The dyes are rewards for in game achievements. If in game achievements can be bought for money, they lose all meaning. Just say no to buying achievements in the crown store. I've been playing pretty much since launch and just recently completed my first set of monster trophies to earn the dye (other than dwemer which is 2 pieces and easy). If people can just go buy those trophy dyes, then the achievement that takes long enough you count it in months or years can be bought for less than the cost of a cheeseburger has only one viable path to achievement and that's with real world money.

I am talking mainly about the ones you get for just doing national story lines.
Like I said, I am leveling a character in AD just to get a certain color from a lvl-25 area.
Now, I will get that throgh normal playing during silver/gold, but why wait?
The color I want if just a"basic black"...it really should be one of the beginning color available, if you ask me.

Yeah, ones that come with a "title", or are for completing something like killing every trials boss, shouldn't be included, and should remain "special"...and I editted my OP to reflect this.

I am just talking about "basic" colors.
The colors stuff comes in naturally makes we want to vomit sometimes. (lol)

Okay, noob question: How hard are they to earn? I don't mind earning them so long as I don't have work for years and years.

Does anyone actually have ALL of them?

If you like green, purple, and pink...they are easy...just log in.

If you like black, red, and silver/true-grey...play through the entire game, and you will get them...eventually.

Of course, I am just being a smart-arse, but it seems this way sometimes.

And...did anybody else notice that just about every dye with "grey" in the name actually looks brown?
(No, I am not colorblind. Even my wife says they look more brown than grey.)

Same reason as before. It's an achievement that is earned in-game. That hasn't changed. Having a sense of accomplishment in completing something and being rewarded for it, an integral part of such games, is not something sold in a cash shop.

    1000 for all dyes?

    no

if they did that it would be closer to 5000 or even 6000... expect to pay out the ass.

the crown store isnt convenience, its pretty much a scam. pretty obvious with how they are implementing the consumables.

I wish we could tell what the dyes actually look like from looking at the samples...or, I wish we could "preview" them on our gear, so we KNOW which ones we want to work towards.

Does the Thalmor turn out to be just another grey, like all the others seem to?

The Op has a point with the storyline driven Dyes.

But if any other dyes linked to real achievements (by real I mean ANYTHING else linked to any achievment you dont get by completing the story or leveling)

Actually, even then, you get a decent black from the story and some off shades of grey from leveling.

No, Ive changed my mind, no dyes on the AH, its the only thing that could make me quit.

I can log on with no new content for (seemingly) months

I don't have an issue with putting things like dyes in the crown store, because they make absolutely no difference to character skill, or the ability to beat content, or any kind of stats.

The only way I see it being a problem is if they put all dies, including those tied to special achievements such as beating a very difficult raid or something, in the store.

But even then, it would only affect the butt hurt people who "earned" it.

I always love when people have this argument, "I earned this, so you should too"... So because we work, and have less time to sit on our arse playing a video game, we shouldn't get to enjoy the same aesthetic things as you.

    Nonsense.

The only problem I have with the current dyes is the fact that Legate Black (the best black) takes Alliance War rank 39 to unlock. You need to earn a total of 30,4 million AP to get there, with an average of 85k AP per evening that would take one year of pvp each and every evening to unlock it.

Hopefully the new update has new achievements and new dyes so we can further customize our gear.

I use my down time to grind toward my dye goals. It has made me consider doing activities I wouldn't normally have done.

I am primarily a solo PvE player so there are some activities and therefore dyes I know I'll never have. I don't begrudge anyone the color they have worked so hard to achieve, an in fact I smile with respect whenever I see the fruits of their labor. I do at times wish there were multiple paths to the same colors that required the same or greater amount of effort but by completing different tasks.

I think the diversity of features in games like this is what makes them the most colorful; solo and group PvE, PvP, Crafting, Fishing, Exploration, Achievement grinding, and even the forums. We don't all enjoy the same play style, but we generally like similar rewards that help us fashion our characters into the appearance we've envisioned for them.

Will the desire to have the best black in game drive me to Cyrodil for a year? I doubt it, because its not a play style I prefer.
Will I fish for a year to get a color I don't even care about? Probably, because its more closely aligned to my prefered play style.

So game breaking bugs, poor customer service and lack of content won't make you quit?

