Once burned, people aren't going to forgive and forget....
The experience of FFXIV shows clearly you're wrong, it is possible to rescue a dead horse (dog?) and make it into a huge success .. FFXIV V2 has players numbers ZOS can only dream about, and at least double (likely more) than ESO had at its height last year.

Now, I have no expectation whatsoever ZOS can pull that kind of turn-round, but Square Enix's efforts paid off hugely to the point where FFXIV V2 is massive and still a subscription-only game.

As far as mainstream Media Coverage, I have seen two, yes a whole TWO adverts on TV here in the UK, I was actually very, very surprised to see them!!

They were on ITV I think and I live in London, so as ITV is split into regional areas they may not have been country wide. They were however prime time.

As far as people searching ESO goes, have people who have pre-ordered already got access to the Forums? If they have there would be no reason to search anymore, even the main site would give you all the info you could need and ESO's facebook page is regularly updated.

Slightly off topic:- I've just been away for a week, some where with no internet......

When I got back yesterday I had a quick read of these forums and then immediately went back to Witcher 3.....

I have not logged in to ESO still and atm have no burning desire to do so!!

This from a person who was previously online for many hours everyday, I really hope consoles are a success BUT the lack of new content has made me quite happy to play elsewhere and I'm sure I am part of an ever growing group of people :(
    When people say to me........
"You're going to regret that in the morning"
I sleep until midday cos I'm a problem solver!

Why would someone google it nowadays when I have the main website in my favorites? All the news is there. Not much news though but I used to google it before 2014 for news. Now that it's released all the news is on main page.

Because the popular something is the more times that thing is going to be searched, not only via google but on youtube (i.e. people watching gaming videos) as well as more data fetched from third party sites via search engine bots. Just because you have something in your favourites and don't need to search the web for that term doesn't mean nobody else is.

    1. Forgetting console and focusing on PC is the worst advice I've seen in a while. That won't save it, otherwise they wouldn't have to focus so much on console to begin with. If this was PC only I think it would be in even worse straights behind the scenes and wouldn't last much longer. PC doesn't have the population. I'm sticking with PC version myself and really really wish we had new content right now, but that's not the way to go at this point unfortunately.

    2. That's a very limited gathering of information to make a decision on. Not counting the fact that console release isn't "release" and probably shouldn't expect the same hype build, there is also E3 coming around the same time console launches and the game will probably get a push from that. Not to mention a good portion of console players are more casual and probably don't endlessly search for information they already know on a game that is coming out (as most die-hards already have the game).

Console launch is a big deal for the game and will determine its future, and that's been the case all along.

Mmos seem to follow a strict path

Subscription - (b2p - f2p) - basic buy able items - pay to win items.
Sometimes it works better as a f2p game like swtor is now one of the highest generating mmos.
This particular mmo is only surviving because of the Elder Scrolls skin.

I actually dont mind swtor especially because i have a huge gambling habbit. :D

ESO shouldn't be advertising right now.
This game is still too buggy.

They need to solve all the issues Angry Joe and Francis, highly respected game critics gave them before doing anymore advertising.

Main issue they gave them, ESO is too buggy.
Current state, ESO is buggy (AVERAGE 1-5 bugs a day)
GW2 (AVERAGE ZERO bugs a day)
Other games (AVERAGE ZERO bugs a day)

I agree the game is too buggy, however I would ask that ESO not try to placate people like that. They aren't "highly respected" by everyone ;) There are 101 fixes found within these forums, and I'm sure just as many through feedback. I'd rather they listen to their players who are actually here playing then a few people who made a name for themselves acting ignorant on the internet.
If options weren't necessary, and everyone played the same way, no one would use addons. Fix the UI!

Highly respected... lol. Angry Joe in particular deliberately did a hatchet job with his review because he was "angry" over all the flack he got for his awful "Wah, it's not co-op Skyrim, mah!" preview. So he deliberately set out to find and feature bugs while his GF giggled about them... yes.... highly professional.

It's hilarious that the two biggest amateur reviewer clowns on youtube have achieved "highly respected" status with some. Probably with the same crowd that just "knows for a fact" that reviews at Massively (RIP) and MMORPG.COM, the two sites dedicated to covering MMOs are corrupt and paid by the companies.

While I am more than happy to enter yet another discussion about what P2W is, for sake of brevity I will just remove Rift, DCUO and GW2 from the list as these can not even pretend to be anything else.
WOW has been selling expansions (and again I am ready to discuss why is it P2W but shall pass for now), has had a cash shop of sorts and, most importantly, started to sell levelled up characters at some point. It's loosing whatever integrity it had and compulsory subs are not going to obscure the smell of decay.
FF14 may have relatively timid cash shop but has it, which proves that the devs lack integrity and willpower to resist making easy money. There is no way this could have happy end.
Which leaves FFXI. All I know is that the game exists, so I will go to make research and return. Or, if it indeed is not P2W, I may not return. Does it run on Linux by chance?

PS: EVE is often mentioned in similar lists. I think it has some cash shop and PLEX money laundering scheme. Also, it has some rather disturbing leaked pdfs.

I also keep finding ESO advertisements on the cheap banners of random websites, but I don't remember 4/4/14 getting that much hype 14 months ago.

This is the Google Trends result of > elder scrolls online < since 2013. You can notice a peak in april 2014, when ESO was released.
The levels reached today, even if they are slightly increasing are only reaching about 20% of that peak.

This is the Google Trends result of > Tamriel Unlimited < since January. It reached a peak last month but it's back to a normal level now, which means it's not increasing in spite of the huge media coverage.

I personally don't see this game being around too long, which is a shame... especially with "Elder Scrolls" attached to the name. There is so much not in this game that should be, that it's gonna be impossible for people to want to devote their time to, with better games getting released. Had they released this last year, with absolutely 0 competition on consoles, it would've done a ton better, even if it had a shaky start, there was literally no games out last year until Destiny arrived (minus FFXIV). They shot themselves in the foot. It's a decent game, but it's not even gonna hold me over until Fallout 4 arrives, I'm thinking of jumping back on Dragon Age or going back to FFXIV unfortunately. And what's really sad, is that the people who were behind the other Elder games, didn't have anything to do with this game, but it's gonna get lumped in.
I've seen 0 coverage of this game, I'm surprised IGN even reviewed it. They didn't hype, or have any live streams for it that I saw, that usually accompany a big release... and an Elder Scrolls game, is a big name release. I think they just grouped it in with the PC, and figured that since they already devoted so much negative time to it last year, what's the point? Pretty sad because I was so pumped for this last year, and was insanely disappointed, I remember being fairly mad about it. Oh well.... it still isn't worse than Destiny.

What would help is bringing back quality MMORPG basics like the UI, and new zones on a regular basis  :
    http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/183978/
People come online, and their first impression of the game right now is seeing the almost-not-there UI that doesn't do anything but the very bare basics and feels unfinished :(. People running around that all look like npc's... it doesn't give a good vibe for your first hour of gameplay which is critical to retaining new players!
