Ive changed my mind on the subject, please do add a chat box.
Why? Since people apparently are scared to use such alien technology as a mic for whatever reasons like shyness, social distubances, rp (I can understand the rp issues regarding female characters wich would definatly show that "Tessytess the kahjiitgurl" & 99% of them are infact guys and not girls).
Everyone should have a decent shot of playing the game no matter how strange you are and what you prefer.

I'm a guy playing a female toon & I want text chat ... It's not because I want to hide the fact that I'm a guy or anything, in fact I like & use voice chat in groups & dungeon runs.
BUT, I freaking hate voice area & guild chat ... text chat is much better for those, as well as for zone chat for selling /buying, looking for people to group with for dungeons, dolmans, world bosses, asking questions & helping out others, etc...
I'm sorry but text chat box is one of the most annoying things on Neverwinter please don't bring that crap to ESO. For you all that cant find friends or people to play with try joining an active guild there are at least 20 pages on the NA Xbox forums alone with some threads dedicated to just making friends. Drop your GT on a thread and watch them come to you. Seriously though I encouraged all my guildies to participate in guild chat and I haven't gotten one negative complaint. We enjoy the no hassle communication while doing any and everything. ZoS is working with silver and turning it into gold. Adding text chat is just a down grade.

Yup deaf and mute people are scared to use a mic....By all means. Keep throwing out futile and moronic reasons why a Text Chat option on Console is a bad thing and VOIP only is a good thing.

You make it sound like the majority is deaf and mute? You got official numbers on that?

You got an official number on all those 'weirdos'? Thought so.
Would like to see what smart-ass , and juvenile excuse the speakers for not wanting anyone to have the text chat option have for leaving out the deaf and mute players of the world who for years have used mmo's as a place that they can be a part of.
I posted this in another thread , and suggest everyone take 2 mins out of their life to watch this segment of a video documentary , and see why text chat is an option needed.
This fine fellow , a member of the gaming community for years who writes on gaming sites like the Escapist and many other blogs , is kept from playing because of the no text chat decision.

Try being a GM of 2 guilds in this game, with over 700 people. Unmanageable with single channel voice chat.

What exactly is wrong with voice rp in comparison to text rp? I'm no rp or mmo expert but I see zero difference (aside from hearing/speaking as opposed to reading/typing obviously). I'm genuinely curious as it was mentioned more than once.

Perhaps this game is designed will smaller, more communal guilds in mind. Personally, my preference is to stay away from giant, faceless guilds who will take anybody & play with a select group of folks where everyone knows everybody & enjoys their company.
But, hey - to each their own.
I'm really impressed that there's no chat window. I'm not sure it means a lot, but I think text chat is really inefficient. ESO is one of the first to try not having it, and I think they did well.
Benefits:
- UX wise it's much easier to process voice than it is to read and process text.
- Removes a large UI element that can be a burden on display space.
- Adds a reason to actually be near one another.
- Don't have to deal with gold spam.
- Moves the industry forward! Death to the chat window
If I could suggest some changes though, I'd probably do something like~
- Add a quick means to switch between voice channels.
- Add a quick means to mute the last speaker, accumulated mutes result in that person being silenced for a period of time with a notification that people are not enjoying their mic.
- Try adding a filter that can detect long incoherent noise and mute it, I don't know if any tech like this exists.
@Sidney I think you've got a very valid point, but given the platform it's antithetical to the concept of simplicity and stream lined use. Adding text chat then splinters the community and forces some people to utilize a feature they aren't particularly interested in using.
Consoles are certainly not known for their broad accessibility in terms of communication, and text chat is not a common feature to the platform. If you are looking to participate in a community built around text, I would direct you towards the PC / Mac version of the game.
