It was a trend that started with Cryptic and City of Heroes, its been the way to do beta's ever since it seems, its some money saved too.
City of Heroes/Villains was by far my favorite MMO to-date.
If any of you were die-hards for it, check out the Phoenix Project started up since the shutdown. It's called City of Titans-- a completely volunteer group has started construction of the spiritual successor to the CoH, only better. Set to launch holiday 2015.