Yet, you'll quit because someone paid money to change the color of their armor? lol k

Also no one's asking for free dyes(which honestly shouldn't matter because it's a damn color). People simply would like to waste their money on something insignificant. Anything that doesn't have an effect on gameplay is fair play for the crown store in my book.

Either way you won't see me wasting money in the crown store for cosmetics. I'll stick with my moonstone white armor and my 10k gold brown horse until I unlock something else. But I'm not going to get mad if someone pays money to look "cool".
I'll definitely be jealous at the disposable income they or their parents have though lol.

i have allways said that tying the dyes to specific achevements was a bad move. because dying became very important after the fiasco with the skins/quality. where everyone that wasnt a vr+ level got nice gear and everyone else were shafted with bile green, puke yellow and mud brown as the stuff they have to wear for around 50ish levels

if achevements were so important, they should have proper rewards, not cosmetics that people want, but will never acheve if they suck at certain playsideds.
i suck bigger than the king of suck at a convention for sucking when it comes to pvp. i know it. anyone that sees me fight would know it too. so i agree with the person that said if there was a way to get all the dyes with *ether* pvp OR Pve so both sides could get it. that would have been fairer than forcing those who, like me, suck donkeys at pvp from takign up at least a useable slot on pvp from those who can at least, prove viable (ie, not total balista fodder like me)

i sugested metalic dyes for those high level pvp achevements, so the rest of us filthy mortals could at least have the mat versions to decorate our dirty hides with but ooh no, not allowed.

i still say that making a dye be tied to a specific achevement is bad. it only encourages certain types of player to do other activitys. the completionist types and those who actualy dont suck donkeys at things. those of us who do suck, we cant even hope to acheve it, so we just shrug and give up because its pointless (while like me, voicing our displeasure ether in game or on forums)

i dont mind people who are good at things like pvp and such having achevements and things to show off. i just still say it should not be dyes. it should be titals or armours or even special glows ect. i mean, who wouldnt love to have that special glow about their gear or wepon? i know that they had to alter the levels ect in wow for certain enchants because they were being placed on low grade wepons, just for the looks (discounting the twink gear stuff) so im prety sure players would (in certain cases) go for those as replacement achevements.

imagine getting a dark black or dark brown aura about your char for mastering vampire/warewolf or a red glow about you for emperor? a purple (octarine lol) style one for mastering magics and a golden one for warrior based (like the warriors guild) ect. much easier to actualy tell who has done what than with a dye, because different materials/armours dont all show dyes the same.

I get up at 6am for work and get home about 8pm. Yet I still have found time to clear all the PvE content in game and get those dyes and achievements. And, no, I do not play from 8:01pm to 5:59am. Maybe 2 hours a night. You can get these dyes with some effort, but nothing extraordinary. You can run in circles for years and never find an Imperial motif. It is just dumb luck. Selling that for cash is one thing. It just bypasses a time sink. The dye for refining 50 million pieces of ore? Time sink. Go ahead and sell that dye. But selling some of the rarer dyes that require completing difficult content is bypassing skill, not time.

But, why do we "earn" dyes when we don't have to "earn" the ability to make certain types of armor styles?
Because they are rewards for achievements. Rewards are earned not purchased.

This is obviously a false statement. Consider mounts; only a few can be earned in game through what we can call a game mechanics only due to lack of better terms. All the best mounts can only be purchased in the crown store.

Mounts are not rewards for achievements, not thus far anyway, so I don't see how the two relate. Mounts can be purchased with gold or crowns. Dyes can only be earned through completing achievements. They aren't the same thing.

That is the point. Mounts are not rewards for doing something in-game even though they would make very good rewards and more sense if they were. There is no reason why some noname of Koeglin Village should ride on lion. He shoud go on foot. If it was the Hero of Koeglin willage, that would be different matter, he could ride, well, at least on a cow.
Yet there is no mount-acquisition mechanics except for buying one of the basic for gold. Compared to e.g. racial motifs, which are rewards that are both earned or pruchased, mounts are purchase only.
Precedent is set . Instead of asking why should the rich have dyes just because they paid (they could even recieve exclusive dyes not in-game), we could ask why should freeloaders have dyes just because they did something in-game!!!
