Can you play the way you want?

I play however i want yes. Dont know wth all the noise is on this thread but you can pretty much do w/e you want. If keep thinking that every class and every skill should work for every situation then you might as well just play another game.
At 180 skill points i change my skills based on a fight or event all the time. Im playing the way i want- i can go resto/1h/2h/ heavy or light armor, and i have 3 class trees that each focus in a specific kind of attack/build. Then i can mix them all together.

Im a nice guy but seriously....l2p and stop acting like you are owed something because your terrible build isnt working. Not every build is going to work.

Yes, you can and always were able to.

Not sure why people conclude that playing the way you want to should result in being able to experience all content and being successful at each.

-By design you can play solo, with others, grouped, attempt very hard content, play within your level and even stay in content below your level.

*I will say that the grouping (zoning) issues should not be as they are today.

People should think about their choices and that other people make similar and different choices which all effect our experience when playing online games.

Your choices may be good, but also may result in forced adjustments if you want to experience certain content, quests or encounters.

Until we can group every instance, that's what the "noise" is all about ... at least for me. Being forced into solo-only play is not "play as you want" for me, especially when that crap is part of the main-quest.

The trend is those who take a balanced approach or who split their weapon swap or skill bar to allow them to play solo in all encounters will also be viable players in dungeons and PvP.

You can play any way you want to play but that is not without sucking if you have made poor decisions and take poor approaches to encounters.

If you want to be even remotely competitive, this game provides you with much fewer options than any of the 'old-school' class-based MMOs like WoW. Which is riddiculous as build variety should be the selling point of any LAS game.

I would greatly disagree having played quite a few MMO's since 1997.
If you are approaching this game like its a typical MMO, that is most likely why you feel this way. The game is a massive multi-player online but MMO isn't a type of game its an type of experience and access to a game.

The game takes most of its concepts from a single player game TES.
It removes the stereotypical tanks = this, DPS = this and healers = this and allows you to define how those three roles work for you.

Try playing and building your character as if there is no group content. In essence you will favor a play style but need to have 1 or 2 other options of attack or approach.

IF YOUR CHARACTER can only play one role, this is why you struggle. You may not be able to heal an entire group but you should at least be able to heal yourself. You may not be great at ranged but you should have at least one ranged attack option in addition to a stun or knock back. You may not be able to stand in a fight in melee but you should be able to engage in close range and keep mobs off you if your not built for melee.

Not saying you're doing it wrong but I am saying if your expectation is WoW or Guild Wars, DAoC, Final Fantasy, etc. this is not that type of game.

By design the developers intentionally developed a game that is not like those but that has some relevance of those games.

I also wanted to go through dungeons in my own time being sneaky with my bow. But nope... here comes another train of players.

    Completely immersion breaking.

I see your point of view which is valid considering TES model. I've made a stamina based character and used a low of stamina based weapons and abilities BUT how far in the game are you?

once you get weapon swap you should be able to play 100% stamina based but your experience and approach will not use class abilities or spells.

I think your idea of how to play will work but its tends to work better around 15 and later.

No! I don't see a dwemer mech suit armed with dual belt fed projectile launchers. Though I can get something like that in black gold, even if it's so lacking on the steampunk alliance side. On a serious note, you can play as you want as long as you pretend there aren't veteran levels.

Working with Molag Bal to bring destruction upon Nirn? Yeah, I might sign up for that, even if it meant eventually being on the losing side.

After all, folks could sign up with the Sith Empire in SWTOR, even though we all know they eventually lost to the Republic.

By design the devs threw together a bunch of skills with no plan, forethought or balancing and hoped players would come up with many interesting ways to play and make things work... Players did. They found that if they used cloth/staff, they were significantly more effective than with any other playstyle. If I equip medium and daggers I can do crap dps... if I equip staff and light I can do that and everything else and excel. So, I see your point... yes... mhm...

Just made it to VR8 on my supposedly broken NB who is dual wielding in 7/7 medium armor. Ive done 95% of the VR content that I've done playing solo (excluding dark anchors, world bosses, and public dungeons, obviously) and I feel like Im doing fine.

Then again, I have no intention of doing group dungeons or trials, so I'm not looking to min/max.

I have the stick/dress alts (templar healer who would have worn those things anyway because I wanted her to be the archtype healer, and a DK because I was going for the former/renounced cultist slash fire mage character) and I still enjoy my nightblade more, regardless of how despondent and fed up Im told I should be over their current state.

Nope. Want to group all content, but cannot do so. Has nothing to do with being competitive or effective - it's an MMO, and I want to play cooperatively all the way through. If I wanted to solo the content, I've got an impressive library of single-player games from which to pick.

    So the answer remains no.

Play the way you want is misconstrued. It means you can equip any armour, any weapon, and any of your class skills. The game wont stop you doing any combination but it doesn't promise they will all be viable. Ok so stamina builds are not working. They are working on that.
