it's very likely that local Time Machine snapshots are using disk space, the amount of space they take up will be included into some displays of free available space, even if it's used. If you don't backup your machine regularly to an external HDD or NAS, OS X will automatically create and keep these local snapshots up to a certain percentage of disk space.

To free up the space these snapshots are using, please first make sure that you have a current, valid, and restorable backup of your machine. Then open Terminal, and type

sudo tmutil disablelocal

This will prompt for your password if you have an administrative account. Otherwise, you would need to change to an administrative account by using su <accountname> beforehand.

Using the tmutil command as above will turn off Time machine backups and delete all local snapshots residing in the folder /Volumes/MobileBackups (this might actually take a while). Afterwards, you can type

sudo tmutil enablelocal

to turn TM backups back on. You should always keep current backups of your machine to be safe in the event of hardware failure, and/or data loss or corruption. You can read more about Time Machine, its configuration, use, and inner workings here (#30 tells all about local snapshots).

Edit: please note that the minimum hard disk space requirements have been updated several times, they're currently sitting at 85 GB. The game's files themselves aren't that large, but the space is needed for updating/patching the game.
