I thought the same thing. I seem to remember discussion about how that "give to the poor" achievement only worked if you gave gold to the randomly encountered people begging in the wilds, and not if you gave gold to the always-present beggars in cities.I do seem to remember early in the game you could, maybe it was in beta? Or have I totally imagined that?

But those people in the cities need it pretty bad! They are so pitiful. I did find a random beggar in the wild, though, and helped him out.

Would like to see giving to beggars do some good, but that might be hard to pull off in an MMO.
Why can't we give the beggar NPCs a gold piece as we did in Skyrim or Oblivion? I feel so sad for them when they ask for gold! Please let us give beggars a gold in a future update.
Or, if you've given gold to beggars within a particular period of time they won't count as witnesses to crimes committed against other people... That would be a nifty and characterful thing to do. Psst, here, I'll give you a few coins if you look the other way while I nick a purse from this mark!Would like to see giving to beggars do some good, but that might be hard to pull off in an MMO.
I have an idea, what if giving gold to beggars increased how much that beggar liked you and if he likes you enough he will come to your aid if you are close enough to him if you are being attacked/pursued by a guard/npc. The amount that you are liked is directly proportional to how recently you gave and how much gold you gave to the beggar.
Time since donation = distance beggar will travel to help you.
Amount given = how much damage the beggar is willing to take for you.

There are a few random encounters in the wild that will give you achievements if you complete them in all zones: giving gold to one of the random beggars is one of those encounters.
Others include intimidating a merchant to steal from them, lighting a fire for a couple of people too incompetent to do it themselves, and talking to M'aiq.

All very true, and good to note. There are 2 different spots in each zone where M'aiq can spawn (at least I think there are only 2 in each zone), and they are usually places that are isolated, and with no obvious reason to go there, but often with an interesting view.starkerealm wrote: »But those people in the cities need it pretty bad! Just a quick note. M'aiq spawns out in the wild. The campfires (Lightbringer), merchants (Crime Pays), and beggars (Give to the Poor), share their spawn nodes, and are always alongside roads in the zone.
The merchants will appear standing next to a horse. As opposed to the ones walking the roads. Also, when intimidating them, the achievement doesn't tick until you actually collect the contents of their backpack. Simply intimidating and running off doesn't get you paid.

It could even be a buff that shows on your character screen for a set time: "Turn a Blind Eye: beggars will not report you for crimes, unless the crime is committed against a beggar".Or, if you've given gold to beggars within a particular period of time they won't count as witnesses to crimes committed against other people... Oh that's awesome! A lot simpler and more 'realistic'. I vote for your idea.

Make a separate thread for this to give it some visibility!
I do think, however, There should be more to it than just the thieving support. It should be presented as a choice like.
"Alms for an old ex-lepper?"
- May the Eight watch over you. (150G) = Blessings of the Eight is cast upon you +10%XP gain for 10 minutes
- Keep watch street rat. (150G) = Turn a Blind Eye is cast upon you, Beggars will not witness your crimes for 10 minutes
- Goodbye
