[Poll] Make chat bubbles active by default

Greetings Forum!

I like to give away gear, and help other players. It's something I find great pleasure in doing. BUT! Something has been rather obvious to me. It can be VERY difficult to interact with other players.

Some time ago, I found a blue weapon, and I started wandering about a city to find someone who might be able to use it as an upgrade. 9/10 people I tried to talk to by using /say, ran straight past me, or just didn't react to it. Why? because to them, it looks like some creep is standing in front of them, doing nothing. 1 person did read the chatbox and saw my messages.

I think it's important that we can easier interact with other players, without a GREAT risk of being ignored unintentionally. Some people might prefer chat bubbles off, and that's fine. The option should always be there. You could say the same thing about my claim here "Just activate it if it bothers you". Well a lot of people don't really think about these things. Many of the people who fail to read my messages to them, probably haven't thought about the lack of chat bubbles, and because of that, it's hard to get in contact with them.

So, in conclussion, I suggest setting chat bubbles active by default, as I can not think of a compelling reason why not to. The game should encourage social activity.

Please vote and prove me right or wrong!

- demonaffinity

EDIT: It's obvious many players would dislike the feature being active by default! However, I forgot to mention that I think the feature should be introduced at some point. It's rather unorthodox for an mmo to not have chat bubbles active, so I think at least it should be introduced at some point, wether or not the feature should be on or off. (I should have put that in the poll too. OOPS!)

No, they walked past me because they didn't see my message. I've whispered some of them who didn't react to my first message, and some of them reply back that they would like to recieve the gear I'm offering.

I have chat bubbles enabled, but only for group members or tells.

For everything else, there is a chat box.

The thing is, on many games "Say" is a chat option that is supposed to be used when interacting in the nearby area. Kinda like when you talk in real life. I don't understand why it's restricted to the chatbox. I can understand whispers, guildchat, groupchat etc, but say should be visable in the nearby area in my opinion.

You *can* do that if you want.

I just don't want to see chat bubbles over the head of some stranger saying stuff that has nothing to do with me, so I turned that part of it off.

    That is my personal preference.

Well, like I said in my OP, if it bothers you, turn it off. If it didn't bother you, you wouldn't care wether or not it's on or not. Trying to use say chat (like walking up to someone in real life and saying hello) and knowing they have to look down at the corner to even be able to acknowledge what Im trying to do, is silly in my book. It's one of the first MMO's Ive seen who does not have chat bubbles for regular "say".

I can't tell you how many times I've suggested this. The people that don't like them are just being spoilsports. SO many people don't even know they exist! On by default to simply educate people of their existence.

Most of the people on this forum don't like ideas that don't 100% fit into their playstyle or doesn't directly benefit them. They can't see past THEIR game to see what's beneficial to ESO or the community.

It's not a bad idea per se. If you really don't want it, you can turn it off, sure. The same is true in reverse, if you really want it you can turn it on. It's even-steven really, so might as well leave it as it is.
Plus I despise chat bubbles, which makes me biased but doesn't invalidate my opinion. And that is that dev resources should have been spent on more important stuff instead of fluff in the first place.

Aren't chat bubbles still considered in beta? Last I checked the settings it still said beta beside the option to turn them on. Nothing that is in beta should ever be turned on by default.

The problem is that the feature is hidden. Many people don't even know it exist.

Because if you want to get your message out to the most people in a City, then use Zone Chat. Trying to strike up a conversation with a random person running by in a city is not going to work. For example, when I am in a city, I am there for a reason and I taking care of that reason. I am not paying attention to chat, I am focused on getting done what I need to do and getting out of the city, or logged back to one of my other characters.

The first rule of sales, or giveaways is to find people who want what you have to offer and do not waste time talking to those who are not interested. So, use an Ad to bring in the interested customers, then talk to them.

This is how I give stuff away, and how I have seen others do the same thing. There is one player who makes a set of L10 gear and gives it away once a week. He stands in the city center and sends out zone messages and soon finds someone to take the gear. I just give away single items.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Three reasons to leave chat bubbles off by default.
    1. They are a beta feature
    2. Performance issues
    3. Most importantly more people dislike chat bubble than like.

Sorry, I don't want chat bubbles on by default. It would be ridiculous to make a new character, then go outside to see all these bubbles screwing up the scenery.

I agree with Nestor, I don't pay any attention to say or yell when I'm in town. I use it only near dolmens, world bosses etc. when I don't want to form a group just for a few minutes. Zone would have served your purpose better.

That said, I don't think turning chat bubbles on by default is a bad idea. I don't like them and never use them, but it's not a problem to turn them off. On the other hand, a lot of people don't even know chat bubbles exist, so maybe it would be a good way to raise awareness.

Yeah I usually use zone chat for giving away items. I dont use say chat on moving players, because of obvious reasons. I just like to get more personal. Walking up to someone and having a conversation is much more satisfying to me. It bothers me greatly that this is not possible in this game.

Chat bubbles won't solve your problem. Even if they're on by default, people you try to talk to could dislike them and turn them off, so again you'll be seen only in chat window.

And if I wanted to talk to several people in front of me without forming a party? Sure we could all have a tab only for /say, but I think it's unreasonable to expect everyone to take such an action. Having visual chat bubbles just makes everything easier. of course it should always be an option wether or not you want them though.

Also having chat bubbles at LEAST introduced at some point, would add some life into the world.

You can talk to them like this if you want. What I'm trying to say is that I'll never see your chat bubbles because I will turn them off. They clutter my screen and I don't like them. It works just fine with like-minded people, but it still won't be a reliable method of contacting random strangers like me this way.
