How to level skills

Coelton911
How do you level your skills in eso? Like for me "lava whip" does that skill level up based on how many times you use the skill? Or does it level up when you kill stuff AND have it slotted on your action bar? Because armor seems to level up just because you have it equipped right? An explanation on this would be great. I tried looking it up on google.. It just pops up "how to power level" etc..

For specific active skills, they level up by being on your skill bar while you earn XP. It doesn't matter if you use the skill or not, as long as it's on your bar.

For skill lines, they level up differently depending on the line.

For weapon and armour skill lines they level up based on whether you've got the item in question equipped while earning XP (and for armour it will level up faster the more pieces of it you're wearing), and they will level up faster if you have active skills from those skill lines on your bar (again, the more active skills from that line on your bar, the faster the skill line levels up).

For guild skill lines, they level differently depending on the guild. Fighters guild levels based on the number of daedra or undead you kill. Mages guild levels based on the lore books you find. Undaunted levels based on group dungeons done and certain dungeon-related achievements.

Class skill lines level up based on the number of active skills from that skill line on your bar while you earn XP.

    What about Soul Magic?
Do I have to actually Trap souls?
Because I am at level/rank 2 and it seems to have stalled.
Do I have to buy/find empty gems and fill them to raise it further?
To tell the truth I just started watching that particular skill line. :/

Soul Magic skill line actually goes up by completing the Main Questlines. Soul trapping also raises this skill line, but not as much as the Main. At least it did for me.

It's the Main (Prophet's) Quest line... Yukian is correct.

Mine only went up very little by soul trapping... it is too expensive to level it up this way in the game, unless you know where to steal soul gems without getting caught and that is my secret I tell no one.

Also this skill line only has 6 levels.. and Defeating Molag Bal at the end of the Quest line should give you that 6th level.

The majority of skills gain a set amount by being on your active (current) bar when you earn XP's (writs, quest turn in, exploration discovery, killing stuff).

The skill lines themselves gain based on the same, but are multiplied by the number of skills from the line you have on said bar.

(If you have 3 skills from Destruction staff, and one each from two other lines, Destro Skill line will go up three times as fast.)

You can also get bonus points for traits that will cause armor/weapon lines to advance faster. (Training)

Quirk: You can have any skill on your active bar, even if it's not one you can use at the moment and it will still advance. This is useful towards L50 when you have your primary skills maxed and want to advance alternate skills. Simply pick a spare spot (even one at a time) and place the skill on the bar.

For example, you can have Healing Springs on your bar when you have a Dual wield weapon setup. Though you won't be able to use the skill in combat, it will still increase until it's maxed.

Also a good idea (especially when your skills become maxed) to have a 'Quest turn in' skill/gear set. (You can do this easily with Wykkyd's outfitter/macros) to get the most bang for your buck. You can have alternate armor weight's you don't normally use once your get to max on your normal setup.)

Caveat: Don't forget to change back to your original gear/skills or expect to rez.
Just because you don't like the way something is doesn't necessarily make it wrong...

@Ace-2112 , all good. You can still swap them out manually and swap them back after. It just takes a little longer, that's all.

Also, don't forget about your Ultimates - swap out to another when that one's maxed as well.

(You can also do morph-only respecs and advance the other morph of a skill. I highly recommend you do this once your main skills are morphed and maxed, as it's inexpensive and will let you see which morph truly suits your playstyle more.) (You won't lose any skill gains on the other should you ever choose to go back)
