Console: Should text chat be implemented with the IC patch?

    Yes
Yes..but I will say that for myself, the game itself doesn't hinder me as the console and the relationships made via other games are situations where we bring friends and family as well as meet new friends so forming groups for encounters is no different in this game from any other console game online.
Yes it does. The fact that you aren't using Text Chat hinders how many people you'll potentially meet through text chat.
For the new to console folks, it takes time to build up a good friends list but because most games on console do not rely on a text chat meet n greet, the addition of such a feature is somewhat foreign to some and will affect the visual presentation on the screen. In some cases, that is a deal breaker in the console world.
No it isn't, and it never was.
Nor was this ever the case in any MMO.
The behavior on consoles should and usually is...hi new person...you're nice, today you're gonna meet XYZ of my friends as we want to do an encounter together. New firend meets more new friends and the exponential way this works as new friend 1 ends up with 3 new friends, so on and so forth eventually adding 10 - 20 new ppl. Everyone knows someone else and often times within the same game, many ppl have colliding circles of friends. The Xbox UI outside of the game also promotes friend list growth so....yeah....
The behavior is the same as any other gaming Platform. There's no difference.
Friends list - or prior interactions list on xbox (I'm sure PS4 has a similar thing) its just a invite via party chat and go.
Are there times that i want to do something and cant find enough ppl....SURE but that has little to do with text chat not being on the console.
Wrong, it has everything to do with Text Chat not being on consoles.
The larger issue with forming groups is the design and limited nature of the grouping tools on the game (regardless of platform) and there are opportunities for improvement. By adding text chat the behavior becomes (anti-usage of the games systems) and this overall is a negative impact as seen on PC which I'm in favor of preventing on console. Also, as we've seen, if something is not largely used then its not a priority to fix for Zenimax.

What Negative impact? has Chat ever had in other MMO's?
Anti-Usage? What's wrong with not using a Matchmaking system? And using different systems to meet up?

The grouping tools need a complete redesign and even the upcoming changes wont address those issues.
That's the issue specific to your question above.
Even if it worked perfectly It would still feel lonely, you also forgot Roleplaying and also how Text Chatting makes it much easier for people to communicate.
*FYI - I attempted to post a compromise in this thread as well as others for text chat overall on consoles.

That wasn't a compromise, that was an excuse.

    Comprise idea:

Instead of adding a text chat box (this I'm not in favor of and from the comments it seems that "text chat" is assumed as such by those who want the feature)....

can we all agree on adding text chat bubble and a text chat box within the social menu?

-I'm also not for a text zone chat but could fully support text chat bubbles (with item linking)

    Another idea is:
    On console only:
Open up text chat (not in a text box on the normal UI screen while playing but within a social menu)
-this would function, look and work just like the PC version of text chat with one exception. It's in the social menu

    Please comment, etc.
trying to compromise my opinions and hopefully at least get you all for text chat another official response from ZOs

*Ill post this in the other thread too*

I think this could work as a temporary solution and some people my find it enough. It still leaves those people looking for help in the middle of nowhere and in PVP with a weaker communication then if zone chat where to be added.

don't forget roleplayers and people who just don't have a good mic. USB keyboards are also much more affordable then a good mic.

How about some sort of quick chat option, similar to what already is implemented with the bubble text? Just a simple intuitive UI to quickly form basic messages e.g.
    LFG/LFM {DUNGEON NAME} {DIFFICULTY}
    WTS/WTB {ITEM NAME}
    Port to me/{LOCATION}

lmao! port to me/{location}. that would never work as how is someone gonna see that chat bubble on the other side of the map?

This would be worse than even area voice chat, because you would have to be looking directly at the person when the chat bubble popped over his/her head.

Hang on you are against text chat because it would be more efficient than the games current system which you just admitted needed work? My head hurts now.

And the group finder isnt there to ensure you dont need text chat. Its to go along side it. Like you know every current MMO.

I don't understand why there is resistance to having a text chat like pc does....

Every single response I have read that is against the idea makes no sense.

And why has there not been a response from the devs about this?

No, ONE of my personal reasons not to add it is because the intended usage of some users becomes their way of avoiding to use a built in system that needs a lot of attention.

See adding text chat box in zones, for some people, it adds value but for others it makes certain in-game systems preform even more poorly.

ie: Grouping Tools on the PC, now suffer from functionality AND suffer from months of people in zone chat telling others not to use it. LFG zone chat is not more efficient than a properly working grouping tool. In ALL MMO's a properly functioning grouping tool far outweighs any text chat efforts.

There are other system that become affected as well like Guild Stores, the forums for Guild recruiting, in addition to the affects it will have on the current voice chat.

I want to ask all the @ZOS Devs & anti-text chatters here a simple question.

Have you on the console ever tried to form / get in a group for VR content? Be it Craglorn quests, VR Dailies/Dungeons, or Trials?

I not talking about pre-made groups or on a test server or anything ... on the live server with the ONLY form of communcation is voice chat.

Come back afterwards & then try to tell us how great voice chat is & there is no need for text chat.

    Hi Mira,

Yes..but I will say that for myself, the game itself doesn't hinder me as the console and the relationships made via other games are situations where we bring friends and family as well as meet new friends so forming groups for encounters is no different in this game from any other console game online.

The grouping tools need a complete redesign and even the upcoming changes wont address those issues.
That's the issue specific to your question above.

*FYI - I attempted to post a compromise in this thread as well as others for text chat overall on consoles.

2 of the 3 things I posted isnt even IN groupfinder... Craglorn quests & Trials.

