Zone chat has become really antagonistic

It's nothing more than life. In real life you have your rude, crude, and socially unacceptable, but then again you have your optimists as well. You just learn to deal with it. I hate to say it but I agree that this is more common-place then some here would like to admit. I only ignore the spammers and the ones who use racial slurs like the "N" word I witnessed 2 times today. "Kids" (adult and pubescent) both know that you can't do anything more than report them. There are no physical consequences other than a ban at most.(If you travel 2000 miles to go punch a troll you're just as sad as they are!) So they say what they want in chat since there is little to no supervision of what is being typed by others in their own homes. It's just a sad fact of life. However, like also mentioned there are those that reddem general chat and make it okay to use from time to time.

This was an issue in beta as well, and I wish it wasn't, because the weird aggressively antagonistic nature of people in zone chat is pretty much the major downside to this game, as far as I'm concerned. Anytime someone expresses an opinion, the first thing that happens is half of zone chat attacks that person and calls them stupid or whatever. I had refused to pretty much talk in zone chat at all for all of yesterday anticipating this, and then today, after someone had said they hoped there was not a cap on the ignore list (because gold sellers) I said "An ignore list cap would be the dumbest thing." Which I don't think anybody disagrees with. Who wants an ignore cap? And lo and behold someone immediately called me a troll and ignored me. We really need to make an effort as a community to be welcoming in public chats and try to help people, because I really believe that right now it's going to drive people away. Anyway. Just my thoughts. I, for one, am going to try to be as helpful and welcoming as possible in public chat, but I will also probably refrain from expressing any opinions at all, because that kind of thing happens.

    tl;dr: Be nice.

    Agreed

I keep wondering if I'm playing the same game as everyone else. I keep reading about bugs on quests that have worked fine for me and about an army in trolls in zone chat where I have only seen light hearted discussions and people asking for help on issues. Are people blowing some things out of proportion or are these trolls and bug gremlins only out and about when I'm unable to be online?

Outside of Cyrodil, I haven't actually found Zone chat to be all that bad on AD, though I'm also slightly ahead of the leveling curve, which may play into that a bit.

In Cyrodil? Use ignore. Use it a lot.

Presumably, once we're all in the same end-zone(s), zone chat will be horrendous, what with everyone (I think) being on one chat server...which means you will never have seen this number of trolls at one time before... :pensive:

I think there suggest be an ignore cap but u can always remove zone chat from your chat box if you don't like it our make a different tab.

also a Recruiting channel and Trade channel would be awesome

a Recruiter myself I kinda feel bad posting my recruit messages in zone chat but its the only chat we got to reach the people who are actually looking for guilds

I guess the ignore cap thing wasn't really the point. Though, I do respectfully disagree with you. I don't see any value in putting a cap on how many gold farmers I can ignore.

My point was that I was demonized by this person for simply expressing an opinion that I do not think was unfounded or malicious in any way. And it's a general trend that I have noticed. Like it's just a very hostile environment for people right now in zone chat. Anytime you express any opinion, there is an army chomping at the bit to jump on you and attack you. I have, of course, put zone chat in its own tab, but I think a better solution is just to be nice and hope that we can shift the tables and make the tolerant, helpful people the vocal majority. To this end, when I am not busy, I have tabbed over to my zone chat tab and endeavored to help people when I can.

A lot of people have said that they have not found any meanness in zone chat and have had only good experiences, which makes me really happy, because I really hope I'm just having a bad experience or am just on at bad times. Maybe it will get better.

Keep one feature in mind (and it's probably been mentioned), but ignore is account wide. If you see someone being a general *** or spouting things that most of society would deem inappropriate, you can ignore them. You won't see them on any character.

But, yes, this has become the state of things in our current age with being able to be anonymous on the internet without repercussion. A lot of folks will say it's because people are coming from that game, but I disagree. I think it's that the internet gives a voice to those who most people would typically not want to hear because of the hatred and nonsense that they spew.

Hell, I am as crazy, weird, and whacked out as they come, and I don't want to hear half of it.

