In ESO lore, Battlemage is more a Position/Rank/Mark-of-Authority. Pretty much any class can become, or aspire to be awarded the title of, a Battlemage.

Well, I mean, he does also inherently want to, he makes the effort to not fall back into his nature.

It's an Elder Scrolls class, just like Nightblade and Sorcerer.
