Templar animation looks like a fishing gaffe rather than a spear of aedric origins

    Yep. Of all the styles they could have gone with, they picked one of the worst possible for Templar. Should have gone with Imperial Champion staff if they absolutely positively had to change the model. It at least looks more like a spear, and isn't spiky and vampiric. If they sized it down instead of up, it wouldn't be half bad as an Aedric staff.

    I played it on an alliance wb with 1.5 mil hp and pulling several mobs in public dungeons. Seems to work well enough as before. No issues on the supposed nerf.

    Oh no! It's not like we've been saying this for more than 4 weeks over in the PTS forum, begging ZoS to not change the animation of jabs because the new one is terrible! SMH.

    Had a thread about this, too. Got some decent attention by the community and there were many others. ZoS didn't hear it, probably because they already spent time on it and were adamant on going through with it regardless of player feedback. Which is a shame. Templar is now dead to me.

    If I was a new player reading skill lines. I would think "WOW I get to summon DIVINE SPEARS?!"

    Get in game and see it...and slot dark flare and never look back. The goal was to stop players from only using spears, and between the nerfs and the animation? I think they did well. I can't imagine anyone actually enjoying it.

    Also is it just me or does it still sound like it hits four times? Same with flurry, sounds are way off

    For me it looks like a magical spear, so not a big problem, just the damage is messed up a bit and for now hard to get used to this change.

    Yeah, the sounds don't sync up right with the animation on either of them, which just adds to their floatiness and lack of satisfying impact.

    The animation is so incredibly janky.. Of all the changes, this one irritates me the most because it just ruins how my character looks in combat. This is just awful.

    I liked the old animation better.

    Now it is a huuuge single two handed spear wit a looong handle which has no use (the handle is not used in the animation, it just is too long), and somewhat pink colored. And not very bright? Is a shame for a Templar.

    Having said that, I am sure ZOS do their best. So trying to not be too nitpicky generally speaking, but ZOS should receive the right feedback.

    For me the worst thing about this new animation is that it doesn't reflect the size of rectangular area in which damage is dealt. Jabs/Sweeps is a fairly wide skill, while the animation looks like a narrow single-target attack. After years of playing Templar I instinctively know the real width, but it's a huge learning obstacle for new Templar players and non-Templars who PvP against Templars.

    I don't know what a fishing gaffe is but if its bad then I agree lol. The signature Templar skill now looks and feels really bad and does laughable damage. It is also very annoying how it doesn't match the rest of Aedric Spear line, some consistency would be nice ZOS. Cause at the moment it sticks out like a sore thumb and feels like a husk of what it used to me.

    when i hit the mob pulls in malabal tor public dungeon it seemsed to hit more than one for sure.

    It looks awful... definitely not an Aedric spear. Looks more like a mop handle they attached a point to. Of course they won't revert it because they don't want their animation dev to feel bad.

    I didn't think it looked like a fishing gaff, but it's really bad. It looks like a staff that is already in game.

    Has anyone seen anything anywhere that explains why they so desperately needed to change the animation in the first place?

    Since a lot of the changes this update have to do with damage and weaving, it makes perfect sense that these two skills (jabs & flurry) were hit this way. They were changed to make weaving easier apparently.

    The vid below shows and tests both skills and this guy seems to think that both new animations not only look better but also feel better for weaving.

    Not my opinion as I am not an end gamer into running hardcore combat or even bothering with weaving but it makes sense to me.

    However I am not sure I like the new quicker jabs. I use jabs for the fact it's the closest thing to an auto attack that I can find in this game, flurry too I guess. I don't like the new flurry for my Nightblade tho as he obviously uses daggers. Maybe if/when I try it on another char with maces or axes I might like it, but again that would only be for the visual, not the quicker attack.

    So it's clear a large portion of the playerbase hates this change.

    Have we established exactly why this change was made? What does ZOS get out of this? Have they communicated about this at all?
    No one is saying there aren't multiple interpretations of the lore, and we're not arguing that ESO did it "wrong".

    We're arguing that they decided to go for the most boring, mundane, seen-before interpretation possible. Like they almost always do, unless they can ride on the coat-tails of past games.

    It’s a horrible animation. It looks bad, it feels bad. It uses a vampiric motif (do we still have a lore master???), it’s far too big, it feels…floaty, and not impactful at all. It felt like I was shooing a spider with a broom, not puncturing enemies with holy spears of divine light.

    Please revert.

    I was running with Isobel last night and she kept the old jab animation which was just salt in the wound seeing the horrid new jabs my toon was using. Sigh

    Have to say I’m not a fan of the spear model for jabs. I’m all for the animations being easier to weave but the spear head is almost the size of an axe/hammer! Would prefer they scale it down.

    The old jabs was our identity. We have been using it for over 8 years. There was also absolutely no reason to change both the look and the sound of jabs. They could have just changed the animation and left everything else alone. When using the original animation my jabs focused on a concentrated spot straight in front of me. The new animation just swings wildly all over the place and I don't feel like I can truly aim at anything. This is a sad day for Templars. :'(
