    Oblivion
I got Oblivion GOTY for the Xbox 360 the Christmas after we got it.

After that, I found that the Morrowind version for the Xbox worked on the 360 and played through most of it, until the save files started getting too big and my game kept freezing and I lost track of what I was doing.

I got Skyrim when it came out.

    And now I'm playin ESO.

I still want to play Arena and Daggerfall to see what they are like, and since I have a gaming PC now, I got the PC version of Morrowind and modded it to improved graphics with the intent of playing it again.

    Pre-Morrowind
My first Elder Scrolls game was Daggerfall. It came bundled with Arena, but I didn't play that until much later.

I warmly remember finding an exploit with my second character, on their first side quest after leaving Daggerfall's starter dungeon. I had to deliver something to a general store, and afterward used a well-known trick to get the shop owner to disappear so I could ransack the place and get a free horse and wagon. Turns out the quest-receiver didn't disappear, wouldn't report me for theft, and was a merchant so they'd buy stuff from me. Also, stores had unlimited horses and wagons.

I left there and immediately bought the largest ship, second largest house, and had plenty to spare.

Daggerfall also began my tradition of starting each Elder Scrolls game with an Argonian character. I went through character creation about half a dozen times before I had someone I enjoyed and who could get past the first few enemies!
    1. Daggerfall was an Argonian spellblade (my very first attempt was a stealthy linguist, I couldn't get past the rat)
    2. Morrowind's argonian had a mix of combat and stealth abilities, including speechcraft.
    3. Oblivion returned to being a spellblade.
    4. Skyrim was Freezes-His-Tail-Off, a pure mage who focused on fire magic (to warm himself up) and alchemy.

I wish I could remember all of their names.

    Morrowind
    miy98p36io9q.png

I was first introduced to the Elder Scrolls series with Morrowind on the Xbox. I won't date myself too specifically, but I couldn't wait for classes to be done the day it came out! After clicking Start, I heard the above words boom through my TV speakers and I was immediately hooked. Who was I? Why was I released from prison? Where am I? What is that giant mushroom thing?! Never before had I entered a more enthralling and alien world, and couldn't get enough of the deep lore and stories.

Morrowind taught me my first really big lesson in gaming: use more than one save file. I had dumped hundreds upon hundreds of hours into my character, and she was my only one. My pride and joy: a diehard pro-Dunmer assassin-thief, Nerevarine, Grandmaster of House Telvanni and Hlaalu. Every other character was one whom my brothers played.

One day, I was in a rush to go pick someone up from the train station and I was saving my game (which, as you can imagine, took a very long time by that point). The house phone rang and I moved to push myself up to grab it (this is back before cell phones were common ;)), accidentally smashing my thumb on the power button.

I didn't think anything of it at the time, but after returning and loading the game up... the dreaded "Save file corrupted" error greeted me.

The last save file I had of this character was made the day I created her.

Needless to say, I've always made sure that I have no fewer than ten save files per character in ANY game since that fateful day. I have recreated her as my main character in every Elder Scrolls game since. You can even see my attempt to create her in to ESO below!

    Morrowind
I started with Morrowind. I still think it is better than anything that followed. This is probably coloured by the fact that I liked that, if you'd finished the game, you knew how it could be broken through intelligence boosting alchemy and you made your choice as to whether you would or not. On top of that you could make a flying potion, flying item or flying spell plus the LOL of the Jumping Spell Scroll from hell (after you'd ignorantly suicided using it once).

    Skyrim
Lol guess I'm a 'Skyrim hipster' only I have stuck around and will continue to. Even with its flaws I love this game.

I didn't know anything about TES until Skyrim, and when I got a hold of it I fell in love. I tried to play Oblivion after I beat Skyrim the first time... for some reason I have this thing, find a 'newer' game love it, play previous ones. (did it with Dragon Age too lol) However by the time I tried Oblivion I was so into how awesome graphics could be (thank you modders!!) that I just couldn't get into it. One day, I will try again lol!

    Morrowind
I bought Morrowind in late 2002, shortly after the first expansion (Tribunal) came, but I had a weak computer with a crappy operating system, so I couldn't really play it, and forgot about it.

Then, when Oblivion came out in 2006, I picked it up at release, but once again, my computer was too old and had a too crappy version of Windows to even run it. Suddenly remembering I had never taken up Morrowind, I installed that instead, and it ran like a charm, played like a dream and had me hooked for months. I finished the game (and then some), bought a new computer, installed Oblivion and continued to be enthralled for another year or so.

