AWA what is happening

Whilst they are reviewing achievements, it would be nice to have some new titles based on occupations, such as Alchemist, Blacksmith, Enchanter etc. Not all of my characters are out saving the world every day.

Also, I’m halfway through Cadwell’s Gold and whilst I fully appreciate that people do not want this to change, it’s a little contradictory that AWA is happy for any character to contribute to general questing, but this is for one character only to complete.

Like, there's info stored that has no big meaning for a playthough at all (number of received hireling letters?!), while things that would be interesting has obviously not been stored.

Because Hireling letters were already recorded as part of the lore library and have been for years.

The AWA has removed any incentive to redo things on alts. Then why do the beginner quest givers "stalk" me to do them over and over again again.

They should recognize that I've done them before and leave me alone!!!

And I have Never thought the AWA was a good thing.

I'll start by saying I love AWA because they make alts playable again. That being said, I am motivated by any achievement so I was motivated to do a few things to get these new achievements.

There’s nothing you can do to get the hireling achievements except to maybe get hirelings on alts, which I did anyways for free money… and then you just wait.

What about the survey achievements? Do you typically just delete your surveys or not do writs and now feel motivated to do them? There’s already motivation to do surveys and it’s once again monetary. Upgrade mats.

What about doing 500 antiquities? Do you feel motivated to go level scrying and excavating to reach 500 or do you already dig up antiquities because you go out and get them or pick them up randomly and want to dig them up before they expire?

Do you really want to go visit a guild store in every zone?

I couldn’t find all of the *72* new achievements, but these are a few frustrating ones, because I do not see how they have any motivational impact whilst AWA literally murdered dungeon replayability in cold blood.

Honestly, it feels like they had a studio contest for new Achievement ideas. :disappointed:

I really can't see why I would care if I have received 500 hireling emails. Unearthing 500 Antiquities feels like trivia, but I can see that one more than the hireling emails. As for the Guild Store Shopper, I don't even want to know why they would even want to track that.

Oh thx for explaining why all these random achievements kept popping up when I first logged in from U43 update. I guess they are appealing to "completionists". I don't even bother with the ones that offer nice mounts.

And where's "Hamstrung" - awarded for successfully logging in after update 35?

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but u35 only really had a noticeable affect on the extreme over 100k dps players, and 95% of all player base was really unchanged. I parsed just before u35 and then the day of the patch, and my dps was slightly higher after u35. It is fashionable to bag on u35, but I don't feel like it had any real tangible consequences.

For reference, at the time I was an average dps player.... not sure what average is now.

That's the problem, really. There's this accepted idea that the top end players don't matter, which is what the effects of U35 are really all about. There must be reward for honing skills but with U35 (and several nerfs to pre-buffing that we keep getting patch after patch), the skill level to reach peak is being dropped. Instead of giving poor performing players tools to become better performers, the highly performing players get dropped down to reduce the gap. The insult was enough to bring trial servers to a near-halt with how many people left the game, and some servers did not survive U35. This has trickle-down effects that are still prevalent now. There are more runs, but not quite like it was before, and it seems people are now less likely to bring players they don't know into content as "raising the floor" got players the parses they need easier than before, which also leads to more people who refuse to improve getting into content they aren't ready for just because they can parse higher than before and are tankier.
I feel like arcanist did more for reducing the gap than U35 did, and while people are growing tired of arcanist, it is far less insulting than what happened then and continues to happen. All players, even the top 1% matter, especially when those people are the ones training people and making guides on how to do new content.

lol I love reading them. I'm sad that Gavin Gavonne stopped sending them, because his were always hysterical to read. I also very much enjoy Urbek inventing the printing press and the whole character development Orbinor's gone through. Pacrooti is just as annoying as he is in the Crown Store though, but he did get me to laugh a few times.

Someone definitely had fun writing all of those stories.

My favorite Parcrooti mail was when…
…he tried molasses for the first time, liked them, and then resolved to try other parts of the mole.

My point was not that the top end players don't matter, my point was two fold. 1) for the majority of players u35 didn't matter and therefore there was no actual justification to hate on it and 2) the people affected by u35 had so much damage anyway it didn't matter if they got nerfed 10%.... or 20%. A trial team made up of 8 dps doing 125k dps can complete the same content that a group of 8 doing 100k dps can do.

And as far as a mass exodus from the game, the numbers don't really show that to be true. Per steam charts, may of 2022 shows an average of 13,749 players, may of 2024 shows13,795.

Also, they did give lower performers a way to improve... oakensoul.

    Agree.
I have not played my alts since the AwA controversy. I decided to give them another try with the new Scribing addition. Still salty about AwA. It still has messed up my dungeon play, knowing what bosses and WB's I've done, etc. Pretty much the same as the 3,000+ responses we gave back then why to not do it.
Oh well, water under bridge. No going back now, just just play less.

@katanagirl1, I believe you can view motif completion in the Lore Books section on each alt. I haven't gotten into Scribing yet, but if those as the scripts you refer to, I'm pretty sure the release notes explained how to see which have been completed. Just trying to help.

I'm not going to respond to the other comment since I don't want to go too off topic into U35 when this is about AWA.

