There is never going to be nonconsentual pvp. I know they talked about enforcers in the justice system. I think the reason its delayed so long is they cant figure out how to stop folks from camping the refugee areas and ganking anyone who comes along.

I would like to see duels/arena/smaller scale PvP in ESO. That being said, I would like to say this:

Ya know, there are plenty of hardcore PvP MMORPGs out there right now. Lots of them. Many of them still have "loot your victim" systems. Plenty of them are "survival of the fittest".

https://www.darkfallonline.com/ is just one of many.

Yet people that reflect on games like that with some romantic sense of nostalgia still come to games like this instead. They avoid the very games they seem to desire in order to play games that clearly do not match their tastes, then complain about how soft the gaming genre has become.

It isn't soft. You are just playing the wrong games. So for those of you that want to play an MMORPG that allows you to loot people you kill in an open world PvP environment, I ask you this: Why don't you?

There is no way today's players would be able to play an old UO style game. I loved it back then just walking thru the forest and cutting trees then out from behind a tree some dude would attack and you would start fighting right after he made you jump out of your seat. Loved those days. But to ask today's players to put up with losing everything on their body and bags would send they screaming that it wasn't fair and so on. Just wouldn't be tolerated by today's kids. Which means it wouldn't be a good money making market. Or games like Darkfall: Unholy Wars would be making tons of money.

I used to love those old mmos but to be honest we didn't really have many options back then, I personally don't miss that level of risk I play to relax and that type of gaming doesn't give me that. There is a reason that games like darkfall have such a small player base, most people don't want that type of experience and it's not just kids, I'm 38 played ultima, daoc etc and I can't say I ever liked ganking just didn't have a choice back then.

Loosing gear on death in current state of the pvp is just lol. Yesterday i was one shoted 3 times from lethal arrow, it wouldnt be so bad if not the part that i had over 30k spell ressist and 28k armor and still got hits over 20k... Yeah i think those are the players that miss the open world pvp the most "im so awesome, i love pvp, im so good i can insta gib anybody" :) The reason we have no penalities while dying in pvp is impossible to achive balance. Now its just "lol this is sick but who cares, ill just go other way" but if u could get one shoted as a heavy armored tank and loose your stuff it wouldnt be so whateva...
I'm done with this game because of ZOS pushing us into Vengeance, because they don't know how to fix Cyrodiil.

Right. My personal opinion has always been that it isn't about the mechanics for them. It's about the prey. Easy targets. Most of the "PvPers" that wish games like ESO were open world PvP with lootable players aren't interested in fighting other players that are just as good or better than them. They aren't interested in fighting people that are eager and prepared for a fight. They are interested in attacking unskilled or unprepared players that are just trying to quest in peace. What they miss is populated games with a lot of easy targets. And THAT is hard to find now.

So while I do support the idea of arenas or duels or small scale pvp in ESO, I do not support open world PvP here, because the vast majority of the people playing this game want consentual PvP or no PvP at all.

Consent being the key word there.

You all just simply DON'T GET IT :)
PvP in ESO has its own original style and there will be no arenas or duels because ZOS made it that way.
If you don't like it ...it's not game for you then.
For majority it's perfectly fine to have PvP as battle experience that really feels like we're involved in a real WAR.
Just stop complaining and play or quit ...it's THAT simple.

All those hardcore 'if you die there should be a penalty' people out there, good news, you can totally do that yourself! You die? Delete a piece of gear and donate some gold to the nearest random. Crazy, I know. Want something more intense? If you die delete your character and start over!

You can impose your own consequences of dying without having to make everyone else suffer. While dying in ESO is quite trivial, I don't feel it should be changed to appease a select few.

In terms of PvP, the justice system will be a thing and who knows, they might implement duelling and arenas.. But I agree, as it stands PvP is quite lacking, but so is PvE so eh.

I have been playing Arma 3 Epoch recently and it is so different.

Your heart starts pumping when you hear NPCs near you or radio chatter. Your heart really pumps when you see several enemy players drop out of a helicopter near to your location.

Why? Exhilaration, rush. If you die, you lose everything and start again.

Risk! = satisfaction of winning (and reward of taking their gear).

Devs in general really must stop listening to these people who want gentle happy questing with no risk. There is no achievement. Instead there is 'WOOT LEVEL 10 have a badge'. Such irony that they call these things 'achievements'!

I dearly wish that this game would become more risky. It is so much more enjoyable to have your emotions piqued in some way.

I suggest that the PVE zones stay the same 1-50 so that the casual players (who don't appear to actually want any risk) have something to do, the Vet zones (after removal of vet ranks) become harder again (and optional because no vet ranks) and then Cyrodiil becomes more like DAOC with full loot pvp and removal of the damned ezmode aimbot.

Obviously some other tweaks would be required for TTK and defence generally and there would need to be more actual reason to hold onto keeps - we should be able to actually impact the strength of keeps so that they don't pingpong daily (or nightly) - a la DAOC.

