But I have noticed that most NPCs that have the outfits you are talking about are in non-combat situations. Perhaps there was a little more realism in the minds of devs when creating outfits where they actually looks like they give protection.

I don't think the development goal was to make the game look too much like either Final Fantasy or for the most part any Asian MMO.

If we are talking realism here, I would contend that less is more.

Our characters aren't fighting on lines or creating shield-walls. They are going out expecting single 1v1 combat. In that situation, medium armor is the logical cap. IF you absolutely had to have heavy armor, then a sports-bra style breastplate with a bikini-ish style lower body. For everyone- men and women.

Gladiators had the right of it. Blades don't take much to slice you to ribbons, and big armor has to have big gaps in areas to let you actually move your joints... big gaps that blades fit in nicely. So rather than trying to wear tons of armor so the blows just fly off of you, the best option is to be fast enough to just keep away from the [SNIP] sword. Use the metal to protect the heart/lungs and groin areas. Keep everything else out of harm's way yourself!

None of this even touches the fact that you are an adventurer trying to swim or climb mountains. Try swimming with 200 pounds of metal on your body...

Everyone is saying how skimpy heavy armor is "unrealistic". To me... that's the ONLY realistic armor. It's the men, wearing their tank armor of stupidness, that is unrealistic for single person combat.

Every time I see a heavy armor character in an MMO, they look like that comedic trope squire who wants to go to combat but is too frightened/inexperienced so they throw on as much armor as they can find laying around and walk out all stiff to the field.

Heh, I guess it depends on which side of the coin you are looking from; every time I see this thread, I think of religiously extreme "Avoid impure thoughts! Women should be clothed from head to toe!" lines of thinking. =D