My point was, there's already motivations to do some of the things that the new achievements are for and for the hireling achievements there is nothing you can actually do to make the achievement go faster except to unlock it on alts and log on them all every day. It's basically a passive achievement. There was no need for these new achievements.

I am not talking about most people when I say the replayability of a dungeon is murdered in cold blood. I am talking about me, I am talking about my friends, and I am talking about my acquaintances. AWA killed dungeon endgame, that is my problem with it. People used to go and get hardmode clears on multiple characters and trifecta clears on multiple characters. I have seen with my own eyes that this motivation died out, and now people do not re-run trifectas unless it's to get someone else the trifecta or it's done accidentally. The dungeon community is quiet. There is no score for dungeons and thus no scorepushing community like there is with trials once people have completed all the trifectas, so people moved onto trials instead. There are only two dungeons a year now. So, the dungeon community gets 2 dungeons that get trifecta'd in mere days or weeks (because dungeon hardmodes do not seem to be balanced around what high performance is in a dungeon) and nothing else besides farming the same dungeons repeatedly the entire year because now that the achievement is obtained there's no point in re-running it on another character or even another role.

AWA caused issues in many communities but as far as I can tell the impact hit hardest when it comes to dungeons, fishing, and people who care about specific-character achievements, to the point that these areas are basically obliterated.

That is what adds replayability for most people.... Now, that being said, I enjoy getting all the achievements from a dungeon, and now I don't have to do them all on my main to get credit. I can do them on my main, or my DK or my Sorc. Doesn't matter, I get credit.

Sounds like a good QoL change would be to fully describe and ask for a dungeon leaderboard. Might help get your dungeon replayability back.

I was angry when they added the dlc larceny achievements. I can’t see what motifs and scripts are learned on my alts, though the game keeps track of that. There just isn’t room for important stuff like that.

@katanagirl1, I believe you can view motif completion in the Lore Books section on each alt. I haven't gotten into Scribing yet, but if those as the scripts you refer to, I'm pretty sure the release notes explained how to see which have been completed. Just trying to help.

Yes, that is true. I keep forgetting about that. I’m not sure about the scripts, though. I just log in one alt after another until I find one who doesn’t know it.

Every new pointless tiny achievement we get I feel insulted by. AWA killed dungeon endgame. That’s not worth adding achievements that serve no purpose. There’s no motivational purpose to getting the survey achievements, or the hireling achievements, or the larceny per zone achievements. There was motivational purpose to individual character HMs and Tris and Challengers. But it’s gone and dead forever for this. Salt poured right into the flesh wound, ZOS. #SaveDungeonEndgame

I agree. I made a post about it somewhere, maybe I’ll look for it later or make another one. I don’t recall it getting a lot of traction except for more casual dungeoneers being against the idea, but the dungeon community needs *something*. Its not the same community as the trial community like people seem to think it is, just has a lot of overlap.

Edit: and I also have this intense wish to scorepush moongrave fane specifically (because of the cubes) so I certainly would love it.

There is an add on called Character Knowledge that makes seeing which alt has what re: motifs, recipes, and furnishing plans, scripts.

For completionists, the addon also lists %completion.

The addon tracks a lot of stuff

When you log in and all the new achievements go to the alt you logged in on and you didn't want them to ALL go to that one alt, especially after deleting all characters during AWA to curate who the achievements go to so you can have your character lore correct. AWA is still biting us with these ill thought out additions years later.

So remind me again why we had to have AwA and why it was a good thing??

I can give you one reason. You do not need anymore to become depressed when you get the monster trophy that eluded you for the last 2 years on the wrong character.

Now you just get depressed when your main achievement character completes 99.9% of an achievement and you accidentally do the final 0.01% of the achievement on your newbie alt who is then credited with the full achievement, meaning you can never complete all achievements on your main.

Oh man, I made the mistake of logging in first on Monday with a bank alt who just happens to have done Cadwell's Gold and Craglorn, getting something like a hundred achievements on a character I don't care about instead of my main. I'm still irritated. Honestly, I'll probably be irritated for a while.

For those of us who bemoan AWA as part of the devolution of CRPGs into arcade games, it was salt in a wound.

Yeah as someone who chased to achievements previously this addition made me not only play less, but play just one character instead of switching up to not accidentally get something on an alt I don't care as much, which is completely the opposite they've tried to achieve giving us possibility to play all of them to contribute. Graven mistake was having account wide achievements AND personal ones at the same time. It works for some, but a lot of people got discouraged from playing alts because their main is the one who's important here and this "earned by" would persist until servers go dark. It's a strange mix of "you're a player and not a character" with "you're actually a character" in an RPG game, where you supposed to play out some distinct character story.

Overall I really dislike what achievement system has become, there were always achievements that didn't felt deserving a word "achievement" but now it's getting into ridiculous bloat that isn't adding any feeling of achievement to it (esp logging in with 30+ new achievements done automatically). Not sure what's the point besides making engagement stats go up.

Yea, a version of this happened to me too. I even had a heads up because of this thread but I was logging in last minute for a raid and forgot. Now a newer alt (my arcanist) which hasn't done any of this stuff got all the achievements instead of my main.

I am so very annoyed. Seriously would rather not have the new achievements at all than have them attached to an alt who realistically had nothing to do with the achievement.
