Do We Really Need to Confirm Email Deletion?

Is it realy that much of an issue...it seams like you act as if you have to walk to the corner now to delete ,then empty everyone else's trash too ...I have accidentally deleted something unread before...seems a way to avoid that ..

    Yes!

I agree that the mail interface has a lot of issues. One of the worst ones is that you can actually delete mail that you did not intend to delete because the interface can be deceptive.

The point of a confirmation dialog, as any competent GUI designer will tell you, is to allow the user to recover from making a mistake they do not realize they are making, or to allow the user to recover from a decision that they now regret. It is particularly important when the action is permanent and not recoverable, like deleting mail in ESO.

If they want to implement a method to recover lost mail, much as they implemented a way to recover items that have been sold, I am all for that solution. It completely eliminates the need for the confirmation since mail can be aged off gracefully, allowing time to recover from mistakes.

If they want to have a toggle so that the query can be turned off, that is another way to solve the problem. It is not as good as having a way to recover deleted mail, though.

Honestly, they have so many GUI design issues and blunders that I hope they address them first before returning to this one.

It'd be more important to allow one to undo a horse feeding or research within the first 5 minutes after the action.
The problem with society these days is that no one drinks from the skulls of their enemies anymore.

Someone probably has said this, but a good add on is MailR. It gets rid of this notification, adds a forward and reply button and keeps 'sent' email.

    Hey All -

I am glad so many of you find MailR useful! I would however like to caution everyone with its use. Someone has recently brought to my attention that they had a mishap with the new ummm "feature" that bypasses the dialog confirmation for deleting mail. At this point I have not been able to confirm the issue, but just in case I wanted to caution everyone to be very careful with this feature as it may pose the potential to delete things you otherwise would not have wanted.

Please keep in mind this is not actually a new feature, but some unintended consequence of not keeping up with add-on maintenance properly. I have been looking for someone to take over or at least help with MailR and HeatMapR for over a month or so now (no takers) as I have very little time to give it the TLC it deserves.

Anyway, as the author of MailR I felt obligated to issue this statement (this thread seemed to be the most active on the issue) just because of the potential severity of the new found feature. And hopefully it continues to be a useful tool for people :)

Also, if you are only using MailR for the confirmation bypass you may want to use Wykkyds Mailbox as it already has the option to toggle the confirmation.

As an aside, I learned LUA and wrote this add-on because the first day this game came out I spent an hour looking for a reply button and then traded items via mail with some rando where I got my mail quickly and he didnt receive his until the next morning so I looked like a jerk for about 12 hours with no way to prove I wasnt :(

Yes, it is. I can see it might not be an issue to everyone, especially those who do not get many mails, but I often get 50 to 60 mails a day - this means that I am spending precious in-game time deleting mails several times a day because the inbox is so small. Not wanting to press an extra key to delete mail is not some sort of laziness when you have to delete 50 to 60 emails a day, it's a recognition that the in game mail system is hugely inefficient, and that inefficiency wastes more of my time that I would rather be spending PLAYING the game. I am not paying a sub to play "mail manager 1.3", I am paying it to you know, run around and do quests and delves and PvP and all that.

EDIT: Perfect option would be to make "mail deletion confirmation" an option in settings, please please Zenimax, just let me be able to turn it off - I am not an idiot, I don't need the game to double check everything I do. At this point, I am half expecting the Zenimax equivalent of the old MS paperclip to pop up and say "it looks as though you are trying to do a self-heal in combat, would you like me to find a template for that?"

Lol I hope Zeni looks at this poll and takes it into consideration. Instead of having to confirm every delete just add an option to lock certain email. It would be much better. Kudos to the OP.

Can we get some feedback on this please? The poll is not even close to being in favor of this change. It serves no purpose for the game.

    Very simple
    1. Does email contain attachments? Require confirm delete from user
    2. Is email from another player/user? Require confirm delete from user
    3. Is email from NPC, and has no attachments? Delete email without confirm

I'm OK with confirming on delete if email has attachment, but for everything it's insanely annoying.

