Beware of how many $$ you spent on crowns. I played a lot of mmo's and also a lot went F2P. They start with a cash shop with cool items, slowly upgrading them to items only obtained through harcode raiding (ie Vanguards flying mounts and Galleon).

And then when the had their $$ they pull the plug. Goodbye virtual (useless) items and goodbye hard earned $$

I know a load of people who bought:

-SGW trading card game cards for the SWG game for ingame items. Plug pulled
-Vanguard: Galleons, flying mounts, vanity stuff: Plug pulled
-NFS world: Cars, upgrades: plug pulled
-Free realms: Not so free if you want to enjoy it. Loads of people bought stuff: plug pulled

and there are any more examples.

For me, I luckily never fell for these fluff items. Also in TESO a mount can be cool. I got my free tiger and it will do. Every other mount has same stats. If one is a roleplayer, I understand you want to ride an undead horse, or guar or whatever.

I understand some people don't care about money and also I have more then enough to spend on needless stuff, but I am very carefull on "virtual" items.

You buy something THAT IS NOT YOURS. You don't own it. You can use it, sure. You can even stockpile it if you like. But you can’t own it. Wanting it. Needing it. Wishing for it. The point is… if not enough people spend money on it… eventually a plug will be pulled.

Decades ago, when folks were speculating about what the market for this would be, they'd refer to them as UDIs - Unique Digital Items. But that term vanished because it didn't make sense. Now UDI means all sorts of things other than that.

But they're still sold that way and people still think of them that way. Why? Because our mental model remains a physical one.

It's just data though. Thus terms like limited or unique do not apply even though they're used.

The exchange below illustrates this quite well.

"Limited time offer", is certainly open to interpretation. Which is why it is a successful marketing ploy because it implies that it will "only" be available for a limited time and never again. Then when it is offered again, for a lower price, those that purchased it the first time, feel they are getting cheated.

It is possible we will offer the Senche-Leopard mount again at some point. If we release something in the Crown Store that we intend to not bring back, we'll state as much.

Look how vague and equivocal the official response is. But it's accurate and honest even though the labeling is not.

Earlier games like Ultima Online had a very different take on it. Limited time meant....limited time. Objects, pets and items would appear in that game as part of a story line and NEVER appear again.

And even though the user base for that game is tiny in comparison to others the market value of some of these purely digital items remains astonishingly high.

But is it value to the developers? Yes. There are people still paying for 10, 20, even 40 accounts in UO to have access to their massive collections of digital items. And some of these people haven't even logged into the game for years.

Such is the power of this concept.

But when you abandon the subscription model - UO never did - any concept of unique or limited is gone forever.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; I don't mind subbing. Currently it's what, approx $15 to sub? That's three drinks at Starbucks. Do I get more enjoyment out of the game in a month than I would from three drinks at Starbucks? Yes; therefore, it's worth the sub.

lol, if you really think overprizedcoffe with out of place sirup in it that is served (just kidding, you have to stand up and get it yourself) in a Airport-like ambiente is a good benchmark for any price, please reconsider. And try out some nice traditonal coffeeshops.

Maybe you can find one more easily with an app for your iphone.

I don't know about wherever you are, but around here the non-chain coffee shops are more expensive than Starbucks. Of course, I actually live where the chain started, so some of the Starbucks around here actually know how to make good coffee.

There is a new game from the makers of Ultima, called Shroud of the Avatar.

I backed this game a long while ago for 40 euro I think. Game is still pre-alpha. But every release they have a tour quest. Every tour quest gives an unique item (mostly hats) which they state that "they will never appear again".
Although I am to lazy to participate in these tour guide quests (some involve grouping and I don't have time to lfg) and I know I will never get these unique hats I praise this. As a backer I also have some "unique" items. Also SotA is a f2p game. Even if they pull the plug however, you can still play the game in offline mode.

It's far from finished. But some dev's know the concept of unique. If I read first a unique leopard, and then "It is possible we will offer the Senche-Leopard mount again at some point" I only read moneygrab.

yeah.. rings of mara "exclusivity" shows that nothing is permanent and promises will be broken..

This was something we talked about for, well...about a year now. One of the most common requests we got in regards to the pre-order items was "The person I originally used my Pledge of Mara with is no longer around. Can I undo the Rings of Mara buff and do the Pledge with someone else?" This was the driving force behind offering it again.

