Any class can be any role. That's why the game doesn't tell you that a Dragonknight is supposed to be DPS. A Dragonknight can be DPS depending on what equipment, skill, and attribute choices you make. A Dragonknight can also be a tank, depending on what equipment, skill, and attribute choices you make. A Dragonknight can also be a healer depending on what equipment, skill, and attribute choices you make. The same goes for every class. They each have different class skills, but each class can be effective at any role, depending on how you build them. Oh, and there are 4 different classes to choose from, not 3: Dragonknight, Templar, Sorcerer, and Nightblade.

This is absolutely untrue if you wish to be competitive in PvP or experience "end game" content. Certain classes and builds excell in different roles and some flat out are not viable. 1-50 you can do whatever you want, but I highly recommend you reasearch the classes or you might end up with a build/class that is hardly playable after level 50 content.
With the right build any class can be competitive in any role, regardless of what level of play you're talking about. For some classes there are far fewer competitive builds for a given role than there would be for another class (for example, there are a lot more competitive Templar healer builds than there are Nightblade or Sorcerer healer builds, but there are definitely competitive healer builds for those classes too), but that's not the point.

If that is the case, I would love to see you post the following PvP competitive builds :)

    Ranged DPS Dragonknight
    Melee DPS Sorcerer

The fact is, most class passives and abilities are only best suited for a few specific roles, especially in PvP. Maybe you can get away with a crap build sometimes in PvE but the OP clearly stated that he enjoys PvP so he should chose his class wisely.

In 1.6? Dumb easy, almost like you're not even trying here.

DK: Equip a bow for Stamina, Inferno Staff for Magicka. In fact Pyromages can probably be an amazing antizerg build.

Sorc: Equip a 2H like a normal person and go to town like everybody else, our even sword and board.

Also to the OP: Dude, quit the game because you're obviously still hung up on GW2. Play this when you're willing and able and stop complaining about things when you're looking for things to complain about.

I said competitive in PvP , not builds that would be facerolled lol. You better stick to PvE, but thanks for the laugh anyways.

But ya, basically I'm at level 4, have no clue what to do. Someone told me to look at my journal, there is no active quests.

You have played a lot of the single player Elder Scrolls games and have no clue what to do in an open world setting?

I suggest to take your time with the PVE content, just pick a direction and explore, don't worry about finding starter island or doing all the quests in a linear fashion. Just go where you think your character would want to go, do whichever quests seem interesting. When enemies start to feel too easy, find your way to the next zone.

At some point if you decide to visit Cyrodiil, join a guild and make friends with folks who can help you improve in PVP - you might find that it is a bit more like the TES sandbox environment than the PVE areas, although the justice system was a great addition.

My advice would be to stop trying to compare it to GW2.

My second piece of advice would be to play the game a little more. Honestly, you haven't even scratched the surface yet. Those NPCs you meet WILL show up again, and you're doing yourself a disservice by trying to rush through the game.

My third piece of advice is: Seriously let go of contrasting everything with GW2. Let yourself ENJOY your experience rather than meeting everything and thinking, "Well, this is different from GW2 because in GW2 such and such happened and it was done such and such way."

There are LEGITIMATE things to be critical of. I think your criticism of being dumped into the town instead of the starter island after the prison sequence is extremely valid. But, you really need to play the game a little bit more.

