This is an old thread, but still no answers. The tooltips sucks, so I bump this. I need answers, what is melee attack? What procs the viper set? do the dual wield whirlwind skill proc it? Caltrops?

The fact that there is a three-page thread being resurrected with no clear answers means something is way wrong. This is definitely something that needs to be addressed quickly with the mass influx of new players coming next month.

    ZoS laziness strikes again.

Each skill (and its morphs) should have, as part of the skill description:

    "Attack Type: Melee"
    "Attack Type: Missile"
    "Attack Type: Magic"

Melee is melee. Missile is reflectable. Magic is not reflectable.

    Examples:
    - Surprise Attack: Melee
    - Lethal Arrow: Missile
    - Velocious Curse: Magic

    Simple.

Zos pls offer this guy a job

Hand to hand close ranged attacks . Not ranged attacks

I think what he wants to know is this: does this apply to only light/heavy attacks? Or does it include any sort of close-range attack? Does it include abilities from the weapon skill trees? Does it include class skills that use magicka? For example, a templar's biting jabs used weapon crit instead of spellcrit for a long time (I think it still does). Is this considered a melee attack even though it uses magicka?

ZOS needs to get consistent with its terminology. The tooltips in this game are confusing.

The tooltips often conflict with the new effect text, too. It's atrocious, there's little to no point in actually reading them. The only way to get accurate information is to play test.

I agree with a few in here. ESO needs better descriptions and maybe a proper website where we can view skills etc.

    Hello everyone!

This thread was brought to my attention by Neon Zebra over on reddit here: http://www.reddit.com/r/elderscrollsonline/comments/35cbij/setting_the_record_straight_the_elder_scrolls/cr3posv .

As I'm not sure the full mechanics were figured out by people (fairly enough, really... the game doesn't exactly help you find out), here is how it works:

Other than the three exceptions listed below, any weapon-based attack with a range or radius of 5 meters or less that is not a projectile or ground target, qualifies as a "melee attack". As of patch version 1.6 on the live servers, this includes stamina based class line skill morphs. Ranged weapon attacks from staves or bows do not qualify, nor do higher-range/length conal attacks. Skills that move your character, but deal their damage only upon being in melee range, do qualify.

The three exceptions I am aware of that DO qualify as "melee attacks" for everything from racial passives to item sets, are:

-Caltrops: This Alliance War Assault-line skill is a ground targeted AOE with a large radius, but will trigger any ability, skill, or passive that says it is conditional upon "melee range".

-Flurry: This Dual Wield weapon-line skill has a "range" of 7 meters, uses your dual-wielded weapons, consumes stamina, and is in the dual wield skill line. However, it will trigger item sets such as Ravaging, and racials such as the Imperial's "Red Diamond" health restoration proc.

-Whirlwind: This Dual WIeld weapon-line skill will count as a "melee attack" as it has a radius of five meters. If morphed to "Steel Tornado", this radius becomes 11 meters at rank 1, and ends up at 12.5 meters when fully leveled to rank 4, and will no longer trigger "melee attack" conditions. If morphed to "Whirling Blades", which adds a stamina restoration aspect, the radius remains at 5 meters and it will still count as a "melee attack".

:) Hope this is helpful to anyone trying to figure it all out!

What about the stamina morph of Templar's Biting Jabs? Your post leads me to believe that this counts as a melee attack even though it's a conal attack. You specify higher range conal attacks as not counting, and off the top of my head, biting jabs has a range of 8m or so.

What about Ultimates, namely the NB ultimate from the Assassination tree and the Templar ultimate from the Aedric Spear tree? I would wager that the NB Assassination ulti is a melee attack, but Radial Sweep may be a different story. Its range is 5m, i.e. melee range, however it is a channeled/DoT AoE ability. More importantly, I guess I'm trying to ask whether ultimates can count as melee attacks. They use ultimate as opposed to magicka or stamina. Another skill to test might be the DK Dragon Leap because it functions like a charge.

Ultimates can count as melee attacks. I haven't ever thought to test Leap in particular so I can't remark on that though my guess is that it would not due to its radius being too big on landing, but the Empowering Sweep Templar ultimate does as far as I know.

@Attorneyatlawl Great work! Thanks for the in-depth response.

Now, I just have one follow-up question: Do bleed damage ticks, such as from Axes, Brawler, or Twin Sisters set proc, count as melee attacks? Just wondering if I can use bleed damage to help trigger Ravager set damage proc ;)

Channelled spells are INSTANT CAST, but have a duration (i.e. the channel time)
instant cast spells are that - u press the button and the spell fires off.
casting time spells means you press the button, u grunt/groan/make gestures, then it fires off. (Like a heavy attack with a staff).

It's not a simple answer. Generally attacks with a range of 5-7 meters is a mele attack and generally attacks from the three mele type weapons (2H, DW & S&B) are mele but that's not an absolute. Wirlwind from DW is not fixed as a mele attack and as such will probably not proc the set. There may be other attacks that have the same issue.
