I got Morrowind for free with my original Xbox. Hated it. Didn't enjoy a TES game until Oblivion, and later, Skyrim. I'm not a purist by any slight, and think having a fun, engaging and accessible MMO is more important than pleasing diehard fan boys.

Many moons ago, I played Arena and Daggerfall when I was in high school. They were both ok, but I didn't really get hooked on TES until Morrowind.

I did a poll like this earlier I found it odd (though not surprising) the people that enjoy the game and stuck around are from as far back as arena and the people who started in skyrim usually quit.

why that is? i dont know. I'll be curious to see how this poll goes.

Pre-Morrowind, really? The first two games are what establish the roots of what an Elder Scrolls game is. The series has developed from there. It's easier to please fans who accept the series is ever growing, than those who yearn to see a recreation of their favorite game in the series so far.

As for MMOs, ESO looks like it's started with a base model, than made some bold direction choices. The model they've gone with is working for me. I have neither the fondness for nor a memory of any traditional MMO elements that are absent from this game.

Generational gap and attention span. The interest in the lore had dropped off considerably. It's all about the end game now.

I'm actually surprised people from either side are sticking around. Skyrim hipsters want Skyrim 2, so they're obviously leaving. I have a good friend of mine that's an extreme casual when it comes to gaming, and he literally said that's what he expected. You can also see a lot of comments especially on IgnorantTube, of people saying "Ugh! Why didn't they just make Skyrim 2?!" Clearly not knowing this was developed by a different team...

It's surprising to see lore purists stick around, especially since this period is a vague reference in most of the other games.

I'm very interested to see how this goes.

    1994 in Arena.

It was a lass I was seeing at the time that introduced em to it. Hadn't heard about it until she showed it to me.

I was playing Earthworm Jim at the time and as soon as she showed this to me I forgot about ole Jim .... never did go back to finish it.

Back in '94, was still playing Doom, while finishing my time in college. Were I aware of Arena at the time, I'd have doubtless picked it up.

Started with Morrowind. I was an Apple desktop user in the 90s (living under my parent's roof as a kid, no choice otherwise!), and then, as an adult in college, I picked up Morrowind for like $10 on Xbox along with Shenmue II. I went Gamecube first, then PS2, then last came the Xbox that generation.

Adored Morrowind, and its still my favorite ES experience, even if it hasn't aged well... but with the glories of mods and PC gaming, I can touch it up just fine.

Since then, loved Oblivion, loved Skyrim, enjoying ESO (need much, much quicker major updates this early into its life, some inventory issues fixed, which has never been an Elder Scrolls staple), and enjoying Daggerfall in my first playthrough of it.

$10 Morrowind jewel case from Walmart...built a PC around it and it just went from there...

    GOTY followed...then Oblivion...then Skyrim...and now we're here.

Love that ever step along the way, they've done something no one else has. I don't think people realize just how many games still try to match...(Gothic, Might and Magic...)

Morrowind did for RPG what Myst did for Adventure/Puzzle games...

ESO is better than good now. I expect it will be great a year from now.

When Daggerfall and Arena came out, I was still on an Amiga...

I'm not here because of the lore. Yes, I did play from Arena through Skyrim, even the side games.

However, I love the look of the game and it's combat system very much. It is the only aspect of TES for me, personally.

What I miss about TES from ESO is:
    • underwater swimming
    • housing
    • dueling
    • open world exploration
    • crime system
    • thieves guild
    • assassins guild
    • paladins guild
    • moving NPCs going about their daily lives
    • locked doors
    • real traps
    • large/massive dungeons (They get smaller every TES game sadly)

There are many more little things that could have been done in ESO, even in an MMO, but were just left out.

Sure, some of this might be in some day, but someday for MMOs is usually a long way down the line.

ZOS promised HUGE additions to the game every 4 to 6 weeks. That is already behind schedule.

Agh! Had almost wiped those from memory, and then you dredged them forth like some nightmare.

Now recall getting the original Wing Commander to (barely) run on a x386 machine with 8 MB (megabytes, not gigabytes) of RAM and no sound card. And yeah, had to do cheetah-flips with DOS to get it to run at all.

    You had 8 MBs of RAM on your 386?? I didn't even upgrade to 4 until I got the 486 DX2 66.

Yeah, it was my uncle's office machine, and I talked him into purchasing the memory - and yeah, it was expensive as I recall.

I'm so going to get mobbed for this but...

I got Morrowind on XBox, played for a bit decided it was terrible and left it be, picked up Oblivion years later and enjoyed it until the leveling system pwned me and threw it down in frustration.
Got Skyrim on release, played the hell out of it and beat it.

I have always wanted to go back and play every TES game from the start of the series but never found the time or willpower to start it.
