Why so many invisible enemies?

I'm not sure if this is coupled with the invisible NPC issue (I get that too, will have mission marker or say talk to someone that isn't even there). In areas though, I will randomly start being attacked and there is nothing I can even do. They show on the top as red dots, but there is nothing there. Pretty lame

Usually doing AoE dmg allows you to hit them. You can't see their health pools but you can at least put out a few AoEs until the incoming damage stops.

EDIT: i.e. Elden Hollow dropping down from the bridge before heading to last boss sometimes there is one npc that is invisible, encounter this a few times in my groups.

enemy's are npc's too. NPC means non player character. So this are both friendly or unfriendly npc's. So yes, it has to do with the known bug wich will be fixed in the next patch (accordign to the known issues thread)
