No. I've been part of many a forum with "downvotes" all it does is inevitably get people angry

Exactly the reason they shouldn't and won't be implemented.

Personally I find clicking "LOL" on an offensive post has basically the same effect. Otherwise, I consider actually posting a well-thought reply to be the appropriate equivalent to "disagree."

Unless they are trolls. Then you just ignore them until they get jaded with no one paying attention to them and go away.
It only has the same effect if the people being lol'd understand your motives, and the people reading along at home don't think you just found something amusing and fun.

Personally, I'd just rather have an ignore button and be done with it.

I shouldn't be allowed to click an agree or yes button if there isn't a no button. This is a troll tactic of companies to minimize negative communication and try to "kid down" the environment. You can thank Facebook for this model.

I say anything I am allowed to express Yes, i should be allowed to express NO.

    Disagree. Now here's why:

A troll tactic is to click "disagree" without bothering to expound upon a reason why. You wouldn't do so face-to-face (at least not without the other person thinking you're a moron), so why should you do so on an internet forum?
You clearly make a good point, one I skipped as being too hard for me to sum up as clearly as you did.

A disagree button that requires a minimum of (~)50 characters of nonrepeating text might/would satisfy that to a certain degree.

The problem with society these days is that no one drinks from the skulls of their enemies anymore.

People keep mentioning an Up or Down vote (yes I know it's from another website). For me the problem with a down vote, is that it's just a soft version of the disagree, with elements of a popularity vote added.

The people getting the down vote still need to know what's wrong with it, and popularity fudges everything into an incomprehensible quagmire.

*nods Alex, same sheet really. I just would prefer the up/down to simple "disagree" - but very marginally.

I think folks would have to see how it worked in practice to really get an idea. Quagmire is a good word for it.

Once upon a time there was a disagree button. This became subject to abuse and so the powers that be made an executive decision to remove the button. Now we just voice our dissagrences.
And so did many brave men, women, and beast fall to the end of Beta, never to be heard from again. All that is left, is whispers of the adventures they had.