When Skyrim arrived, I had learned my lesson and had a brand new gaming computer waiting for it.

Generational gap and attention span. The interest in the lore had dropped off considerably. It's all about the end game now.

I'm not here because of the lore. Yes, I did play from Arena through Skyrim, even the side games.

However, I love the look of the game and it's combat system very much. It is the only aspect of TES for me, personally.

What I miss about TES from ESO is:
    • underwater swimming
    • housing
    • dueling
    • open world exploration
    • crime system
    • thieves guild
    • assassins guild
    • paladins guild
    • moving NPCs going about their daily lives
    • locked doors
    • real traps
    • large/massive dungeons (They get smaller every TES game sadly)

There are many more little things that could have been done in ESO, even in an MMO, but were just left out.

Sure, some of this might be in some day, but someday for MMOs is usually a long way down the line.

ZOS promised HUGE additions to the game every 4 to 6 weeks. That is already behind schedule.

    From your List:
    • underwater swimming (Probably not)
    • housing (Coming eventually)
    • dueling (Maybe one day)
    • open world exploration (most likely coming after the Champion system)
    • crime system (1.6  )
    • thieves guild (oh yeah it's coming  )
    • assassins guild (oh yeah it's coming  )
    • paladins guild (I don't know...)
    • moving NPCs going about their daily lives (Somewhat coming with Crime system)
    • locked doors (coming with Crime system)
    • real traps (Maybe one day)
    • large/massive dungeons (They rework the Delves and some have been getting larger)

So about 8 of those 12 are coming / are happening..

So IMHO thats pretty damn good.

Oblivion unfortunetly, I saw the teasers on xbox live and I just had to play it, it looked like much more of a serious medieval game then I was used to and the graphics where the best thing I've seen at the time.

I wish I knew about morrowind though, I remember during that time I was looking for an rpg just like that but it was a lot harder to search for games back then.

I came a bit late to the party, in June 2012. I didn't know much about Skyrim, just that it was a fantasy RPG and "really good". I got my first laptop and decided I wanted a nice game that my family computer wasn't powerful enough to run that my laptop could, and Skyrim happened to be 50% off at the store.

I was hooked right at the start. That moment when the title fades onto the screen and the music builds, I could tell I was in for something special. Little did I know that day just what I was getting into. I've now logged about 960 hours between all the games, and am a major contributor to the UESP.

I wish TESO had the inventory management like previous TES games. Oblivon and Skyrims inventory sucked. Also i want money to be an item. In Morrowind i decorated my house with stashes of gold.

Blending the disciplines of the stealthy agent and subtle wizard, I move unseen and undetected, foil locks and traps, and teleport to safety when threatened, or strike like a viper from ambush. The College of Illusion hides me and fuddles or pacifies my opponents. The College of Mysticism detects my object, reflects and dispels enemy spells, and makes good my escape. Pre-Morrowind for me, but I didn't really play either as I was too young and didn't have access to a computer... I did watch other people play Arena and whatnot though. That being said Morrowind was, and still is, my all time favourite game and I've played it for a cumulative total of several thousand hours. My first character was an Altmer caster named Mangus (because magic) who specialised in conjuration and frost spells. He was ambitious enough to join the mage's guild and house Telvanni and was skilled enough to climb through the ranks with relative ease. However, like all power hungry individuals, Mangus became a Necromancer in a feeble attempt to extended his life. I'd like to think he succeeded despite the corrupted save file.. But who knows!

The last stand alone game I played to any degree was SWOTL (Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe), I think. That was about as close to fantasy as I got.

Playing a fantasy game alone on a computer was just too strange for me...well...*mutters to self* ...I guess flying war planes is a fantasy.

Online it's another story because other people are there and, thus, the whole concept is less absurd. People are DOING those things all around you.

Thus ESO *is* The Elder Scrolls for me. My favorite part of the game, though, are things like the video below. Guess I still have work to do to get used to fantasy combat and such.

I'm a bit worried when I see that according to the poll, only 2% of the players started TES games with ESO. I would have expected a much higher percentage for Skyrim as well.
    There are several possibiities:
    1) ESO players are all TES players at heart
    2) TES games are so popular on PC that everybody has played at least one of them.
    3) Players who discovered the series with ESO don't use the forum.
    4) People lie or click to see the results instead of clicking ESO.

There are 3 types of ES players. Those that started at Morrowind, those that started at Skyrim, and those that pretend they played Arena or Daggerfall.

So as a player who started on Oblivion I don't count as an Elder Scrolls player, that makes me a saaad panda.