It was a dark cold day in Glenumbra. Rain started pouring from the sky and soon enveloped the land in a dismal pall of wretched wetness. My bloodsoaked and already rusted Nord armor felt like it was going to disintegrate around my body. The heavy armor was suffocating me. In the distance I saw a farm with a pond. Not knowing if the inhabitants would be friendly or not, I led my tan steed "Galarias" over to tree nearby the pond, dismounted and tethered her. Eight divines, the rust color from the armor was running down my arms. I rushed to the pond took off the heavy Nord set of armor and heaved it into the bushes nearby and sank to my knees next to the pond. It was still cold, but at least the rusted, battleworn armor was no longer stifling my skin. I started to wash away the rust that was covering my arms, Galarias neighed a bit by the tree. Well, that set of armor was done let rot in the bushes, it had always felt a bit odd after I took it off a dead Nord in Cyrodil. Rain was pelting my bare chest, it felt good. I was busy washing my torso by the pond, my head had been down as I focused on the cleaning process when i lifted my head and took a look across the somewhat misty pond i spotted a figure in a grey robe with a hood staring at me! Normally, I would have loosened one of the throwing dagger that i kept concealed in my pant, but for some reason i felt like this time it was better to play it off like i hadn't seen him. When i casually looked up again the figure was gone. That did startle me! I usually don't lose track of mysterious figures, even if they are enshrouded in grey mist and robes on a rainy day. I loosened a knife from my leather breeches and readied it in one hand and got up casually to check on my horse Galarias. I was up and turned my gaze to the tree where my horse was and i saw someth I ng inconceivable to me. It appeared the grey stranger was feeding a carrot to Galarias and talking to her in muffled whispers. He had one hand leaning against the tree with his back to me and was feeding Galarias with the other. What an event, why wasn't Galarias suspicious or at least upseg, she was trained well enough to know not to trust strangers. I started walking slowly and silently towards the figure and my horse, as i got closer i could see the figure had a feline furry tail sticking out from the back of the robes. A Khajit! They must be using some sort of desert magic on Galarias to pacify her! Well, this game was over I decided. I lifted my arm dagger in hand and then swung it forward letting the blade fly straight and true landing with a thunk into the wood and pinning the robe sleeve to the tree. Then I rushed over with another dagger instantly in my hands spun the khajit away from my horse and pinned him against the tree blade to his throat. Of course i could smell the stench of cat breath, but i got in close anyway and asked, "Who are you?" He responded, "This one is M'aiq the Liar, truly I did not know you were here!"

Oh I did just start the game, and wanted to share my experience because I know the game is going B2P soon and wanted to give them my critique on starting zone.

Now I do recall someone running towards me at the beginning but I started talking in chat right when I got there and I trespassed like I said, seemed to ignore that NPC and someone gave me free gear and showed me around alik'r desert, and orc island?, so when I came back to glembura I couldn't find him and was lost.

I'm level 7 now, and that guy that said something about the boat quest, that's what I did, help 3 guys escape and then do a heist? I also did the harborage quest, so I see some kind of connection but at the time when I was in the newb/starter zone I felt as though there would be no connection because I thought it was just some fantasy land and previous elder scrolls, you don't see the NPCs that are in fantasy land once you leave.

I did buy the hard copy of the game. The booklet is 2 pages, has no lore at all, so please do not say "ya shoulda read up on game prior" all it has in the 2 page booklet is what your skills are on the keyboard.

I feel more apart of the game and getting used to it now, I feel just like that other guy that came from GW2, takes 10 hours to finally figure out what to do. I was just giving my honest opinion of the game after playing it for a few hours.

I've played elder scrolls games I know about the quest markers and such, also played other MMO's and know that quest givers will give you a level 50 quest when your still level 4 or so. That's why I was frustrated a bit, I don't want to get into some bad questline, I see too much quests and I just wanted the MAIN quest, it should be a different color than all the other quests to show difference.

The main quest is filed differently in your journal, but you can't just play through that quest in one go. You progress through it as you level up your character.

But again, if you don't read the dialogue and make sweeping assumptions about "fantasy-land" (planes of Oblivion are not fantasies, FYI), you're going to feel like everything's really disconnected.

No, it is fantasy, technically everything in the game is fantasy land.

OP, the way this game is designed, the main quest is just a small part of everything you're supposed to be doing. You're meant to go out there, explore, talk to people, do quests here and there - not just follow a beeline from one Harborage quest to another.

In fact, there are two main quests: Coldharbor storyline about the Five Companions (Coldharbor is the place where you escaped from in the tutorial, you'll see more of it in the future) and your alliance's storyline. The first has quests every 5 levels, usually staring in the Harborage. The second takes you throughout each main zone, rewarding you with skill points sometimes. So if you want to follow something, follow the second one and hop into the first only as the quests pop up at the appropriate times.

