Is LOL is unofficial downvote option?

It depends on the post. If there is nothing obviously intended to be funny in the post, then LOL means "I'm laughing at you."
Same here. Except for myself, i'm just a really funny guy ...

I use LOL as a downvote, unless the comment I am responding to was meant to be genuinely funny.

As others mentioned. Use actual words to convey your own opinion. Voting down someone's opinion simply because you do not like it is immature. If they are incorrect then provide the facts ... nothing more.

Stop being lazy and judgmental. There was a time when conversation and debate was a sign of maturity and intelligence. People now go out of their way to avoid using their brains for both communication and enlightenment. Sad days.

The ONLY voting that should go on here is through polls. This is not a rating game. It is a discussion forum.

It's pretty simple: did the post actually make you laugh?

    If so - click LOL.

If it didn't - why click it?

I click LOL if the post actually makes me laugh. If not, I click something else, or nothing at all.

It's a silly forum bean-counter. Just do what feels right.

I'd much rather have the disagree button back instead of the LOL button, it becomes heavily abused in my opinion.

Seen lots of well thought out posts that aren't intended to be funny having lots of LOL's, it's annoying really.

The disagree button would be exactly the same. Some people just want to down everything they see for the LuLz.

Gee whiz Wally. I make a post about a topic that has been made 100 times and I wonder why it is talked about so much. Oh yeah and I bump my own thread for more visibility. :smirk:

Nah, I use for it genuine LOL moments. If I disagree with something and I feel strongly enough about it I'll post a disagreement, not push LOL. But some of the humorous stuff that comes up on this forum is damn entertaining and deserves a bona fide LOL and more.

There is no downvote option, there are only upvotes. All of them grant a point to the poster's points total, which are used for awarding badges and stars.

The only downvote, if you want to call it that, is to ignore a post.

No, lols do not grant points directly as the other options. There may be some points awarded for a certain number of lols from badges but those points are insignificant compared to the other things that grant points.

I think people who want a "Dislike" button are afraid to admit they feel more inclined to troll when they don't have a "Dislike" button. I remember in Beta, I wasn't posting a lot of negativity.

Some people were really thought provoking in their posts and I would often just click "Agree" or "Disagree" and leave some 2-word "I Agree!" or "No Thanks!" and I would feel happy.

Yet without that button when I find something that really hits me, I feel inclined to hit back. Without a "downvote" to hit back with, my only recourse is the "LOL" button and if I use it, I feel inclined to justify the use.

I wish it weren't so. I am better than this, I promise.

It is more about Censorship. I feel the lack of a dislike button is one of the most Orwellian constructs. You can agree but not disagree. 10 words for YES and 0 words that conceptually mean NO. I feel censored, even though I am not really being oppressed by anybody. It is hard to explain.

I only like using the "Dislike" button when I just want to say nothing but still have my dissent in some small way be noted.

Thanks for taking the time to read that though.

    And thanks for posting it.

There's nothing stopping you from disagreeing. There's just not a button for it. It is, after all, a discussion forum, and not a popularity contest. Do you remember that they used to post a list of the top 10 ranked posters? They've even taken out the "Best Of..." page, which, to my mind, was a good move.

And it's not about censorship, either. You have a lot of freedom to express your opinion, just not the option to be abusive about it. There were downvote buttons in the past, and, like on other social sites, they were heavily abused by a very opinionated and aggressive core of players. Zenimax was right to remove them and institute a more proactive approach to moderation. Given how negative these forums can get, I'm glad they did.

There are other forums with active discussions about ESO that do have downvote buttons. This forum isn't intended to be the be-all and end-all of ESO discussions; you have options.

I would rather they got rid of the LoL button than brought back the Disagree button, they got rid of disagree for a reason, and unless people have changed (which they haven't) it should stay gone.

Edit~ I don't actually mind the lol button, I think people who misuse it are idiots, and ignore it as a negative. If you can't be bothered to say why you disagree, then I can't be bothered to notice or care.

I do notice and care about those who reply to me though, might not agree with them, but I listen.

LOL = funny (positive) or ludicrous (negative)

If the post is witty and humorous, I'll give in LOL... but if the premise or argument is ludicrous, I'll give that an LOL too... I don't take offense to getting the negative LOL's though. It usually means I was too drunk to be posting on the forums in the first place.