Your best weapon at the moment is an account-wide /ignore.

Sadly it isn't an ESO problem but more mmo community thing. It's in most games. There are just those people who love to troll, complain, and stir the pot. I've seen a lot of good hearted people already which is promising. I don't like turning off chat because i feel like I shut out a big portion of online gaming. I just try and tune out the spam and haters while I do my own thing.

The false sense of anonymity online seems to bring out the worst kind of behavior in so many people. Some of the comments I've seen in zone have been atrocious. Turning off zone has made my game time much more enjoyable.

Zone/area/general chat is always bad in games. Racism, sexism, every other *ism except the good ones. I generally ignore it. Nobody ever responds when I try to strike up friendly conversation anyway.

You COULD use something like LibAntiSpam addon to filter out posts containing keywords that obvious trolls would use. Like "Norris" -- no good ever comes from a sentence containing a word like that.

Well it isn't that false really, unless you have access to ESO's account database at any rate :P

For me (Daggerfall) it seems to vary depending on time of day, and I can't pinpoint it to a specific time either (i.e. kids coming home from school, adults from work, whatever). Trolls aren't around 24/7 though.

While it is sad that 90% of zone chat are filled with children and adults who act like children, there are good people here and there willing to help out, answer a question truthfully, lead someone down the right path.

Its a needle in the haystack.

There is already a cap on ignore. Its either 100 or 150. I know cause I reached it first week in game. Then went and spent 15 minutes un-ignoring everyone..and now I save it for those that truly deserve it.

My main complain about zone chat it that it breaks up guild chat.
Too much WTS, WTB and so on but also some useful stuff like dolmens is up.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

Hoping down the road, they have a chat for buying/selling. Hopefully cut down on that. Hopefully, haha...

I agree this is an MMO issue. I recall back in the days one MMO that did not suffer those problems. Ultima Online the early days.
But that's a different system without zone chats. Only ranged based chat that lets you talk to players who would be able to hear you realisticly. Now combine that with the ability to actually kill other players, you find that people dont generally go around and act like jerks because it tend to get them killed. And those who were good at killing had no need to go around and act like jerks.
But yeah. Different game, Different System and a different time.

    People still read zone chat??

Seriously though, it is really bad when you need to ask a legitimate question and it totally goes unanswered because people are "debating" politics or religion or why people that don't PvP are wussies.

I personally try not to spend much time reading it because it makes me feel kind of ill. It's like these people are totally beaten down by life and need to spew venom to make everyone else feel as bad as they do every day.

I don't think there is anything to do about it because it is in every MMO lately, or so it seems to me. I think all we can do is to not engage in any dialog with them.

Have a guild standard of no trolling would be a good start.....which of course may open a completely different debate :(

The few I found with a *** attitude got put on ignore with the goldspammers, and there haven't been that many of them. Maybe its because I don't hang around Stonefalls or The Rift enough to hear it all

Last game I played you had to pay (items or gold) to talk in Zone (World) which kept a lot of crap to a minimum.
Also in game moderators, if online, could "silence" you for however long they wanted if you played up.

You're going to get agitated people. There are those who are frustrated with the game and those who are frustrated at those who are frustrated with the game.

And then you got people who are annoyed at seeing the game questions repeated over and over by others who didn't bother to use their noggin.

Then you go in PvP and you got people who can't agree on a strategy or people who are just obsessing over their team's performance... not to mention those who are frustrated with balance.

With that said, in most cases, people argue because they love the game.

I honestly don't even know why they bother anymore. The filters have gotten complex enough that in order to get around them they're practically typing in complete gibberish. I couldn't make out what they're advertising if I wanted to now.

Well, the absolute very first thing I ever do when creating a new character is set up my "quiet" channel. Remove 'zone' chat. 90% of my game I play without the zone chat playing. I only move back to it should I call out for assistance with a world boss area.

Zone chat has always been filled with immature players and trolls in pretty much every game I have ever played. The key is to just simply not listen to it.
