give them useful amount of gold
It depends. If it sounds like a new player (as in, they're asking for low level daily writ mats, or "can anyone tell me where to get the jewel crafting skill" - that sort of thing), I will answer the questions at length, and I will give them not only stacks of the mats (yes, all of them they'll need for quite a while - because I have gazilliions of them all, and every one of my characters harvests whenever they're out questing) but also 100k gold because I have millions and won't miss it.

This actually happens a couple times a month. Works for me - someone helped me out in the beginning. I pay it forward.

Not always because I’m busy but I can’t see if they’ve gotten mailed already and beggars beg all day, they do not stop. In some cases I will offer to send things to new players though.

Even way back in the EQ days I'm not giving money. I'll tell you how to get it in case you really are new, but a brand new player wouldn't know what to do with a ton of gold and needs to learn the ins and outs of the game, and an experienced player is just begging instead of playing.

Now if a guildy needs a few mats for their daily it's not a big deal once or twice but I've seen the same people in zone chat begging for just a "few" mats to finish their dailies, all day for days on end, moving from zone to zone.

For years when i was on xbox guys would go from area to area collecting gold from people, it was viewed as a known scam so i just give advice. If its supplies they need for writs i just send all they need and volunteer to max their lines because its all gonna get them places.

It depends on how they're asking. If its someone taking up money for the poor orphans in Betnikh its a hard NO. If its a newer player or a vet fallen on hard times, I'll give them advice on what to farm, how to make some gold, what trading guilds I would recommend.

If its a New player about to spend real money buying an attribute respec scroll or something because they don't have a 1000 gold to their name and can't afford the shrine I will gladly give them gold and skyshards.

Why would I respond to anyone in zone chat asking for a handout? It seems like a waste of time.

Then again I find zone chat a waste of time for the most part and have it turned off.

Give advice on how to make gold. I helped a lot of new players get filthy rich during jester festival.

Unless it's trival amounts of gold. Like some people over the years needed 500 gold to stop guards from hunting them . You got to feel outy for when guards do a shake up on new players.

Also helping with a people missing provisioning. It used to be hard for people to find flour or pumpkin during event seasons. Lastly those people running on hard times who need a few coins more for a respec.

Twice I bought a house for someone. One really liked Argonians so I approved of them . Then another was a new tank trying to find their own way in eso .

Usually I don't give gold. A while ago there was a busker standing near the tavern in solitude playing guitar. He didn't ask for money, but I sent him some gold and the message that's important to support young talents. ;) .If I remember correctly, he sent me a jute bag from fishing as a thank you. I thought it was cute.

As other people said it depends on what they're asking for. If they're just spamming chat asking for gold and especially if they're asking for large amounts I'll ignore them. If they sound like a new player (e.g. asking how to get enough for one of the initial bank or inventory upgrades) I might send them some and will give them advice on how to get gold.

I recommend asking if they have ESO+ before sending too many materials. Someone did that to me when I'd just started (this was before the crafting bag even existed) and while I really appreciated the sentiment my biggest problem at that point was inventory management and it made it even worse. I had to gradually transfer them over to the mule I'd created to hold CE Treasure Maps and most of them ended up sitting there for months because it took me a long time to level up crafting and by then I forgot they were there.

I didn't want to say anything at the time because I didn't want to seem rude when they were being very generous, but I wish they'd been a bit less...enthusiastic.

One of the first things I do when I create a new character, is create a "Silence" tab and uncheck everything. I then create a separate Group, Guild and Zone tabs. This way I can play the game in peace and quiet. ;)

      Yeah, sure, pal.

Even in the beta tests some people were asking others to send them gold to buy a horse. It was a freaking beta test, everyone's accounts were reset in between each one so even if they'd been playing for a while no one had that much gold to give away. But there were still people insisting someone must be able to afford to give it to them.

If really focused on what I do ingame, I miss some of the stuff that goes on in zone chat.

If someone asks for hlep there, it depends how and for what they ask. If someone asks for a hint how to get certain stuff (like ingredients for provisioning dailies), I am inclined to give them hints on where to look plus that handful of apples (or whatever is is they need). If outright just bluntly askong for thousands of gold, I am inclined to ignore them.
That one guy that whispered me begging for free crowns, I reported for their audacity.