There is no other way ATM to form up/ get in a PUG for those other than spamming area voice chat or be LUCKY enough to have found a good guild that's very active in PVE.

As far as friendlists ... I guess I'm not the socal butterfly you are, granted I had about 60 "friends" playing ESO the 1st couple weeks, but now most have moved on or quit altogether & am down to around 16 or so that play.

*PS I'm still looking for an active DC PVE guild on PS4 NA*

The thing is the console version of ESO has built in roadblocks in grouping, finding guilds, trading, & just general socalizing that dont exist on the PC version & could be painlessly solved by just putting text chat back in.

You don't have use it if you dont want to, but at least it will be there if you need to.

not to mention i myself hate having things on my head. hats included, so i rather not have a headset strapped around my head or anything in my ear.

having a keyboard in my lap or off to the side where i can just pick it up and type is way more logical to me and would feel more comfortable for me too.

text chat its way better for everything. its why E-mails are in text, its why letters are in text. you have no idea how many times i listened to a voicemail on my phone only to not understand them because they were too quiet, background noise my side and theirs, thick accent.

    Agree with aaron

To add to this, doesn't matter if we have a new option or not. If a tool isn't working properly and/or isn't efficient enough, people won't use it regardless. So the comment of avoiding use of a built in system is inevitable. Having more options that are much simpler and known to work is usually the best option. This is why we need text for consoles.

Hell. I have the best luck spamming the quick chat "group up" in front of dungeons. I use voice chat and no one response at all. With the quick chat, people will start jumping in front of me.

Hang on you are against text chat because it would be more efficient than the games current system which you just admitted needed work? My head hurts now.

And the group finder isnt there to ensure you dont need text chat. Its to go along side it. Like you know every current MMO.

You have to be trolling. You can't be serious. I am having trouble believing that this is your actual view point.

LOL you must be new to these forums.

    I am new lol.

I would rather see just chat bubbles for console. That is good enough to trade and to form groups and join guilds. No need for global or zone chat when that would bring out the gold sellers.

It's gonna be hard for someone to see my chat bubble in the city while I'm asking for help at some world boss.

Then wait for people to run by like they always do with in a couple minutes or can you not wait that long? Thinking that a world boss is more important than keeping out gold sellers is quite hilarious.

LFG was probably a bad example as I agree people would starting to avoid the Grouping Tools like they do on PC.

Basically like your idea but also visible on screen (not only bubble) maybe just for everyone in your group. Because I actually tried using the bubble chat stuff in a group once and it was very disappointing.

Or having a text chat would solve those issues easily, but no you're always wanting what is less convenient for the majority.

Honestly, our game makers are being held hostage by the four guys here who keep insulting zos for not making the game exactly as they want despite being informed prior to release there would be no TeXt chat.

Start as many polls as you want.

    PS.
PC comments are invalidating any actual results you hoped to achieve.

First of all, learn to count, just in the page in which you put this message, I can count 9 different posters who voted yes to this poll. Second, about "being informed before release" you're wrong. I wasn't informed, becuse I'm not among the guys who spent 6 months prior to release to look for info about the game. Until release, ESO was not even close to having my attention. When I bought the game, I did the same kind of reading that the average gamer does. I read the playstation store description. The playstation store description doesnt mention anywhere that this game would be any different than the PC game. It did not mention anywhere that, contrary to every other mmorpg in history, it did not include text chat. If it did, maybe I wouldn't have bought it, but it didn't. I knew this game existed on PC so I assumed it was the same game.

That being said, I can't be among the same people who keep repeating since april, because in april, I wasn't even considering playing this. The game came out at the right time, while I was bored and had nothing to play, and so I bought it. Maybe I'm alone in my case, but I highly doubt it.

Among the 244 yes votes, let's say 50% are PC players (it's not even close to be the case i'm sure, but just for fun). You still come to 122 for and 58 against.

Now count that, among the 58 against, there are prople like me who are FOR text chat, but AGAINST having it forced for IC. But let's say I'm the only one (it's probably not the case but still, just for fun) you get to 123 / 57, over 66% of the votes.

Even though this poll is probably not accurate, it still gives a pretty good idea. I did ask in game. Ofcourse not in town where over 75% of the people have their mics turned off, but I did ask among my guild. NOT A SINGLE PERSON that i asked said that they are against text chat. ALL OF THEM said it would be a nice addition. including those among them who never played mmorpgs.

One last thing. Ever since I've had an HDTV and an HDMI graphic card, I've never been sitting at a desk to be on my PC... I've played FFXIV for 2 years on PC while lying in my bed, and playing with keyboard and mouse. Saying that playing with a keyboard other than at a desk is uncomfortable is only in your head, as I'm sure I'm more comfy lying in my bed than you are on your chair.

Oh you must be thinking that a bunch of PC players and a few console players on a forum should outvote the vast majority of players ACTUALLY playing on console instead of wasting time on a forum arguing for a niche issue.

Go ahead and type another copy block.

I'm going to go play ESO.

    Cheers.

ive tried that, ive waited at a world boss for 10 mins once no one ran by.

its quite hillarious you think they will have gold sellers at all when even PC doesnt have gold sellers.

try another poor reason why you think text chat shouldnt be added.

So you rather force people to use a BROKEN groupfinder, than have options to find groups via text chat etc...

I hate to bring up WoW, but it has a perfectly working group & raid finder people use all the time so it isn't laziness on the players part.

As far as i can see the only essential reason for text is for people who are mute. Apart from that there are other avenues for communication within the game for everything else.

Everything else is just personal choice. And you might find that the reason that in these discussions and polls that pro text chat is winning is because most users don't actually use the forums.........
