What do you guys like to see in a TANK in dungeons?

Besides the base role of a tank, what else do you like to see (in terms of builds) in a tank? What type of build do you most like a tank to have? And which do you think is better for the group overall? For Dungeons! Because I started to like being a tank, and I want to improve, and be even more useful for groups in dungeons.

(The situations are unique, and I know that builds have a mix of these benefits, but I would like to know which one do you think is the main benefit for you from a group perspective! Whether you are a DPS or Healer!)

While group buffs from tanks are nice, it’s not a priority. A good handle on mechanics, a taunt, and a chain is what I want from a tank. Debuffs on the enemy would be what I next look for (particularly major vulnerability, major breach, minor breach) but I don’t find myself looking at it.

I thought this was the basics of Tank, so dedicating sets to extra bonuses for pt is optional? Trivial?

I try to keep as many debuffs as I have active on the target, but there is extra "space" for something else, but I don't know what to put in that "empty space" so I opened a poll to see what else the group would think it was useful, because the basics of the tank, which is to know the mechanics of the bosses, keep mobs, and the boss trapped with taunt I already know and do...

If you know anyone who's a DPS they can let you know how much penetration they're lacking using combat metrics addon. Many buffs and debuffs could be given by a healer but penetration is mostly a tank's job. Tremorscale or crimson oath are good for it, as is infused crusher enchant on backbar ice staff. Same thing with major vulnerability, given through colossus, turning tide, or the monster set from earthen root enclave. Otherwise can use powerful assault, yoln, or pearlescent ward to give some spell/weapon damage. Powerful assault could be worn by a healer though and yoln could be taken care of by an arcanist with the buff circle, so that's where it gets dicey. Personally I use tremorscale/turning tide/yoln most of the time, but if you're using a necro turning tide is kinda useless (due to colo). Bar-space wise, if you've used up all your buffs and debuffs can get yourself more tankiness or ultimate generation.

i want you to make sure you stay alive and tank the boss' damage. you staying alive is more important than giving buffs to your group. it's good to give buffs, but it shouldn't be more of a priority.

if you need a heal set like winter's respite or something that gives you more armor please use it.

The most important ability for a tank is proper positioning of the boss as well as keeping him in place (as long as dungeon mechanics don't force you otherwise), so we dds don't lose time/resources by running after our enemy while reapplying our ground-based DoTs. So a taunt and some situational awareness is needed for sure.

After you feel comfortable with the fights, it's nice to have debuffs on bosses (especially for penetration), but I don't think it's a "must have" for most dungeon runs. But definitely focus on improving damage (either by debuffing/buffing or simply by doing some decent dmg for yourself) instead of protecting/healing your group. There is a healer for this job and a lot of dds manage incoming dmg well for themselves anyways.

Overland difficulty scaling is desperately needed. 9 years. 6 paid expansions. 24 DLCs. 40 game changing updates including One Tamriel, an overhaul of the game including a permanent CP160 gear cap and ridiculous power creep thereafter. I'm sick and tired of hearing about Cadwell Silver & Gold as a "you think you do but you don't" - tier deflection to any criticism regarding the lack of overland difficulty in the game. I'm bored of dungeons, I'm bored of trials; make a personal difficulty slider for overland. It's not that hard.

Outside agro and staying alive. “Grouping together the adds and positioning the boss” is what makes an average dungeon tank a great tank, in my opinion. Buffs and debuffs are awesome, but positioning and grouping are what make a great tank. Just my two cents.

    Stay safe :)

For dungeons? Taunt the big things, turn the big things away from the group, stack the things, apply major breach to things that needs to die fast. Beyond that, additional debuffs like crimson oath's, and major vulnerability. Group buffs are nice, but in my opinion, because the group is small, the overall bonus is not as impactful.

You left out the most important thing a tank brings to the group besides survivability: armor penetration. Most DPS builds now are running around with less 4-5K penetration, leaving the tank to make up the remaining 14000ish in penetration to maximize group DPS. The Sword/Board pokey pokey will get you half way there with major/minor fracture and breach, and from there, they need a good setup to get the remaining approximately 5-7k pen.

For dungeons, it depends on what they like to build and run. Some will go for buffs, others (like myself) build for group ulti generation. The biggest things for me though is that they're able to understand mechanics/learn mechanics if they don't them, hold taunt of big bads, and not kite when not actually physically needed. It also helps if they can pull most ads in during fights.
I also expect the basics from trial tanks, and their setups I usually leave up to them. Most trial tanks will have the usual things like Sax, Yolnahkriin, Pearlescent, etc., and they usually coordinate with each other so there aren't redundant sets. They usually will go war horn, or something like Barrier with Sax.

Yeah I don't care about all that other stuff. It doesn't do any good if a tank can't do the basics and a lot can't.

    Protection for the group?
In a random dungeon the only thing a tank needs to do is keep the boss from going after the rest of the group/taunt the boss. Helping to gather mobs is great but in a random dungeon group there tends to be players who run ahead and start on the group which hinders the tanks efforts which is not the tanks problem.

So the ability to taunt and control the boss is really all that should be expected. Anyone who is in the tank role that cannot taunt should be vote kicked. WS/SD or anything else is great if they provide it but far more than what anyone should expect.

In an organized group, this all becomes a different story as they can choose how much or how little the tank will do.

    Ultimate generation for group?
My default dungeon tank build for a long time has been turning tide, drake's rush and magma incarnate. This setup provides major breach (pierce armor), major vulnerability, major heroism, minor courage. I tank dungeon trifectas and this is what I use for all trash fights. In boss fights I often switch to saxhleel, master architect and magma incarnate to get the most out of warhorns.

    For real tanks:

    taunt >=survivability >= debuffs(breach etc) >= cc >= group buffs.

Knowledge of mechanics can be taught so not mentioning that as prerequisite so as not to discourage those learning. I'd hope if any tank was new to the dungeon or role they'd say so (kind of natural conversation in pre-mades); especially important if pugging (caveat: leave immediately if your inexperience becomes more than casual, witty banter made in good humour; you can always get another group that appreciates your time and effort).

edit: apparently 'prerequisite' shouldn't have 15 's' letters in it

In a dungeon I only want 2 things: for the tank to stay alive while holding aggro, and for them to contribute to damage. Whether they contribute to damage through grouping and dotting/debuffing adds, group buffs, or by "fake tanking" on a DPS build, so long as they can taunt and survive it doesn't matter to me how they play.
