Kind of confused with the crafting system

So first, if it helps anyone explain this, I came from WoW so if you cant relate in any way that helps (I know this game is different from WoW haha...).

So I have a lot of stuff in my bag, and I feel like I gotten a lot of items that I should at least be able to craft something...

But when I go try to make something everything is red and I am not sure what mats I need...yet I have all these materials in my bag...

I went to try to get a Black Smithing certificate, and I have to make an Iron dagger, I was able to make my iron ore into bars...but I can't figure out how to make a dagger or where the mats are.

And when I go to any other crafting bench, there is nothing I can do...

How can I make stuff?
Please vote in the console text chat thread so ZoS can see how many people want text chat

...and dueling in the dueling thread but personally I want text chat first...

I'm not sure which system you're playing on, but I know on XB1, there is an option when you first click on whatever station you which to use -- > Create --> There is a button that allows you two check one, two, or no boxes. The boxes help break down what you see. Box 1 being, show only items you can create that you have materials for, and the 2nd box being show only items you have the knowledge to create. I personally keep both boxes checked at all times.

Also you can craft with items and deconstruct items you have in your bank, so do be careful when you craft and deconstruct items.

At a crafting station press y (XB1) or triangle on (ps4), like the guy a few spaces up said, you can then tick two boxes to show items that you have the materials and the knowledge to create.

Depending on your race depends what style you can create items in. It is possible to learn the crafting styles of other races by finding or purchasing a racial motif (works just like a recipe).

Each racial style requires a different type of stone/mineral or whatever they are known as lol.
These can be purchased from npcs near crafting stations and cost 15G.

    So for example:

I am a Nord, so I automatically know the Nordic crafting style.
Crafting in the Nord style requires Corundum.

If I were to craft an Iron Dagger I would first need to find iron ore, which must then be refined in to iron ingots.
With the required amount of ingots and the correct stone ie. corundum I can make the dagger, or whatever item I fancy.

Things are complicated at first, but you soon get the hang of it

I was aware you could deconstruct items in your bank, but not craft items in your bank. That's interesting. I need to take a second look. Does that option exist with guild banks too? That would save me a lot of running around.

No. If you think about it, it would probably create more problems than it solved, with people not knowing they were using the guild's resources instead of their personal items.

Hahaha so true, and I have access to 4 guildbanks, it would be a nightmare. I got enough problems remembering to put items in the right guildbanks already.

I think your issue is likely what thornboosh said above. You are probably missing the style stone. You need 1 style stone for each item you craft.