We don't need to confirm deletions on emails with attachments now, it is impossible to delete the email until you take the attachment.

Which is why this change is so unfathomable. Confirm delete on emails from other players may be helpful to some, but that should be a toggle also.

I can't vote for either of the options provided as I can't agree with either as written but, the confirmation is presumably just to reduce the risk of accidentally disposing of wanted attachments and it is not exactly a major chore to add one more click. Some people, as usual, are blowing this up out of all proportion, to a ridiculous extent.

How about you delete an e-mail with a COD for say 50000 gold and because of game lag the 'take all' key didn't register so you end up deleting the 50k.
Bet you'd have wanted an extra keypress then wouldn't ya. :p

You might actually have an argument if you could delete mails with attachments on them. You can't. They changed it after launch. So no, we don't want that extra key press because it's clearly not needed.

This is just another example of ZoS wasting time on something that isn't needed, wasn't asked for and ultimately annoys more players than it helps.

If they really wanted to do something about it, they would've added a trash bin where they could retrieve a recently deleted mail not like the mail would actually contain anything but still. Where as the most actively requested change to the mail system (replying to a mail) has been ignored for over 6 months!

Just be thankful that they didn't work on chat for 6 months to make it worse, and then follow that up by changing 'nades.....

Confirm delete is waste of time. Why someone keep mail saved? After 30days it will be deleted automatically and if attachment is there then u cant delete mail.

    "Confirm Email Deletion"
I understand why this might be desirable to some players.
In my case, nearly all mails are hireling or item mails, which need to be deleted quickly and often. So "Confirm Email Deletion" is just a bunch of additional useless clicks.

(I don't "hate" it, but yes it is annoying)

+1 for "There should have been an option to turn this on/off. "
Failing that, please just rollback this feature.

PS : +1 for the "reply" option.
I personally don't need it, but I see so many cases where it would be useful to a lot of people (Namely, anyone who isn't a strictly solo player).
Opinions are like buttholes : Everybody has one, and they usually stink.

    3 things to reduce stamina/magicka imbalance :
    - Use magicka to block abilities costing magicka, instead of stamina.
    - Add % damage reduction to heavy armor.
    - Add block penetration to 2H.

This was just a stupid idea. If i accidentally deleted something it's my own fault, its not like i get 200 mails a day. Even before this genius addition you couldn't delete an item anyway. So much other stuff to work on and they put this out....(palm to face)

OK, after a couple of days and about 60 emails I thought maybe I would get used to this.

Nope it still irritates me each and every time I have to confirm the delete. It's not the extra key mash so much, it's the fact that this extra key mash does nothing for me. There is no benefit to confirming a deletion of an email after the attachments are removed. None at all.

I really hope this cut down on the Customer Service Que, because this new "feature" is only of benefit to them.
That is quite perceptive of you, I had not considered that this could be where that 'fix' is coming from, laziness due to people not being careful and making complaints causing them to work harder. Now they can just ignore those deleted email complaints from people who were not careful and *** off everyone else that is likely the majority of players.

My wife and I don't sell to merchants.. With limited options. It seems ESO is built on time sink. So, you end up full all the time with merchants a mile away. My wife and I just mail to each other. She returns mine and I sort through on crafters then split the gold.

I think delete confirmation is a punishment towards those of us with two accounts that found a work around to the crappy loot, inventory, crafting space mess that is ESO.

My understanding from the statement that they gave is that it was always in the game but that a bug was preventing it from displaying. If that is true, they fixed the bug and it was likely a simple fix.

I figure if this is still present after 1.4.4 I'm done. And yes, you can haz my stuffz. I have a lot of mats and other items waiting in bags and vault, some of it bound though so can't get traded, but the rest? I don't mind flooding the market at all.

I already stopped deleting the mails from gatherers now, I just take and then log out immediately to get to next character. I'm wondering if a full inbox would prevent gatherer email.
