Why are Treasure Maps terrible?

I tested this on the PTS. With the treasure hunter passive in the Champion system the loot changes differently. This is also in a lower zone since I had to test in area where I knew where a lot of chests spawn at.

Without the passive all chests give you green items and it is chance to get set item.

Opening up a simple chest gives you green items and some times I get a set item.
Opening up a Intermediate chest gives you blue items and sometimes get a set item.
I have not open a advanced chest yet.
    Here is open Master chest.

    Screenshot_20150426_054117_zps2p00pvfj.png
It did not give me purple items or gold items but it does give me two different green set items and a blue item.

I found a treasure map in one of chest here is it contents.

    Screenshot_20150426_053557_zpsocri2w4v.png
Here it actually gives me a purple item and a green item set and a blue item.

So it is good that this perk changes the loot. It just too bad that this passive is a 75 point unlock.

Thank you for testing this, very informative. But I stand fast on my statement that reward vs investment is terrible. ZoS can you please address this?

For some reason loot seems lackluster in this game compared to WoW, EQ, AC and AC2. There were motes that were very rare and used in crafting that dropped in AC2 and Rare mounts/pets that dropped off mobs in WoW.

Here chests give you... green vendor trash. Treasure maps give you... green vendor trash. You go to a deep dark dungeon pick a difficult chest and get... green vendor trash.... Find a long lost treasure map search all over dig it up open the chest and... green vendor trash.

If you are lucky you will get a blue or purple but its still junk, no set bonuses nor anything rare.

There's no random chances to get awesome loot anywhere and it just seems boring.

Question: Why are Treasure Maps terrible?

Answer: Because ZoS HATES solo players.

Treasure maps are content that can be completed solo, and ZoS hates solo players with a passion. They're never going to make anything really desirable that is also accessible to solo players. Every single juicy reward in ESO is deliberately gated behind group-only or solo-impossible content. Wise Mage set? Group-gated. Valkyn Skoria? Solo-impossible. The list is endless.

Why does ZoS hate solo players so much? I have no idea.

Yeah understandable but the scary thing is if they actually make treasure chests have rare and unique items. We will start having even more threads about how other wait for players to fail getting treasure chest and in up losing out on cool items. It will be rise of the Treasure chest Trolls They will hide, wait, and watch you fail and then they will swoop in and gobble up your future loot.

Okay I stand corrected on something, these maps DO reveal chests that drop sets HOWEVER, they are limited to the ZONE not the level of character opening them....

It should be whichever is greater.

I know, it's very disappointing, I wish they at least had a CHANCE (however small) to drop some form of BoE unique pet or a fragment of something powerful, ANYTHING but zone level loot.

If they even had a chance of dropping Character scaled level Dreugar King Slayer Greatsowrds that would be nice...

You guys realize that if chests were made with better loot people would farm heck out of them. Then people would complain about how items found in chests should be a lot harder to get and there shouldn't be as many chests. Then zos seeing reaction once again nerfs chests to try make people happy. But again people are now angry cause drop rate was changed of chests zos doesn't like its player base and then people will try to connect some sort of imaginary dots in their head. That zos did this to make people buy something in the crown store.

Destiny did a similar stupid thing. They placed "Gold Chests" throughout the worlds that were sorta like achievements to go find. However, by the time you got them all they only had dumb greens and a beginner sparrow...BOOO!

No, it shouldn't. How else are we going to get low level sets to sell to other players?

They scale to the player in Craglorn (up to V11 or V13) and in Cyrodiil. So both options exist in the game and I think that's a good balance.

I would like to see a system where you can take an item that isn't part of a set and upgrade it to one of the crafting sets by taking it to the craft station for that set. I have looted several blue and purple pieces of gear and they are basically just deconstruct garbage to try to get an upgrade material from them. I'd love to be able to take a purple weapon that I looted and turn it into something useful that matches my current set bonuses.

A vast majority of what I find, and pretty much all quest rewards, are basically junk.

The CE maps for the starter islands are very good for a new character as they usually drop several blue items, which will last you for quite some time when starting the game.
Other than that, the treasure maps are only good for the hunt of finding the spot, not the loot.

ZOS really missed out on a HUGE opportunity here ...

the only treasure maps worth it are the survey maps from the dailies. there is literally no reason to go looking for the regular ones, the rewards are not worth it.

Even with the mod that marks the location of whatever map you have, its just not worth trekking out to the X, you could get better rewards from killing same level enemies than you could from map chests.

no.... they don't. you just expect too much from a multi-player game. the maps typically contain "solo" gear because they are "solo-able", there for you didn't earn "group loot". i don't do them for the gear. sometimes its just an excuse to explore areas, have a change of scenery for farming resources, or just get sick of them in my inventory. if you don't like them don't do em. but don't *** about how "zos hates solo'ers" when soloers have driven them to make this game one big care bear game by fisher price kind of easy mode game play.

I don't mind the loot quality of treasure chests. As above seen you are able to increase that via champion system.

I would be bothered more to use those treasure maps, if there would be an achievement for them (Find all treasure maps in Deeshan as an example).

So it is good that this perk changes the loot. It just too bad that this passive is a 75 point unlock.

I had no idea this existed as part of the Champion system and I have to say I'm really disappointed. How does it even make sense that buried treasure magically gets better if you take this perk? WHY should that even be the case? There have been so many GOOD player suggestions for improving the treasure maps but once again ZOS has been completely deaf to player suggestions and instead gone and done something NO ONE actually wanted. This is right up there with the awful decision to tie DYES, a simple cosmetic of all things, to achievements and making all the best ones impossible to get except for a tiny handful of players. i 100% agree with it being tied to the champion system- spend a hundred points get better loot from chests....... yeah how about replacing that with something more in line with the champion system since its primarily a combat related system (my stance applies to the "get more resources from a node" passive as well). it is geared towards the dedicated players and not the "i play because it is currently cool to play" crowd. i ain't a big fan, but i won't waste time worrying about it.

the rest i would say is hog wash. if there is no incentive to do certain achievements, people aren't inclined to do them- players that don't play, are players that don't pay. dyes are kind of a silly reward, but to act like they have any malice against players that "can't" get them (these days that predominately means won't try to get them), is pretty weak logic. in the few parts that are heavily against the player, are typically irrelevant. its just a dye, i don't see the need to complain why they emperor gets some super cool dye that i can't have by virtue of my not trying or simply don't have the time to do it. i am a big completionist, so it erks me to high heaven that i know i won't get the achievement. i just suck it up and accept it, because it is what it is.

What I want to know is..where are all these chests that allegedly "have a chance" to drop a set item? I have opened hundreds and hundreds of chests and I don't think I have ever seen a set item. It's always green or blue junk. They don't even have traits IIRC which means they are utterly worthless except to deconstruct for a chance at improvement mats. Are these chests in Craglorn or Cyrodiil or what? Is this only from treasure chest maps or any chest in the game world?

You do occasionally find set pieces.

E.g. in your v10 zone, you get v10 Nightshade and Soulshine set pieces.

In Cyrodiil, you sometimes get set pieces from treasure maps scaled to your level: Way of the Air, Rage, Way of the Fire, and Martial Knowledge are the ones that I remember.

Heh, those maps became useless since loot from chests scale to territory level, but not char level as it was in past.
Kept my CE maps as many others here, hoping to open on max level, now it's only a waste of space.
(actually dug only usual treasure maps, they do scale to territory, never tried CE maps, just guessing they are the same)

They kind of do. If you put the map on a VR Character and go to a Gold Instance of a zone for them for that map, then the loot scales up that way. But, no, you don't get VR gear for opening a chest in your starter zone if your VR.
