Surveys need an update

To me it seems that having loads and loads of surveys is a player made issue. As in, if I didn't do loads of crafting quests and just let the surveys stack in inventory then it's a problem I created for myself.
Look at it this way. Surveys as a whole are already the laziest way to farm mats without paying someone else to do the farming for you. You can in a matter of minutes collect more raw materials than you can in the open world. I challenge you to try it. Test me on it.
Also, as far as trashing surveys? No one I know trashes any surveys other than a few that trash enchanting surveys at most what they do is let them stack.
Crafting writs are already the fastest way to make gold in this game, the time spent to go do surveys is a balancing method.
As far as "solutions" go. I will suggest the same thing I have on other such threads about this topic. Simply this. Make surveys tradeable and thus sellable. That way those that farm can get a boon and those that hate surveys can get gold.
It's a reasonable solution that doesn't impact the time investment needed to complete them.
In a way, I am already turning many of my surveys into gold, as I sell a LOT of ingredients ..... I almost always get a good amount of heartwood doing them, and we all know how fast that can sell.......
They are annoying, I do agree with that, and it would be AWESOME if we could just sell them directly in guild stores.... I think that would be the best solution. That way, the people that DON'T want to do them can still get some reward for them, other than just the feeling of clicking a delete button..... while the others that do them can also get satisfaction.......
And it would end the back and forth, as well.

The node interaction issue has been reported to ZOS its just a matter of fixing the bug. And no its not limited to survey nodes.
One of the very likely reasons you have to travel out of frame to reset the nodes is probably to avoid exploits/duplicating/bugs/ and the like. It might not be possible to make it faster.
As for character use. Well ZOS has been making changes that have made the appeal of having more than one character more redundant than ever. Between armory system, item set collecting, and account wide achievements I find that many of my characters just don't get played or have a purpose other than writs or storage.
Even with just the base 8 character slots its not that hard to dedicate a character to holding just surveys if you need to.
Maybe, as someone suggested they come out with a unique storage place for them that's account wide. I could see that having appeal.
I still maintain though that players should be required to go to the locations and interact to redeem them.0 -

The work-arounds of re-loading and re-zoning are a burden for server capacities and have for sure nothing to do with intended roaming through the wilderness.
To keep up roaming through the wilderness as base principle, ZOS could give normal nodes a chance to become a super node, delivering the normal harvest (incl Heartwood etc) and on top the harvest of one survey.
If you give 10% chance per stacked survey, having more than 10 surveys (of that type node) gives you 10x10%=100% chance on a super node.
With less than 10 surveys the chances go down and you can choose between running around normal nodes, go to the survey digging location or stop harvesting and accumulate again with writs a bigger stack than 10 surveys.
And still in my opinion nothing really wrong with ZOS offering hirelings in the Crown Store at a cost of say 1500 Crowns who can harvest any kind of survey, but at a max of 5 surveys per day and mailing you every day the harvests
From financial pay-back considerations these hirelings are totally unprofitable, but hey... who cares about the payback of a mount.

I estimate 7 seconds away then the same amount back to reset, works for me anyway. Letting them pile up just doesnt work for me ive gotta nip it in the bud for my own sanity 😆0 -

Yeah they can take up quite a bit of space that increases as each DLC drops but there is no issue having them all stacked on a mule alt or like I do, in my storage chests in a house.
I wait for either when I need the mats, am bored or when i have a massive stack of them.
I have one location with 20 surveys, just go there, grab the nodes, run away for 2 secs for respawn, rinse repeat.,
Not only does this just constantly feed the writs, you never actually need to farm again and in a pinch you can sell mats for gold.
What I do is when I get them I dump them in the bank, when bank is getting full I grab them out and put them in teh storage in the house.0 -

Yeah, I don't blame you. When I'm out collecting, I even see people run much, much farther than they have to. I often collect "double" the surveys of others who are resetting because they either run so far away, or do the "port to house" trick, which takes significantly longer for all but like 2 surveys, where it's still longer... but not by as much.
I even took the time and effort to share the most effective reset distance for every survey I've found (still working on a few from High Isle) in my spreadsheet (in signature) that tracks pretty much all things writs and refining related.

