"Please send me a whisper if you see any bots".... But how?

Twice now I have seen the system anouncement from GMs asking for whispers to bot locations. Both times I was around some bots and tried to whisper the GM... To no avail. You can't click on their name, and /w @name results in "account not found", and /w name does nothing. So I'm curious how to send the whisper. I'm guessing this is not working as intended.

I've only seen GM's once (in wow). They turned us into giraffes and maggots. t.t

That's so not intuitive.
Neither is the silly /w for 'whispering' someone. You can't whisper to someone across a continent.
/t for Tell used to be far more popular, and at least you didn't feel stupid typing it.
(p.s. My point is that it's just a game mechanic. Some MMOs have had commas in them before when sending tells to people - it actually seemed perfectly intuitive on them).
