Seasonal Holiday Events based on Tamriellic Calendar

The developers really need to consider adding seasonal holidays events for special occasions, which are based on the Tamriellic Calendar. This is not only important from a design decision, but also important from a business design (re-subbing for new content to enjoy). Adding holiday events also makes the world feel more alive while giving players more content to enjoy, such as holiday specific quests, achievements, recipes, etc. Listed below are some holidays Zenimax could add to ESO...

Source: imperial-library.info/content/calendar-tamriel

New Life Festival - January
Today the people of Tamriel are having the New Life Festival in celebration of a new year. The tradition of free ale at all the taverns of Tamriel continues.

Heart's Day - February
This holiday is celebrated all over Tamriel as Heart's Day. It seems that in every house, the Legend of the Lovers is being sung for the younger generation.

The Day of the Dead - April
The superstitious say that the dead rise on this holiday to wreak vengeance on the living.

Merchants's Festival - July
The bargain shoppers of the known world are out in force today and it is little wonder, is a holiday called the Merchants's Festival. Every marketplace and equipment store has dropped their prices to at least half.

Harvest's End - August
Perhaps no other festival fires the spirit of Tamriel as much as the one held today, Harvest's End. The work of the year is over, the seeding, sowing, and reaping. Now is the time to celebrate and enjoy the fruits of the harvest, and even visitors to the celebrated region are invited to join the farmers. The taverns offer free drinks all day long, an extravagance before the economy of the coming winter months.

Witches's Festival - October
Known throughout Tamriel as the Witches's Festival when sorcery and religion clash.

Warriors Festival - November
Most all the local warriors, spellswords, and rogues come to the equipment stores and blacksmiths where all weapons are half price.

New Life Festival - December
Originally a holiday for a long forgotten god of debauchery, it has become a time of gift giving, parties, and parading.

I was always a fan of festive events in MMOs (WoW and GW2 really did them well) I'd love to see them in ESO. They add fluff and emersion into the game... bring on the festivities ! ! !

Can't be done given the day/night cycles implemented in the game.

  • murklor007neb18_ESO
Aye, holiday events in GW2 was really something you looked forward too and made you want to play the game until the next one. It wasnt just decorating the world either, no. Halloween brought entire instances and questlines. Wintersday was ever more impressive with silly PvE and PvP instances, not to mention the puzzles.

And lets not forget the best thing in any MMO, period - Super Adventure Box.

I want ZOS to make some fun events, but they're just not going to match SAB, lol.

Rubbish, no reason this would effect festive events at all !

Let's say ZOS put in the Fire Festival which is on the 20th of Second Seed. If the Tamrielic calendar lined up with our calender, that would be on May 20th.

So when would 'May 20th' be in-game? There are three Tamriel days in every 24 hour period.

Maybe they can stretch each Tamrielic holiday over three days Tamriel time. The heck with the immerision purists. :)
  • babygirl4595ub17_ESO
I don't get the "day and night" reason for not having it in game, there are other games that have the shortened days and nights in their games and they still have holidays and festivals.

In every MMO I've played (that's a lot over the last 20 years...lol) festive events have always been longer than their real timeframes. Normally this is because not every player would be able to log in on just on 'set day'. Making an event longer helps all the players have a chance of enjoying the content.
As for this games day/night cycle its a cosmetic thing not calendar related.

In other games, they have the latitude to create holidays. In eso, there is a calendar of holidays which already exists. The immersion purists who wanted the day/night cycles would probably object to having the same Tamriel 'day' with three day/night cycles.

Or maybe they realize that nitpicky immersiveness isn't that important to most players. Count me as one who wanted an option to toggle off day/night cycles in the game. Let others wander around in semi-darkness if they want to.

And yeah screw the immersion crap with day-night cycle "issues", because like it's been said, MMO game events last longer than one day.

I'd really like to see some holiday themed events in ESO such as festivals, quests, collectibles, recipes, etc.

We don't have player housing as of yet in ESO but I enjoy decorating my estate whenever holidays such as Frostfell or Nights of the Dead roll around in EQ2. The various holiday costumes are pretty sweet too. Hopefully those sorts of things will be available to us at some point.

Yes, some minor festivals and observances historically happened many times a year (see Ember days) while others had a main "day" but celebrations that lasted days or weeks (Ramadan, Passover, Christmas, etc). No reason either lore-wise or practical-wise something couldn't be done to spread things out to match people's schedules.

The list is essentially American Holidays (plus one Mexican Hol), if they introduce this they need it to add some European Hols, like the Equivalent of St Swithins day, or All Fools Day.

Actually All Fools Day would work excellently, it's a day were traditionally masters and servants reversed roles.

Rubbish. The developers can make each holiday last for approximately 1 week, with major events lasting two weeks in real time. The day/night cycle does not matter too much. The developers can make it work, don't worry.

I'd love for this to happen. The most immersive thing you can have in an MMO is something different, something unexpected. The real world never stands still, it's always changing and to make an MMO last you need to have some of that sort of realism going on.

Not to many though, just a few that coincide with real life holiday events but keep them in lore events in ESO.

Yes, but since this is a European/American game half of them should be European holidays, like Bastille Day, or St George's Day(I know not actually a hol, but you get the idea).

Hols that both US and EU share would be counted to both sides to keep the tab fair.

We could also have some good old fashioned seasonal songs, like...

On the twealth day of Tamriel, my true love gave to me..
    12. Argonians
    11. Bosmer
    10. Dark Elves
    9. High Elves
    8. Nords
    7. Bretons
    6. Khajit
    5. Orcs
    4. Wood Elves
    3. Redguard
    2. Imperials
    And a Dark prince that's just a fairy !

Then there are other favourites such as-

Tis the season to get jolly... Always popular with the nords !

Oh little town of Betnikh... Orcs like this one

Jingle bells... a Khajiit one (after all what cat doesn't like bells)

Silent night... mainly for those who are tracking werewolves....lol

I'm ok with holidays if they re ambience. If its some lame grindfest that is immersion breaking like in most games I'd really rather not see it. Holidays in games wear me out, and pull me away from my social life (and other people) at times when they should and often must draw closer to their families. To this end I hope this is one area where Elder Scrolls stands apart from the crowd.

It does not have to be a grindfest. Instead it could add atmosphere and fluff to towns and cities, with a few holiday items, quests and achievements. Nothing over the top, just something a little extra to make the world feel more alive.
