Harm in leveling multiple weapons early?

I know that at 15 people begin leveling a second weapon for their back bar - but does the second weapon only level while you earn xp while having a weapon skill on your active bar at the time? Or will it level if it is on the back bar?

How badly would a low level character set himself or herself back by trying out different weapons? How difficult is it to catch up?

On my Khajit NB I started using a second weapon the moment the slot opened up. For me it's dual wield and bow. I see no harm in trying different weapons out. Some things to remember are that the skills on the active bar you have when you turn in quests all get XP, regardless of using them or not. It is technically possible to level a skill to 50 without ever having used it. Also, while fighting only the skills you have equipped and weapons you are using gain XP. As for catching a weapon up, it depends I suppose. I reached level 50 and started to level 2 hand just because my dw and bow are maxed and it seem to go pretty fast. I just slot one two hand ability, some of my key damage abilities from class lines, and keep questing and going on about my way. I don't imagine your goin to gimp your character by experimenting with some weapons, and to shoul experiment. Half the fun of building a character is doing if you own way.

There isn't any harm in levelling multiple weapons early, in fact it'll save you time later, there is more than plenty skillpoints available in the game, by time you teach 50/VR you'll have maxed lots of lines out, plus having many weapons levelled means you can adapt your gameplay on the run without being restricted to your chosen weapon set

Sorry I realize that may not have been clear in regards to your question... the abilities on your back bar (the one not currently active) do not gain XP. Only your active bar does. This applies to both fighting and quest XP.

To follow up on what others have written: If you are on PC you can use an add-on to "store" skill bar configurations and have one be a "leveling bar" to use whenever you turn in quests. That can help make the most out of quest XP gains including leveling up various weapons.
