Craftable Torches - Woodworking Skill

AoEnwyr

In TES games I have always carried a ridiculous amount to torches in my inventory because I tend to have my settings fairly dark to enhance dungeon atmosphere. I like using torches just for immersion at night time as well so I would love to see torches added as a craftable item at wood working stations. They could be used via the quickslot or assigned their own key.

well then dark would have to be really dark
I remember when I played Dragons Dogma, when it turned night, it was really pitch black, you had a little lantern wich you had to keep fueled if you wanted to see anything, I thought it was absolutely awsome the way they did it, it really brought out the atmosphere

It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

/torch - emotive. Is that what you are looking for? Problem is you can't equip a 1-handed weapon with the emotive. :(

Was this in Morrowind? I don't remember being able craft torches in Skyrim or Oblivion. Sounds like a cool idea tho. I agree that it would have to be pretty dark in order for people to have to use them. Not regular out in the wilds dark either where you get starlight/moonlight, but deep dungeon or cave dark where there's nothing else to throw light. This would certainly throw an interesting twist on battles. Fighting blind (in the dark) would be crazy fun!

Re Grue: not sure what that is, but it sounds nasty and not at all something I'd like to take on alone. Do they live under kids' beds? Cause I think I mite have had one as a kid. XD

Anyway, good idea. I'd be all for it!

Torches were not in morrowind afaik.

/torch works well enough, too bad you can't move while using it.

This game doesn't really need torches though, it's not that dark even inside of caves and at night.

This thread brought back fond memories of my human druid in EQ1 stumbling around in the dark trying to get through an unlit tunnel out of Surefall Glade and out into the world to adventure and getting so turned around bumping into walls that I ended right back where I started several times.

It's a reference to an old text-only computer game called Zork. That line is what the game told you. If you asked what a grue was you got more of an explanation. Sure enough, if you didn't get a torch or get someplace with some light, you would be eaten by a grue. Yes, I realize I'm dating myself by admitting to have played text-only computer games...

They haven't been craftable (well not without a mod anyway) but I felt it would be nice to add to the Woodworking system in ESO.

Yea Dwarf Fortress adventure mode had some pretty nasty baddies that came out at night. They'd chase you until ti was light again too. I think I got powerful enough on several characters to actually kill them tho.

Dwarf Fortress is really the best game ever.

    Yes, there were torches

    http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Torch_(Morrowind)

    There were even lanterns too.

    http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Lantern_(Morrowind)

Nice thing about them, if you held them in hand, they had a life expectancy. But, if you lit them, then put them on the ground, they would glow or burn forever. I made some nice mood lighting in my house with the Lanterns. They had a blue or red or yellow glow.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I put some in unlit fireplaces in my Oblivion houses for both atmosphere and that nice crackling noise :)

That's cool. Don't feel bad. I used to play a game called Utumno (not sure of the spelling). Pure text. Kids would never give it a second look today, but I'm an old D&D fan so it didn't bore me. It was more like a story than a computer game. Sort of like the old "choose your own adventure" books we used to get at the school library. Lol! Now that's old. Too old for even for any kind of graphics! Haha! Man I'm old :-(

They need to make /torch work while we are moving. When you pull your weps out it goes away. I would be satisfied with that.
Force weapon swap to have priority over EVERYTHING. Close enough.
Make stamina builds even with magicka builds.
    Disable abilities while holding block.
Give us a REASON to do dungeons more than once.
Remove PVP AoE CAP. It is ruining Cyrodiil.
Fix/Remove Forward Camps. They are ruining Cyrodiil.
Impenetrability needs to REDUCE CRIT DAMAGE. Not negate entire builds.
Werewolf is not equal to Vamps/Bats.

I am also in favour of this feature. The Torch could be used as a weapon too, and slotted like we slot a dagger or whatever on the second hand; But Zenimax already knows that, it's a games studio after all. If a dungeon is too dark, just make those torches, lamps or braziers lit with our torch-weapon. Some of us prefer the adventure side of this games as opposed to the leveling and grind. This could be the potential to become best MMO ever. It already has the graphics, the Lore the tradition. It needs more game mechanics where players can create their own style of gameplay.

I remember torches and you could even pick up NPC's candles and candelabras and use them as a light source. And it wasn't a mod to that I remember -not the torches at least. You can even see torches used in the official Morrowind trailer.

But yeah, the game doesn't desperately -need- usable torches, but people would like them and would add to the game. It's not even an unrealistic request. Even if they were to just make /torch work like how NPC can walk with a torch.

As I keep saying, it's a fairly trivial change to make the dark levels darker from the engine standpoint.

Torch mechanics and pitch black / dark areas/nighttime have been working since SNES days. This is not difficult to put in.

It would add a tremendous amount of fun to the gameplay.

But on topic, when I first started playing, at console launch, I was really wanting torches but I quickly got over it. Torch emote works okay for meetings etc.

The fact that torches weren't a integral in their environment design (dark nights, spooky dungeons, etc.) says a LOT about how little ZOS cares about environmental immersion.