✭✭✭✭✭A few years ago someone suggested a combining solution, but it was never done. Ir's an old problem, and I believe that at this moment most players just delete the surveys. It seemed nice at the beginning but now, the way it works, it's just trash in the bag. It's cool if you have just one survey, but with more than one it's a pain to collect it. In some regions, like in Wrothgar, we even need to go ultra far for it to reset, and for some weird reason in the new regions (like in High Isle) they decided to space out more the nodes. All and all, there's no fun in collecting surveys, it's just a waste of time and it doesn't feel like a reward at all. If the idea is to encourage us to delete it, then it's very successfully, but if it's meant for us to use it, then It would be nice to have a better way to handle multiple surveys without making us run back and forth for ages in the same place.
I really don't believe that is true. I believe a lot of players stock pile them, and I am sure some people do delete them, but I cant believe its a majority. They are annoying, but they make for the most efficient farming possible when you have a bunch. If I need cloth, I just grab one of my stacks of 30+ surveys of the same node, and do them till I have what I need. One Alt/Mule can hold them all.

Try that in one of the Wrothgar ones, not "7 seconds". Also, the exact time is not the point, it is the annoyance AND uncertainty of exactly how far to go (and to remember exactly where to go back, especially on consoles).
It is a needless pain.

The uncertainty of the distance is the worst part. But even if you figure it out it is a needless and unproductive delay. No point to it. Yeah, I don't blame you. When I'm out collecting, I even see people run much, much farther than they have to. I often collect "double" the surveys of others who are resetting because they either run so far away, or do the "port to house" trick, which takes significantly longer for all but like 2 surveys, where it's still longer... but not by as much.
I even took the time and effort to share the most effective reset distance for every survey I've found (still working on a few from High Isle) in my spreadsheet (in signature) that tracks pretty much all things writs and refining related.

Yeah, which is why I havent done that in years. That doesnt mean I am going to delete them as OP suggests. Thankfully, they stack so just not hard to stick them on an alt or in your bank. They do have significant value. And while collecting multiple is annoying at first, its still very efficient to do 20-30 at the same node, especially once you figure out the reset distance for that spot. Some nodes are certainly more annoying than others. I have enough surveys stockpiled that I always have an easy one I can do a bunch of if I need mats of a particular type. I did about 1500 last summer over a couple long days. Haven't needed any mats since. Still sitting on a few thousand surveys if I need them done the road.

Try that in one of the Wrothgar ones, not "7 seconds". Also, the exact time is not the point, it is the annoyance AND uncertainty of exactly how far to go (and to remember exactly where to go back, especially on consoles).
It is a needless pain.
Multi-crafting added less value in many ways, but was put into the game.
I sympathize with your console situation i was on xbox for 5 years i ended up memorizing the locations just our of repetition. Yeah 7 seconds was too long its just a few really to run there and back, i agree Wrothgar is irritating but I do it all the same I really enjoy the benefits. My bane was woodworking greenshade actually until i got the nearby house which helps alot.😁0 -

✭✭Surveys are fine, for the most part. Some of them are obnoxious to reset, but I just collect those as they come instead of piling them up. Still, being able to reset by using the survey would be an awesome QoL improvement.
The main gripes I have with the system are the multiple locations for Coldharbor, Craglorn and Wrothgar, and the absurd distance between the nodes on the newer zones. At the current rate, the ore nodes for the next blacksmith survey will be on distinct edges of the bloody map...1 -

They didn’t, they expressed their opinion on the matter. If you enjoy surveys as they are, that’s fine and you can post about how much you love them as much as you like but we can also post as much as we want about the opposite side.

