but it will just be in a text box that wont effect your gameplay at all since it will be semi transparent and minimizable :P
plus it will add in tabs so hopefully they will add in a battle report tab where you can see how much XP you get, how much healing you did and how much damage you did. like a real MMORPG
See, here's the real problem.. You guys want to .make this a game that it's not. Text chat, DPS meters.... this isn't that game. The majority of us are happy with it and don't want this stuff.
Actually the majority of us want text chat. This poll shows it.
You aren't a majority. The foum is comprised mainly of malcontents and perpetual whiners. People who enjoy the game by and large do not post here. If you think you have a majority in this it just shows how naive you are.

I too would be open to this. I think the best way to approach it would be to have communication in your chosen channels(no channels selected = nothing popping up on screen) displayed on-screen much like loot is now but lingering on the screen for say 15 to 30 seconds. The full chat menu would be pulled up by a controller shortcut - perhaps making right mouse click open the map and left pull up social on PS4 for example or having it as one of the social radial selections - and would display a lingering chat log identical to the PC on screen box.
Good stuff.
Edit: damage numbers and other such game generated information could be displayed in this quick access menu tab as well. This could satisfy those who have opposed receiving such detailed game info as well since it would be accessible to those who want it without cluttering the HUD of those who don't.

have all text chat options in the socal window
text chat on/off
channel tabs on/off
font size
font color even? guild one color, trade an other etc....
text chat window would be like on the the PC fades after 20-30secs of inactivity
activating text chat would either be by pressing "enter" on a keyboard or by pressing square on PS4 or X on Xbox One while in the quick chat/emote wheel window
linking items in chat via square on PS4 or X on Xbox One on item hilighted in your inventory, this would also open up text chat as well

respectfully, keyboards don't' just work like that on console.

Other USB on support: http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-one/accessories/usb-port-use

Here is what people are and were doing in the past (this still continues): http://www.usgamer.net/articles/how-to-use-a-mouse-and-keyboard-for-xbox-one-games
Keyboard works for Neverwinter on Xbox One ... read the entire thread here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Neverwinter/comments/34qpef/xbox_questions_about_chatting_with_a_keyboard/
Mira,
I have the game...this specific game was developed to allow the ENTER key to work when the USB keyboard was plugged in when the console is turned on.
So either leave the usb corded keyboard plugged in , use a wireless usb keyboard, or reboot after you plug the corded keyboard back in ... dont see what the issue is here?
The PS4 has 2 USB ports ...
No one is forcing anyone do to anything here ...
You can chose to use a keyboard or not, use smartglass or not, use the console virtual keyboard or not, just read text chat & respond in voice, or even just turn off text chat completely.
It's all about choice & options, just because it isn't a perfect fit for you doesn't mean no-one else would use or want it. The more options the bigger the appeal to a larger audience, the larger & stronger the in game community is, the better the game does as a whole, the more money ZOS can make so they can bring out more content to ALL versions of ESO.

Actually the pole shows we are the majority. There is no way around it.

I shall quote you on that.

You mean your poll demonstrates that people NOT actually playing on console will vote on forum polls. Your argument is silly and is being made by people whose opinion has no actual bearing on the console version.
Thanks for your input though.

I play on console and I voted.
Your just trying to argue for the sake of arguing.
