More Like WoW

I'm thinking the OP was aiming more for the angle that WoW's basically spoiled people. They've become so accustomed to the baby's first MMO feel of WoW they have the same expectation of any other MMO, inadvertently causing the downfall of many new MMO's with interesting ideas. WoW has conditioned people to be impatient. It's all about the instant gratification for them. It's gotten to the point that WoW's become too ludicrous for its own good, constantly rewriting its own history, constantly dumbing down mechanics, constantly watering down content. There's no sense of awe and accomplishment anymore. It's all about how fast can I get this achievement done and over with, where's my loot, where does this new vanity pet drop. Everything is pretty much handed to players instead of earned.

I went through what a friend of mine calls the 'hardest divorce ever' by completely dropping WoW. I tried to play it for a few hours a day but as time went on it became almost painful to play. Painfully boring and ultimately ESO took up more and more of my time. Now WoW is basically an overpriced facebook to me. I only remain subbed to keep in touch with friends, which now you can do with the handy dandy BS-net launcher that's supposedly soooo innovative.

So many people complain about ESO's mechanics and systems, and they ask for improvements to make it easier. But that's not making it easier. That's wanting to turn it into WoW, and in the long run that'd cause far more harm than good. If WoW conditioned people to instant gratification, then I'd like to hope ESO can do the reverse and show people the virtues of delayed gratification. Like Cookie Monster and Tom Hiddleston.

Want to play World of Warcraft?

THEN GO PLAY WORLD OF WARCRAFT

Why ESO isn't like WoW? Because it's not WoW, it's better than it. WoW is still stuck in 2005. Everything after WoTLK is a downfall for WoW.

Well, thanks to you Sir, my irony detector didn't just go off the scale, it positively went into low earth orbit. If it hits the ISS, I will hold you responsible for damages.

Yeah, good luck with that. WoW isn't the only thing out there conditioning people for instant gratification, unfortunately, and that conditioning has a tendency to bleed into everything else.

Oh this entirely. WoW has huge numbers, because its player base have been conditioned by the wider western world. They are just following the trend.

People stay for the feel good factor and addiction to it, not realising that the rewards for patience, hard work and otherwise are far greater. And are what actually bring meaning to something.

Becoming all about gratification - makes you a weaker person in general. Its a construct of manipulation and addiction, to mill money from the stupid. If people could actually look beyond it, they'd better appreciate how challenging it is to create a new mmo like ESO in our current market. When people are so short sighted that they only value the path of least resistance, then its no easy thing to pull off.

If people don't want to support a wow'esque ESO, then they need to support that fact vocally. Just because WoW is established and appeals to the easy, doesnt make it better.

The devs cant move the game forward without money, so as long as people expect every mmo to compete with wow and emulate it, there can be no forward movement.

That awkward moment when you realize people still do the WOW vs current MMO they play... but instead of zone chat they do it on the forums... the end of the world is near.

    WoW was the first MMO...

Nope, WoW came long after great MMO's like Everquest, Ultima Online, SWG and Daoc.

Let wow be wow and let every other game not be wow, kinda tired of all the wow clone games on the market, glad ESO is not.

People knocking WoW fail to understand that it is successful and they hate that. ESO tried to deviate off the path that new MMO's have learned from World of Warcraft and in return it is now a Buy 2 Play game. ESO just like Wild Star, TESA and many other brands trying to reshape the MMO's using the old system of what most people like to call "Hard work" and "Progression".

I get it that back in the day this worked but today's market is more centered on casual gameplay since a majority of us have gotten older and many of us have put in hours of gameplay onto other games before. I know I have when I level 3 characters to 75 on FFXI and as I think about it I lost alot of things to that game. Lost a job, lost a grlfriend and started to do poorly in school. Thankfully I grew up, got married and now have a successful career.

So in short, true progression is moving forward. Lets stop glorying the past and make MMO's enjoyable and not tedious.

If ESO was more like WoW I would stop playing.

    Screw that game!

The only people that think that wow is a good game, are the people that never played all the great games before wow that wow stole all it's ideas from lol.

If anything, they should be looking at Asherons Call 1, Anarchy Online and Dark Age of Camelot for inspiration. Each game for a variety of reasons, but definitely not wow. I feel dirty even talking about that steaming pile of dung.
