I personally have developed a deep and heart-felt hatred for ZOS customer support....

I extremely dislike them as an entity at this point, too. It's bizarre how much of a negative difference a few days of customer dissatisfaction can make.

This is all part of the game.

I've never seen a game that is so awful at 1) announcing server down times and 2) giving people SOME IDEA of how long you will be down for. I, as well as many other people, are frustrated after paying for this game and not being at least told how long it would be down. Please, please improve this! Thanks.

LOL that's all i can say. This is pretty much every game when they do a hot fix. People are having all there gear vanish. The longer the servers were left up the more they would have to go back in and fix accounts. As far as a time frame I'd like one even if they are off by an hour. Toss out 2 hours when you bring them down then update 5 minutes before that you need more time. Keeps the nerd rage a bit lower.

This is an unplanned urgent intervention. Maybe they should say so and give a clue of what they are fixing to calm folks.

I assume they are fixing the server side lag. It could be as simple as a screwed up router or as bad as a server side memory leak. A router is fixed quite quickly (especially if they have it on-hand) but a memory leak requires them to reboot the server whenever it gets to bad until they locate and fix it.

I honestly don't think anyone who posts these type of threads has never been involved in the launch of a game. There is random downtime of server(s) for maintenance with no ETA. Asking for one doesn't help, it requires the devs to be bothered to answer these questions when they need to fix issues to get the server(s) back up. The first 6 months of a game launch will be like this, all we can do is settle down and be patient. After that usually devs start scheduling maintenance with down time and ETA's.

This isn't the dawn of this technology, that excuse is tired.

While most of the posts on the forums right now are just whining, I have to agree with this. I'd say many MMOs are annoyingly indefinite about their emergency/unscheduled downtimes. It's fine if its a problem that you've got almost no bearing on how long it might take.

The problem is when you use the same nondescript message for a >5 minute restart, a downtime that will very likely take less than an hour or a downtime that ends up taking hours. If it's a serious problem with the hardware, say that your servers may be down for an extended period of time, if not "several hours".

You have a problem that you think might take 15 minutes to fix, but you don't want to make empty promises. Say it can may take at least an hour. Even if your estimate exceeds the actual downtime, it's still better than leaving people in the dark. Many people will assume, without any indication of how long it MIGHT take, that it will be a short time until the servers are back. Saying you'll post updates, and essentially bumping your updates with more "hang on"s just maintains that expectation. Leaving players in the dark is just as bad as quoting them short downtimes, then failing to deliver.

All in all, the vaguest estimate would probably be nice. "This may take [at least] several hours, [or more]". Overestimating is better than nothing.

And just to be clear, this isn't an attack on this game's staff or operation, specifically. It's part of a boarder mentality, along the lines of "We should make the label on our package as generic as possible to avoid being sued for false advertising". IE covering your butt to try to save face. Just be as honest with people as you can [realistically] be.

Just to be clear, tonight's maintenance was unscheduled and is addressing the issues that players were running into including lag, long loading times, problems logging in, and missing items.

Hope this helps clear up any confusion. Thanks. :)

It was unplanned (as indicated by your post of the planned downtimes...) and they are fixing the server lag and login problems. Zoning was taking 5 minutes and many people could not log in.

    Well said.

One thing I loved about WoW was when they'd have server issues they'd say, maintenance till 4:00 PM and bring them up at like 1:30 PM.

    Did that all the time.

Give us some kinda time please, if you dunno, tell us, "it may take up to several hours." Better than saying, "will give you an update on an ETA for the update."

That's my point. They did their normal "Hi, we're going offline right now so leave a message at the beep!" copy pasted message, then they had enough 12 year olds complaining about it that they felt they needed to clarify why. And it's obviously a severe enough problem that the downtime was nessecary, but not everybody experienced the bugs. That leads to 2 points, with a problem this severe it's likely going to take some time. It'd be really nice to emphasize that.

Also, not everybody experienced the glitches, and the lag wasn't an isolated incident for the servers since launch. That means anybody who was fortunate enough to just experience the lag, which may very well have seen before on ESO, are left in the dark as to why the servers go down. If you don't want to spitball the time at ALL, then at least be clearer on why you're going down both ingame, and on your status feeds/initial posts/whatnot.

do you think that if they had one the would have given it out? First ident the problem and figure out how to fix, then estimate how long to fix and apply fix. That is when they know an eta. Not right when they down the server. Would you rather they lie and say...12 hours when they have NO idea yet?

If they lied and said 12h people would find other things to do. Right now we're wondering if it'll be another 5 minutes or not?

So your advice from now is to lie about ETA during downtimes to make people feel better. That sounds pretty damn stupid

I disagree. We at least need to know if we should keep refreshing, the same page over and over to check if it's up, (which many people will do), or if we should just give up and walk away for hours. Some estimate is better than none at all.