In fact, perhaps they could leave 1 server of Cyrodiil as it is currently and then give us a hardmode server with proper pvp mechanics. That way everyone wins. It would be very interesting to see the population differences.

    That would be... amazing.

Bet folks would be more cautious then.

If by "cautious" you mean go play a game based on entertainment and not sado-masochism, then I think you're right.

The problem with that sort of "lose everything" system, is that only ~5% of the global gamin population would consider it "fun" and rewarding. People just aren't that masochistic where they invest hours a day for months, even years just to risk it all on some opportunistic zerg.

Also, that sort of game design has no place in an Elder Scrolls game. There is simply no "social contract" for that sort of thing. It isn't what people feel they are "signing up for" when they sign on to play an Elder Scrolls game.

TES games have been traditionally about open world exploration, questing and collection, and modding, of course. Just like people don't go to a wine tasting festival to get assaulted by no-holds-barred naked wrestling.

You do know there's a reason that no major MMORPG has the type of "hardcore PvP" you are claiming is brilliant don't you?

    No?

    Well I'll tell you.

There isn't such a game because not enough people would play it to make it financially viable.

Wildstar launched with a fixed resolve to make PvE genuine hardcore, because polls showed players didn't want a "comfortable" gaming experience and a small very loud minority said "its too easy, everything is too easy, make it harder".

It took Wildstar less than 12 months to realise that listening to that very loud minority was appallingly bad business practise, because they were losing players faster than a bucket with a hole loses water.

If I want a genuine hardcore PvP challenge I go play a game that is designed for that - usually some variant of 1st Person Shooter.

You are never (NEVER) going to get that type of PvP in an MMORPG because an MMORPG is... ...and I know this may take some time to sink in, or come as a shock to some people... ...a very different type of game, with a very different type of audience.

If ESO ever introduced open-world PvP I would instantly uninstall and never look back. Its bad enough I am forced to play with the e-peen-wagglers in Cyrodil just to complete some PvE stuff; and it, if I am being honest, a major reason as to why I am questioning my commitment to this game.

I am happy to PvP when I want to PvP; making me doing when I don't is a sure fire way of never seeing anymore of my money.

And I will promise you 10 times more players feel that same way than want your vision of PvP.

PvP is a minority participation activity in MMORPGs. LOTRO figures showed that less than 20% of players engaged with PvMP at all, and less than 10% did so with any regularity.

And that is why any MMORPG game company that listens too much to the often very loud, but always very small, PvP community is heading for car crash.

I'm all for more PVP content, assuming it doesn't get in the way of new PVE content which takes priority for 80% of players.

    I would love to see:
    • The ability to duel anyone, anywhere. How could an MMO launch without this?
    • Smaller scale "battlegrounds" and arena style instances.
    • Cross-faction zones where anyone can go, and where you can CHOOSE to flag yourself as PVP.

The last one, I think is one major area that ESO falls short. Something that added immensely to immersion in WoW was the cross-faction nature of most later level zones, where each faction had their own "camps" and quest hubs, and would run into players from the other faction on their travels.

Being able to flag yourself or not on a PVE server gave the OPTION to have more PVP if you wanted it, without forcing people that didn't want it to endure it.

Just make it an immortal-guards-kill-you-on-sight offense to engage in PVP in quest hubs or towns, and make quest NPC's un-attackable, and it would be fine.

In my opinion corpseloot/permadeath has no place in an MMO. I admit it would make griefing more fun, but well. Not gonna happen in any top MMO ever again, I hope. Getting the gear you want takes too long to make this enjoyable. It's not like I don't care about winning and loosing, just because I'm not at the risk of loosing all my gear.

Isn't Arma 3 a simulation? I don't think that you need to grind dungeons for weeks to get the equipment you want.

Those "tweaks" would essentially mean building the pvp system again from scratch, and you know how likely this is

I say let's wait till next month and see what they have planned of the imperial city. Don't see how you can have an arena without small pvp battles inside the arena. I would like the option for people to be able to attend and watch the fights, maybe even have to pay gold/alliance points to attend where the gate gets split between the 2-3 guilds being represented with the gate being split accordingly between 1st 2nd and 3rd. And maybe have champions of the arena that gets buffs like the emperor, just not nearly that crazy of buffs. And you have to defend ur title every day to stay champion. Just a thought

I played UO from 1996 beta to 2003. I was the leader of one of the largest anti-pk guilds on the great lakes server. You kill innocents you would answer to me. I used to take the PK's gear and put it on my vendors for 10 times what it was worth. I would take your head and display it on my front steps. So ya you COULD attack innocents. Once you turn grey or red tho you were history if you showed your face.

Lol I was on Great Lakes and Pked all the time. Never ran into any anti-pk guilds that were any good. What was your characters name and guild? Pkers always had big fights in dungeons and occasionally some newb anti pk guild would gate in with their matching color uniforms and dex characters and get owned by the real guilds like GoD, Force, and many others which i now forget.
