To become GM they would have to apply to ZOS for them to give the GM-ship to someone new. ZOS at this point would try and contact the previous GM to check this is OK.
Pretty sure the last bit is correct as one of my Guilds has a 'missing' GM' atm and the Deputy is trying to get the Leadership.

Oh wow. WHY would they do it this way? NO ONE should be able to kick the creator of the guild/guild leader. IF a GL were to disappear for months I can see other members being able to petition ZOS to transfer leadership but that's it. This is a HUGE design flaw if true.

Sorry for the mis-information it appears as GM you cannot be removed by your officers, nor can your officers remove people holding any other rank above them, such as a Deputy.