They definitely arent all the same radius, so just counting to a number and running is going to be different for each one. My trick has always been to try to break LOS with the survey nodes. That does it more times than not.3 -

The resets are for the most part far less than that 7 seconds. There are only a half dozen or so that are actually annoying distances. There seems to be a lot of over-exaggeration as to the "reset distance" required to run, like it takes running across the map or something
The uncertainty of the distance is the worst part. But even if you figure it out it is a needless and unproductive delay. No point to it. Oh that was just my idea of a rough guess, run over there come back quick basically. I know i just have to be a certain distance away its not an exact science but it works out. 😋
Yeah, I don't blame you. When I'm out collecting, I even see people run much, much farther than they have to. I often collect "double" the surveys of others who are resetting because they either run so far away, or do the "port to house" trick, which takes significantly longer for all but like 2 surveys, where it's still longer... but not by as much.
I even took the time and effort to share the most effective reset distance for every survey I've found (still working on a few from High Isle) in my spreadsheet (in signature) that tracks pretty much all things writs and refining related.
I gave up on even trying to help in-game though when I see people doing it... oh well.
The fact you needed a spreadsheet to track that shows the idiocy of the system. Why should you need a spreadsheet to gather mats?

You only know all those since you run so many. Yeah, I know it doesn't bother you, but I want to play, not figure out exactly how far to run and then return for each and every spot! That is not engaging gameplay.

It was bad enough finding many of the spots on the PS4, without addons. I definitely do not want to go back to something close to that after going through the tedious task of rebuilding on the PC.

And I am completely unclear how a spreadsheet is going to tell me where to go to while playing. I don't use "numbers" actively when playing in a manner that would be helped by a spreadsheet. Pictures perhaps, but that would be the exact problem I am trying to avoid.
It cost me a lot of money and time to rebuild on the PC, I want to reduce the tedium so I can run quests for the 20th time rather than having to distort things to get survey points to respawn. (Yeah, questing is grindy, but at least it is doing what the game is focused on.)

Eiregirl✭✭✭A few years ago someone suggested a combining solution, but it was never done. Ir's an old problem, and I believe that at this moment most players just delete the surveys. It seemed nice at the beginning but now, the way it works, it's just trash in the bag. It's cool if you have just one survey, but with more than one it's a pain to collect it. In some regions, like in Wrothgar, we even need to go ultra far for it to reset, and for some weird reason in the new regions (like in High Isle) they decided to space out more the nodes. All and all, there's no fun in collecting surveys, it's just a waste of time and it doesn't feel like a reward at all. If the idea is to encourage us to delete it, then it's very successfully, but if it's meant for us to use it, then It would be nice to have a better way to handle multiple surveys without making us run back and forth for ages in the same place.
If I understand you correctly you are talking about multiple surveys at the same location such as 5 woodworking surveys in Glenumbra at the same place. I would be fine for an option to combine a bunch of surveys for the same survey node into a super node.
But in all honesty the way things are has never bothered me. I do different things from running a distance away and sometimes find a treasure chest to zoning out and gathering a survey in another zone then going back but the one thing I don't do is let it frustrate me or take time away from things that are more important to me in the game or my real life. This is a game and in the grand scheme of things it means nothing, and I will not let it become a point of stress.
If you are talking about just combining the same type of survey for different locations, I would probably be ok with that as long as it was optional because I like gathering materials as I travel between surveys.2 -

If the nodes of the survey are close together, make your character do a quick spin before picking up the next one. Make it look like they are showing off their latest outfit. I find it prevents the -e- lag and saves time.0 -

✭✭Surveys are not a problem, you either want to harvest them or you don't, your choice. nobody forces you to do daily writs or harvest the surveys they drop.
Back when I had ESO+ I used to do daily writs religiously on 8 characters every day and harvest the surveys every couple of weeks, in one session. It was my choice, so I never thought of it as a chore. I never ran out of money or resources to sell in a trading guild or to friends.
When I dropped ESO+ (for financial reasons), inventory management was too painful, so I stopped doing them. My choice. Maybe I should have asked for unlimited inventory slots instead of just accepting things. Now I come back and do them when ESO+ free trial is on and stop when it ends.Australian on PS4 NA server.
