A Bit obvious, but that's what it should be used for.

If you want to mock a comment you should at least do it with words, preferably quoting the comment you are mocking. That's the minimum level of courtesy for social interaction.

Personally I think that for most comment the most you should be doing is explaining why they are wrong.
But hey, I'm used to people disagreeing and mocking me.

People were clicking on disagree for all of a persons comments, and not posting why (which they were supposed to do). This lead to a highly negative feel to some threads.

So they got rid of it.

Should ... but sometimes the temptation is just too great. ;)

And, indeed, Disagree was too often used as an alternative to discussion.

Instead of making it mandatory, and using simple algorithms to keep people from just being tools.

An up and down ranking system for posts can be useful, if done right. Now, we have the touchy-feely up rank only system.

I only use lol for funny comments. If however it's ambiguous, such as someone using a joke to make a point I agree with, or someone did something amusing where a lol might sound like I was laughing at them instead of with them, I'll hit the awesome instead.

    For me,

    "Awesome" - indicates amusement

    "LOL" - indicates disagreement

So "LOL" should not just also be used to ridicule or show disagreement with a comment, but should only be used for such.

You know how disagreement is indicated in mature discussions? You actually explain your points of disagreement, instead of clicking a box. I don't know if it's the social media generation, but people need to stop being so lazy about debate.

Disagree with me? Fine. Unless you're going to actually make a point, then your disagreement is irrelevant.

An up and down ranking system for posts can be useful, if done right. Now, we have the touchy-feely up rank only system.

An Up/Down ranking system is exactly the same as agree/disagree, it just turns the whole thing into an exercise in futility. We shouldn't care how many people disagree with an idea, it's how many agree.

I don't care if nine hundred people think a suggestion is bad, you always get people disliking something because it's a change. But if if three hundred thinks it's a good idea, then I'm happy.

Small fact for you, a large portion people will automatically reject an idea/concept, but if you ignore them and make the change, two thirds of those people will accept it, or even like it. People plain simply don't know want they want.

Personally, I always interpret it as a compliment! Yep, that's right. And if you disagree, well........better not press the LOL button because it won't get your message across to me :P
