Sound issue

Talking to someone on skype using headphones to hear them. Booted game. All of the game sounds are instead (faintly) coming through my speakers rather than the headphones.

It wasn't doing this earlier today.

Any idea how to troubleshoot it? (I've been through all of the usual PC troubleshooting, no love there.)

Thank you.

Does the headset that you use have its own individual drivers associated with it? If so, we recommend checking to see if there have been any updates to those drivers. You may also want to check if there have been any firmware updates pushed recently for the headset you use.

As I said, it was working fine just a couple hours before... (No, not a fancy headset).

BTW - weird thing - when I got off skype, it went back to putting the sound through the headphones. This is a whole lot of WTF.

So we can better assist you, what is the make and model of your PC? You may check if your headphones are enabled as a playback device. To do this, please see the steps below:
    1. Click the Start Pearl and then type Sound in the Start search box.
    2. Select Sound in the Start Menu Options.
    3. Next, under the Playback Tab, right click and select Show Hidden Devices and Show Disconnected Devices if available.
    4. Select Headphones and enable

Also, verify that the mute when in background option on your sound card/game/3rd party app is not enabled.

Dell Inspiron 15z Ultrabook. Everything in the 'sound' tab looking good. Only looking at FB and playing ESO on the day of the 'big change'.

Is this for real? The make and model of my (and millions of other gamers) PCs is "built it myself".

That might not be exactly what Zenimax wants to hear, but I know exactly what went in my rig, because I chose every component and put it there myself (and cut my knuckles on a sharp edge in the case in the process*) and I have 25 years experience in building gaming PCs.

*(just waiting to be told by Zenimax that the appaling framerate I have been experiencing might be due to blood from my knuckles on the components!)

Epona was a Romano-Celtic goddess dating back to around 1800 to 2000 years before computer games were invented.

Skype has an option to turn down all other sounds (the volume) when your on skype. You just need to change the setting.

Thanks, but I already checked it. It does not change the sound volume.

As I said before, it was working normally on the *same day* and now, it does not.

Through wild experimentation, I fixed it. Found out skype was being evil.

In case anyone else has this problem, in skype go to options -> audio settings -> Speakers. Try one and then the other. To see if it works, hit the white play button in the green circle. This puts the Skype ring tone on. If you can't hear the game, it is still fubar. if you can, all is well.

Thanks to those who tried to help.

    Had this issue myself.

    Windows 7

Go to Control Panel / Sound / Communications

You have a choice of what you want Windows to do when you receive a call (Skype etc).

Default is to mute other sounds.

    Set it to "Do Nothing"

    :)

Oh dear, sorry mate, somats adrift somewhere then.

Skype can be a bit of a pillock with settings at times, I was getting lots of hiss and found that it was not only adjusting my mic level but was also whacking the mic boost up full tilt too.

I've had another look but can't see any other settings that would cause this.

I appreciate the effort. I can't figure out why the game sound wants to come out of the headphones when I am not on skype but out of the speakers when I am.

    It's sad and frustrating.

Hi there, @Logan9a. Thanks for your patience thus far! Have you ensured, in the Playback tab of your Sound options, that your headphones are set to the sole default device?

I personally had some headphones years ago which would do the same thing (audio through headset when not on a call, audio through speakers while on a call) and it ended up being a setting in my headset's driver/program. Could we ask what headset you are using?

As you can see from the above pic, my headphones and speakers are on the same device. I've no idea why. I've tried the other device but then I can't hear the game at all.

As for the headphones, cheap 'ear buds' I plug into the computer. Have a couple different pair I tested out with this. They aren't advanced enough to have their own problems, sadly.

Oddly it seems to be working right now. I don't know what is going on with this crazy stuff. More if I find out more.