    Offer it for free then.

That sounds like a reasonable solution.

While they're at it, would you like them to make everything else free? And just work as volunteers?

    Of course not.
My point is simply this: if the driving force behind offering the Pledge of Mara again was to please those who wished to undo the buff, then it should be for free to those players, as they have already paid for it.

At no point did I suggest any of them work for free or that the game should be free. That is a slippery slope argument.

Most of us are 100% cool with the Ring of Mara being a for pay item. A poor-decision on a player's part shouldn't be compensated by ZOS.

If you want another ring... pay for it. Simple.

well, my original point was to emphasize on "EXCLUSIVITY".
personally i don't care about rings. but if something was promised as EXCLUSIVE, it should stay that way. if they want to sell buff (provided by rings), make another item with little bit less effect OR make original ring to have something, that will make it real EXCLUSIVE

Just noticed something as I logged in....I don't pay much attention to the launcher I'm afraid.

It does not say the leopard mount is available for a limited time. It says for a limited time only.

    That last word changes everything.

"It is possible we will offer the Senche-Leopard mount again at some point."

In light of the official statement we now have a case of an outright lie broadcast to all players in big, bold letters.

I don't care about a mount. It doesn't matter that it's not owned by people who buy it or not. It's a matter of willfully and knowingly lying to customers.

Y'all can argue about this among yourselves. It's up to you whether it means anything.

For me, and this might sound silly, I need a company I do business with to have a moral core.

@ZOS_JessicaFolsom I really like the leopard but haven't bought one yet. Still kind of on the fence about it. Is there anyway we can get a large on-screen count-down when only 3 hours remain that stays on your screen flashing until the time runs down so we know exactly how much time we have left before we miss out on this exclusive first time buyers opportunity?

Yes, in game there will be a count down. Every Monday when the servers are shut down, there is a yellow warning message that says servers will be take off line in 15 minutes. When those 15 minutes are up, the mount will no long be in the store.

If you're on the wall and you'll be able to afford to eat next month if you buy it, then I say get it. Trust me its not worth the regret if you lose it and can (possibly) never get it back... I wish I had gone over board and bought more months to get the tiger, but thanks to the ambiguous help service I thought I had enough when like many others I was only one month out due to real life circumstances. They should roll it back to only nine months instead of ten... Now I dont know if I can ever get what would have been my favourite mount. Though, unless I've missed something they didnt say they would never release it again in the future in the post... Maybe if I keep 'subtly' posting about it everywhere they'll get the message... I can hope. Anyway, I got the leopard, and the detail on it is beautiful in my high graphics, but I couldnt help feeling a stab of disappointment as it wasnt a tiger... Still, no regrets buying it. It may also be rarer than the tiger, I've seen more tigers than leopards so far since the leopard is only going to available (presumably) for this weekend. Though with how its easier to pull teeth and nails out than it is to get just a cat mount in this game I do fear how much harder even cooler looking mounts will be to get... If I have to sell my mother before a certain date for a dragon mount let me know, I'll need to prime some buyers...

For me, it was so worth the money! I knew as soon as I saw it that I wanted it. This won't be true for everyone. If you aren't in love with it immediately, I'd hold off. If I understand it correctly, "limited time offer" and "limited time only" are vastly different.

With the offer, it can be limited to now for a week, but nothing is to say that the limit doesn't include future offerings or windows. It only infers that it won't be purchasable forever.

Limited time only seems to imply once the offer ends it won't be coming back.

I am not 100% sure though, maybe a legal type person can clarify.

Either way, any promise-like action coming from ZoS holds 0% faith with me that it won't get changed. Even if they hold to making the current spotted senche limited or exclusive, they can just make another one with browner spots and call it something else and sell that.

The pre-order rings were included as an added incentive with the implication of exclusivity to those that pre-ordered. While only getting one ring is problematic for reasons like you mentioned, there could be code to recycle that ring back into a pledge for re-use. Instead of undo-ing it for those that had it, the solution is to offer a replacement to everyone? I can see how making some cost for those that pre-ordered to recycle makes sense, but to everyone...

That makes the ring of mara exclusive, to those that pay cash.

    Awesome.