You keep asking about lore; I'm not sure what to tell you, it's something you learn along the way, did you want it all dumped on you right after arriving in the city? The Prophet explains the events leading to Molag Bal's invasion on Tamriel pretty early on. But if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask

Sorry ..that wall of text was hurting my eyes so I will give some pointers for what I read.

    1. Walk around town and you will see NPCs with upside down black triangles above their head. They are quest givers. Talk to them and accept the quest. Some are MAIN story line (that follows a line from level 1-50+) and some are SIDE quests specific to the location. Some can be found in open ground.

    3. Press the J key (journal). The 1st tab is the journal. It lists all the quests you have accepted under different location you accepted them. The achievement tabs documents everything you have completed.

    4. If you click a quest in this journal and press the M key (map) it will mark the quest triangles on the map and the direction you need to go. White is active and black is not currently active...although you can still go there and complete it.

    5. The camera follows the mouse in this game for dynamic combat....the keys are movement.

    6. When you are level 10 you can press the L key for the alliance war PVP tab. You can select/enter a home and guest campaign server which is an instance of Cyrodiil where all 3 factions fight over keeps and resources.

    7. Hitting the M key will show the map. As you travel to different locations you will see different markers appear in black. These locations have town quests that have not been completed. When you have completed them the black marker will turn white and say" You completed so and so". You need to journey within range of these towns before they will be marked in your map. Like you have to accept quests before they will be marked on your map.

    8. Group PVE. The 5+ torch markers are PVE dungeons that can be done solo, with other people or you can use the group tab if you want to party together with icons to identify where each other are. There is also 6x world bosses (per zone) which are skull & crossbone icons. For these you want 2-3 people to tag along until you are familiar with the mechanics enough to challenge alone. There is also 3x dolmens (per zone) from coldharbour where you must fight Daedra incursions. Again with 1-3+ people depending on how competent you are. There is also 5+ pathfinder icons which are sightseeing places and every zone has 1 public dungeon and 1 group dungeon. The public dungeon (cave icon) you would have to be really good to solo when you are starting out and is something you only have to ask for help on with zone chat to get others to join you. The Group dungeon is designed for 3+ man groups and should be more challenging for people that can work together. On top of these Daedra will drop at random and accost you when you least expect it.

Word of advice....walk along every piece of path you see on the map.
    Safe journey ;)

I didn't skip any dialogue, or bypassed any dialogue. When I said I wanted the first instance the newb area to be a quick process, I didn't mean I just went ahead and skipped everything. What I meant was, I did a part, and then theres another part and another part and another part, I just wanted it to be done and over with. Felt like I was watching a bad movie and I'm just waiting for it to end lol.

I know about 5 companions and that 1 guy went bad and the story I finished the harborage I didn't skip anything, so please stop accusing me of skipping stuff. I am going through this game nicely, its just someone helped me out, took me to a bunch of places and gave me nice gear, and I had to log off, than I logged back in and I totally didn't know where the main quest was, or which city I was suppose to be doing stuff in.

I want to do the main quest to follow the lore of the game, I'm not someone who just skips dialogue and doesn't try to understand the lore. I'm about to play the game again, so far the only things I've done was the harborage, and that rescue 3 guys, do a heist on bad city ruler, gromek? I'm level 7 currently too like that one guy predicted lol. Oh I did the quest with dog luring me to the note too.

For some reason after doing these quests, I get feeling that I didnt change anything, like now that I got rid of gromek (bad city ruler) is he going to get replaced or does he just stay there?

Also, I noticed that you can get by quests easily by waiting for others sometimes really strong people to come by and own everything and you just sneak behind them and finish quest while they do the work lol. Also, not used to seeing bunch of people do the quest im doing and the mob that's suppose to jump you respawns like whenever someone else with that quest comes by, I noticed someone camping to own those mobs to help people, not sure if he was helping or just raising his skills, but I assume that's a good way to raise skills? As in go in a popular quest area and just keep killing the mob because so many people doing that quest that mob spawns back super fast? its just something I'm not use to, nothing bad or anything.
